Horizon Forbidden West - Digital Foundry Tech Review - A PS5 Graphics Masterclass

Hobbygaming

has been asked to post in 'Grounded' mode.
While Naughty Dog is the absolute master, it has come to a point that all PlayStation Studios are capable of setting new benchmarks. We have already seen it in such a short span of time.
  • Bluepoint set a new graphical benchmark with Demon's Souls.
  • Returnal, a relatively smaller game from a small and inexperienced HouseMarque team, did so much right with its particle effects and upscaling tech that Digital Foundry put it in their top 3, above Forza Horizon 5, GoTG, Metro Exodus, etc.
  • Then Insomniac released Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and set new visual benchmark.
  • Guerrilla is now following Rift Apart with Horizon: Forbidden West, and in my opinion, has already surpassed it.
  • After HFW, God of War and GT7 are coming.
  • Sucker Punch will likely set a new benchmark with a PS5 exclusive Ghost of Tsushima 2.
  • SSM's second IP, a PS5 exclusive, will likely set a new benchmark as well.
  • Then Naughty Dog drops a game, and we will require the collective effort of the human civilization to pick up our jaws again.
It just keeps getting better for PlayStation Studios, and everyone is setting new benchmarks with each game they release.
I agree with all of this and it helps that Sony has the best support teams in the industry: ICE, VASG, X-Dev

Even Mark Cerny works on games, he helped Insomniac Games with the lighting and weather for Spider-man PS4 amongst other games

This one is gameplay btw. Credit to imapioneer from the other side.

Score one for rim lighting. This level of detail and character lighting during gameplay is a step up not only from the first game but other games as well.

This is probably The Best or Very fucking Close to being the best character model I have ever seen in a game that has/about to be shipped to play.
The contours, the stretched skin, the fine hairs on her cheek and let's not forget the lips. I am Impressed, with a capital I.

I’ve really enjoyed playing things at 60fps last year or so but I am absolutely fine playing a game in 30, eyes will adjust easily after 5 mins even though the initial switch is jarring you stick with it and it’s worth the adjustment for bells and whistles. If anyone wants to do some pre adjustment I recommend U4 remaster it has a 4k30 mode.

We’ll play this 4k60 with the PS5 pro or in 40fps if they do the insomniac thing.

The reflection on his eyeball is just mind blowing...

This is what I'm saying, though. You here, and others like you elsewhere, have said this, but the upshot is the best looking console game to date is cross gen. So what do we say to that?

Could it be way better if it is a PS5 exclusive? Presumably. Neither you nor i know what GG has done under the hood here. But it's still the best looking title, despite this lack of core features you list, so what else can we ask for at this point in a generation?

I dunno, some pc games have physics sliders, i don't see why this isn't applicable in some sense here. PS5 isn't a PC, a month after getting a PS5 i got a computer that was an upgrade on it without breaking the bank, why is it a zero sum game?

I posit that it isn't the responsibility of PS5 games to look like PC games, their responsibility rather is to just look like a generational advancement, and surely nobody could say this PS5 release doesn't look better than any game from last gen, diminishing returns and all..
Reflections on eyeballs was a thing in the first game aswell.

You forget bend, i put them over sucker punch when it comes to graphic.

Days gone wasy easily the most impressive ue4 game of past gen.

The thing with @VFXVeteran is that he definitely knows his shit - the man is a pro ffs.

But the combination of very specific fetishes (“on pc you can activate SSSONAOMB and that’s so much better!”) and the fact most people (including me) have way, way different way to look at graphics, means whenever there’s a new console “graphics showcase” the amusement is guaranteed.
The issue is that whenever VFX and literally anyone else on this board get into a "graphics generation" discussion it starts from very different viewpoints.
To me it seems like @VFXVeteran is looking at it strictly from a tech perspective, and in that regard he is absolutely right (most of the time at least). A game like Horizon FW has barely/nothing "new" if you look at all the technical aspects in a disjointed way, and when coming from professional CGI there is also certainly nothing impressive about anything and probably never will be.
The other side looks at the surface picture, which may only be the result of more of the old stuff if you look under the hood, but it`s still "more stuff" than previously possible which is enough to warrant the "generational difference" badge.

imho the usual suspects here just talk past each other due to the vast in-depth knowledge difference and resulting viewpoints.

Think about it this way 33ms is twice as much time to render as 16ms. This difference will always exist to the end of time, you will always need to make sacrifices to do something with half the time 30fps affords you.
It is more than that as you do things per frame that do not scale: think about input processing for example. There are fixed costs that stay the same when you have a 16ms budget as well as when you have a 33ms one.

Biology basics.

1) The world story exposes the characters to a life in nature. They have no heated flat and no electricity and they don't live on their sofa. The body evolves defence mechanisms, hair on the entire (!) body is quite normal. These can be pronounced differently depending on external influences and genetic disposition.
2) Hormones. You know, the thing that always drives you to Pornhub after your NeoGAF visit. That's where the outside influences also kick in. Basically, Aloy has to do a lot in terms of physical exercise, which means she will produce a lot more androgens (probably even more than you). These stimulate hair growth, also in the face.

If you ever have the pleasure of getting close to a woman, take a good look at her body. Not just where your primate part of you brain takes you. You'll be surprised, I promise.

Don't they share a lot of their technologies with each other, so unlike independent studios these guys can utilize new tech that each studio comes up with plus the improvements that come with Sony's own engineering teams

There's the ICE ("Initative for a Common Engine") team, but to what extent various engines are able to benefit from each other is unclear. On a conceptual level for sure (but GDC talks do that too), but as to actually reusing code for example, I'm not so sure. We're talking about engines made for vastly different purposes. Can Polyphony Digital benefit from rope physics in the ND engine?

Just look at the pedigree of studios and games in those points you mentioned. It's staggering to see what quality Sony has available at their fingertips.

Amazing! Thanks for posting mate.

Loving the hype from everyone, so much so I now wish I had someone to enjoy this with on Friday.

Feels like when Black Flag released on PC and we got those awesome fancy features including the weather system, ie bush flappies just like this.

They weren't to this fidelity tho ofc but its giving me the same excited feelings about seeing a new benchmark for visuals in games.

Anyone in Scotland want to come round to mine on Friday for a gaming sesh? Its BYOB/BYOD and I have a 250-pound bouncer so don't even think about trying any funny business.

I respect your opinion bro but I still think and believe that crossgen holds games back

I understand scalability and it's easier to scale resolution and frames no doubt

But there's a paradigm shift coming where the SSD is needed to transfer data as quickly as possible. I've seen it explained as being like a "bandwidth multiplier" in a sense

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart used this method for its visuals but devs will continue to get even better results
Cross gen indeed holds back what the game should be.

While the result on PS5 is stunning you can see things cleary planned with PS4 in mind.

I can only dream what it could be if PS5 only.

Question: will you be moving around and moving the camera in this game or will you be standing still all the time?
How do you play a game in standing still?

You know you play games in 30fps exactly like you play games in 60fps.

There is no difference how you play them.

I don’t see enough talk about face rendering. The detail and fidelity blows my mind for an open-world game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like this.
People is not surprised becuse horizon 1 had super detailed models even for less than tertiary characters

Character rendering is not gonna be surpassed very easily by future open world games.
