FF5 and FF6 are honestly a lot more fun combat and gameplay wise, the enemies felt less frusturating, special moves didn't take as long to complete, and there was more of an emphasis on fun gameplay from what i've seen. I think FF7 has a great story from what i've played but the battle system and gameplay feel way too slow in comparison to the SNES games. Plus FF5 has the job system which is awesome
I get JRPGs are all about story but at the same time if there isn't a compelling and fun gameplay element to keep me going i can't say i wanna continue, and FF7's combat feels much slower and just more boring than the previous games

also FF7's CGI backgrounds are beautiful but i'd be lying if i didn't find them hard to navigate at times.... FF5 and 6 honestly never had this problem for me
doesn't help that the character models being as blocky as they are makes the contrast between the backgrounds and characters very jarring (though this can be fixed with mods to make the overworld character models more reminiscent of their battle versions)

That's not a hot take at all, that's just the truth.
That's not a hot take, that's just straight up wrong.

FF6 and FF7 are just steampunk and cyberpunk spinoffs of FFV
i think FF6's steampunk aesthetic does a lot better of a job of showing how bad it is to harm the planet than FF7. Having this giant futuristic looking cyberpunk dystopia isn't as striking as having a massive steampunk aesthetic with CO2 being pumped into the air daily- that's far more effective tbh

Never had this problem at all. It's very clear where you can and cannot go. It also helps that all of FF7's backgrounds are unique and gorgeous, especially if you play the game on PC with an AI enhanced mod that brings them up to higher resolution.

A stark contrast with FFVI and V's copy pasted environments that are reused over and over again.

That's your opinion, probably not worthy of a thread. However, hopefully we get an FFV remake on Switch, followed by FFVI on Nintendo's next platform.

Not much of a hot take. A lot of people will agree with you on 6 being better. I wouldn't. But many would.

(Also, my secret shame: I have never played FFVI)

I'm gonna have to disagree.
In no way am I'm saying ff6 is even remotely bad but i feel ff7 was objectively better in every conceivable way.
Ff5 imo was too boring.
Good but really MEH at the same time.

I don’t think there’s anything controversial about this, in fact I think if you did a pole with only people over the age of 40 allowed to vote on all the FF games, that it would heavily skew towards 6.

Did you play these games in the 90’s? Cause at the time, you could easily differentiate Final Fantasy VII for its graphics and quality of life improvements. When Anthology and Chronicles came out, they were completely different due to the 2D world and the battle system felt a lot more static. Your characters still had slow ATB bars and there wasn’t a huge focus on Limit Breaks. It’s odd hearing this now because of how much of a technical marvel Final Fantasy VII was/is for its time. There’s some high quality art and other various aspects to Final Fantasy VI and there’s some smoothness to the combat, but it’s a lot more simplified. I think the reason you’re praising it so highly is because of how enjoyable V and VI was when Square brought them to PS1 after the release of VII and VIII.

I never played 5, 6 or 7 ( 10 is my first final fantasy game) but i do wish 5 and 6 get the same remake treatment as 7 does cos the opinion around here surounding that game seems good so id like to know more. Still waiting for the next chapter of FF7R tho

This has been my opinion since the early 2000s

FFV is the GOAT.....IMO

FF6 and FF7 are just steampunk and cyberpunk spinoffs of FFV

FFV definitely has the best gameplay prior to the 3D games. FF6 had the best story. I feel both were defeated by IX, XI, XIV, and Tactics though.

Ive played V and VII to completion, and I’ve played a few hours of FFVI on the PS1.

I completely disagree, especially when it comes to FFV.

V has a bad, barely-there story, the cast has some enjoyable banter and that’s it, and I truly don’t get the praise for its job system. Way too often, you’ll get wiped out if you don’t have a specific job, and they were NEVER fun to grind. I can’t properly articulate why FFV was so thoroughly unenjoyable for me, but it was. Very annoying experience from start to finish

Never had an issue with the job system in V. As long as you had some form of healing, you never had much to worry about until the very very end.

Now if you said III? I would completely agree. That game greatly punished you for not using very specific job combos for specific bosses and basically required you to either grind or get teh secret jobs to finish the title. Not so with V.

For some odd reason I had a less terrible time with III (Pixel Remaster; DS version was tedious and mean and I never came close to finishing it).

But that doesn’t really matter since the only FF from I-V that I like is IV lol

I dunno about V (haven't played it a whole lot) but VI yes.
VIII and IX are also better than VII.
Doesn't help that VII looks like absolute ass.

I prefer 7 over 6 but it’s not by a wide margin.

5 though, nah, it’s a great game but 6 and 7 both have solid stories and characters which 5 lacks.

All this is irrelevant as 9 is the actual king though (and both the FF creator and composer consider 9 the best, so just saying).

5 is good in its own right but it's just not in the same category as 6 and 7 - and I think those 2 games are overrated by fans anyways.

9 shits all over all 3 combined and then some.

FF is polarizing. I couldn’t finish 9.

That is not a hot take at all OP. Its just the truth, especially for anyone who actually played final fantasy before 7 made it famous on ps1.

I really need to replay FF5 and I guess 6 as well cause I don't remember 5 at all. I'll play 6 just so that I can properly compare it to 7.

FF V is the best Final Fantasy gameplay-wise. It has a lot to offer and good replayability. World is huge and interesting with a ton of things to discover, lots of items. Story is really secondary. FF V is for people looking for a good gameplay experience, good mechanics, huge world full of secrets.

VI and VII feel absolutely ridiculous in terms of story and mood. I simply can't take seriously anything about them. And their game systems aren't as good as V.

I love FFVI and can see why its many peoples favorite but the combat is even more braindead easy than VII. Edgar’s Tools & Sabin’s Blitz are good for the whole game, moves you get in the first hours of play lol

At least V focuses on gameplay so I could see an argument there. But VI? Naw even VII’s materia combinations provide more gameplay depth than VI. VI’s gameplay is set to baby mode the entire first half, only getting more interesting the second. The esper progression system of learning abilities also isn’t interesting at all, they do almost the same thing with GFs in VIII and weapons/armor in IX.
