next they need to enable full 48Gbps usage of the HDMI2.1 so we can get full chroma at 4k 120fps! (if its a software limitation)
I think the HDMI chip used in the PS5 and XBX are both limited to 40 Gbps so I don't think a software solution would work.

Xbox is 48Gbps, which is why i was puzzled that PS5 wasnt, was hoping it was a software oversight, shame if not

oh my bad, looks like you only need 40Gbps for full chroma 4k 120fps, its just that PS5 is limited to 32Gbps. principles the same, just wrong numbers

Game lists is nice. No more scrolling through your entire library to find the games you want to reinstall. I can also make a backlog list.
I really wish I could display the folders as it was set on ps4. It’s nice to have this option but damn. I just hate going to library. I took The time to go through every game I had and try to put the ones I was interested in in a few folders on top.

the only issues I had with PS4 folders is that you could not pin them into a stationary place.
I sorted everything into alphabetic order with folders #-B, C-E, F-H, I-K, and so on. also a Demos and VR folder.
and I wish I could have simply had them in order at all times.

ridiculous it took them this long but at least it's finally here.

edit: and it doesn't support VRR at 1440p

take your time Sony... you'll get there eventually. :messenger_unamused:

I can't believe some people have the audacity to criticise Sony who is doing everything right over something so minor and irrelevant. Those PC players got no chill, they have been waiting for this moment for years, they can't miss a chance to tell the world how powerful their 1000$ graphics card is.

My TV is a bit of an older one, and while it was way ahead of its time with Freesync + Gsync + HDMI-VRR + 120hz support, it only supports 4K60, 1440p120 and 1080p120 because it's only HDMI 2.0

before I always had to use my PS5 at 1080p120 when I wanted to use 120hz modes in games.

with this update I can finally go up to 1440p at 120hz

so that's another use.

Thanks! This is the thing that I wanted to know.

Anyone have a spare EU/UK code? Eager to finally use my 1440p 144hz monitor on PS5.
Much appreciated!

Good to see Sony finally support 1440p.

just make a US account real quick and use a US code someone has left... that's how I did it.

you should always have at least 1 EU, 1 US and 1 JP account because you often get free 2 play games or demos only in some regions, so that way you are covered.

the PS5 is fucking weird with enabling 1440p tho, it always tests all image modes (60hz, 120hz, HDR on/off) if you set it to 1440p... and I might now know why after talking to a friend who has a Sony TV.

so Sony TVs apparently have issues with 1440p signals, which further explains why Sony refused to support it I guess.

so I looked up some rtings reviews and well,
some Sony TVs, recent ones even, support only certain refresh rates at certain resolutions.
so some 2021 models only support 4K120hz and 1080p120hz but not 1440p120hz 🙃

other models don't support 1440p at all... and yet other models only support 1440p if the device can force it somehow, like with a custom resolution setting using the Nvidia control panel.

that is so fucking weird, but I guess that's why Sony really took ages to support it, and still don't support it on their 1440p device, the PS4 Pro...

EDIT: correction.. looks like you only need 40Gbps for full chroma 4k 120fps, its just that PS5 is limited to 32Gbps, so if they can bump it to 40 that would be perfect
I think the HDMI chipset the PS5 uses (which I believe is the same one they used for the PS4 Pro) is the limiting factor. But we'll see.

Aside from the interface running at 2k ( probably down sampled from 4k ), is there any use for the resolution on PS5 ?

Is there any game that support that resolution ?

I mean I know most 4k 60 fps big titles aren't actually 4k and they are at 2k range, but does the game it self support that ? Or does it do 2k upscaled to 4k then down sampled to 2k monitor ? If it's the later then I imagine the graphics gonna be ugly

From iFixit
PS4 - Panasonic MN86471A HDMI Communication LSI
PS4 Pro - Panasonic MN864729 HDMI transmitter
PS5 - Panasonic MN864739 HDMI redriver

Clearly not the same chip.
PS4 - HDMI 2.0a
PS4 Pro - HDMI 2.0b
PS5 - HDMI 2.1

Isn't 1440p still in testing phase?
That may be resolved after testing.

Ps4 pro supports 4k, but not 1440p.
DS 4 works only on PS4 games on PS5.
Dualsense is not compatible with PS4, but you can play PS3 with it.

What's wrong with you Sony?

I understand your point but I don’t think it’s deal breaking. If the Dualsense wasn’t an improvement over the DS4 I would be really pissed.

Are they going to allow more FreeSync TV's that are not HDMI 2.1 to use VRR or nah?

If you had asked me a few months ago I would've told you "Forget it, definitely not going to happen". But now that SONY is manufacturing its own monitors for PC gaming... it's possible, who knows. 1440p support is the perfect example, it seemed impossible a few months ago since it's not a TV standard, and yet there we have it. If SONY really wants to start making PC gamers happy they'll have to enable Freesync eventually, I guess.

I mean I have 3 Dualsenses, and all of them have a mediocre dpad.

I also heard from some fighting game players that don't like the dpad.

it feels spongey
For me more than spongey the issue I have is that it… “moves” and then hits the hard shell of the controller. It is not as good as I expected, but still in the great category compared to awesome (which was PS Vita).

my issue simply is that die DS4 has a better one but is blocked by Sony in PS5 games... like... it's such a stupid limitation

It is a stupid limitation, but if I could use a DS4 I still would not. Overall DS is a big improvement over it.

depends on the game. if I play high intensity stuff for long periods of time my hands cramp on the Dualsense but not the DS4.

the ergonomics are different and werid for my hands.

I like the triggers better and the sticks, but, honestl, everything else IMO is a downgrade.

Side by side it feels better than my DS4. Maybe I got lucky with my controller. It could be possible they they changed it a bit since launch. I certainly didn’t buy my PS5 at launch so maybe that’s why.

It's the overall shape of the DualSense that makes the d-pad worse on top of the d-pad's functionality not being the best when it comes to fighting games. DS4 is better in that regard. Still even with that, the DS4 is still inferior to the DualSense overall when you combine the ergonomics with features. I don't even think about the DS4 anymore, not even with fighting games because even when I was on PS4, I didn't even use the DS4 for fighting games because the d-pad was inferior to my Hori Fighting Commander pro d-pad.

could be, I have a launch DualSense, one from like 3 months after launch, and a red one whenever that one launched

The haptics are actually an upgrade due to the much wider range of vibrations that they allow. Also the USB C port allows faster charging over the DS4. Some consider the elimination of the light bar a welcome improvement since I don’t see it off my monitor when I game.
