Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

In the context of "next-gen", it's pretty average. However it's still a gorgeous game, and this update should make it a more pleasent experience, especially for us PS5 players who can now enjoy it 60 FPS.

Back to next-gen, I think how we define this term is important and it may change from person to person. Higher resolution textures, reworked geometry and plugging in RT are simply not enough to constitute "next=gen" for me. It's the case with most games, even native next-gen games seem like PS4 games which have had their graphics dialled really high.

As for what we can call "next-gen". In my opinion a next-gen title will have to have things like micro-polygon rendering systems, like what we're seeing with Nanite. dynamic global illumination systems. Making use of next-gen features like new enemy and world/NPC variety and behaviours with next-gen AI. Next-gen physics systems, making environments react more accurately to input and so much more. Mesh/Primitive Shaders and so much more.

But at the end of the day, regardless of technologies and buzzwords, the visuals will do the talking.
Everything using ray tracing, for example, should be considered as "next gen", imo. Especially RTGI.

Simply 'cause it wasnt possible during last gen era. Hence, "next gen"

Minecraft RT, Quake RT, Portal RTX and etc. are all next gen to my eyes.

Would The Witcher 3 new version work with last gen hardware? No? So it should be considered as next gen

I have over 500+ pictures of GOW:R, thought i post some good looking gameplay shots with no spoilers. I have better looking pictures but they contain heavy spoilers, i will post them later with spoiler tags. Overall the game looks really nice and better than what i epxected after all the trailers and cross gen talk. There are parts (mostly the places from the older game) where you can clearly see that its a PS4 game but than there comes some part later on in the game where it looks incredible. After playing GOW 18 and GOW: R back to back it clearly has some pretty nice improvements. It could look much much better if it was current gen only but it still looks and performs solid so i cannot complain too much. And the facial animations are much much better than GOW 18, like ND level good.

Me and brother were in complete awe when we got to this part of the game.

The landscapes, the environment, foliage and lighting were so gorgeous.

Imagine what they can pull of on next-gen hardware with next-gen rendering systems.
And yet we still have people in this thread a few posts above wondering if they can pull off a tiny, life like forest on PS5/Series... lol. The visual big boys are going to melt peoples faces off once they make proper current gen only games considering how great some of their XBO/PS4 exclusives look on SeriesX/PS5.

This. The bolded part in particular.

You can tell this is an old game that just got polished up, it is obvious it wasn't created from the ground up on next gen. If you ask me what does next-gen mean to me I would tell you having a game that look like The Matrix demo not just in terms of graphics, but for example the number of cars and NPCs, how traffic is real-time, the usage of Nanite, Lumen, the amount of polygons etc. This is what next-gen means to me.

Lol, son just tag me I was the one who asked if we could re-create that forest scene on PS5/Series X which looked incredible. Just tag me I like engaging with like-minded people on this topic. Anyways, I really hope you're right with the bolded statement it has been a while since I was wowed by a game graphically honestly (The Matrix demo aside).

Facial expression in ragnarock are way behind tlou2 dude, majority of faces and digital acting are the weak point of the game graphically.

The difference between atreus and ellie are like madonna and lizzo...

Even if it was cross-gen the PS5 version can and should still look much better than it is. It is like they did not even bother with upgrading the game's graphics which is a shame for us PS5 owners honestly. This screams LAZY. Look at HFW it is cross-gen but the game still looked incredible on the PS5 heck even on the PS4.

Having said that, to be fair to Santa Monica I am yet to see it in person on my OLED, it might look much better than I thought, but even then how much better would it look?

seriously... games can't look that much better than this. And this is just a ps4 game. holy shit!
I was in awe when I played this.
Yet I still think horizon and tlou1 prooooobably look better but GOWR presents better as a complete package Art+Graphics
edit: of course games will look better than this. But the steps are getting much smaller

They can look infinitely better than this...
Ofcourse, when the real current gen games start to roll out after 2023 they should look much much better than this.

Been thinking about Spider-Man 2 today with all the twitter noise sparked by Tony Todd... Slimy posted a FFH gif some time ago of Spidey with glider flying through the city. Couldn't find it but I do think SM2 will be extremely comparable.

Just thinking about the compromises and decisions that were made on the rendering systems in HFW to make sure it runs on the PS4...I'm really curious what they'll pull off with the sequel which will no doubt be a PS5 exclusive.

Maybe we can see PS5-only Horizon earlier if those remake rumors are true.

Nearly as big a leap as HZD > HFW for the most part. Don't quite understand the underappreciation.

The under-appreciation comes from certain fanboys of other systems that can not handle the fact that Sony does make the greatest games at the moment. As a Green/Blue/Red rat myself, I can only say the new GOW:R looks fantastic, and both Sony and Nintendo churn out great exclusives all the time. Only 1 system really stays behind in that area and I can see if you're a fanboy of that system you could be quite jealous of the others, so the logical thing for them is to try and ignore the greatness of the games they have no access too.

I'd say, instead of being salty about that, start a campaign to a make sure that certain company releases great AAA games on a regular basis. MS has so many studios now, and almost nothing of great value is released. I really hope they'll step up their game with them. Anyways, be salty about that, but don't put the salt on others.

No, ND is experienced studio with bigger budgets, than recently founded studio.
Recently founded studio full of experienced people from top studios such as ND, Epic and etc.

I mean, look at the game in motion. It's gorgeous.

Yes, it will do some things better than TLOU Remake or Part II, for sure. Character models are Matrix Awakening tier.

Focus on some things.

Also new and small studios tend to push the games as much as possible, because they're eager to make a name for themselves. A good example was 4A games and the Metro series.

I don't see any reason why Insomniac can't hit that level of fidelity in one of their visual modes if Spider-Man 2 is a PS5 exclusive. They certainly have the pedigree, talent, artists, engineers and like Naughty Dog have now earned an almost unlimited budget from Sony.

Waiting to see this game has been torture.

Other than their new animations and physics systems, I am interested to see their character model upgrades. Scott Porter said they recast him as Harry becayse they wanted to go more "photorealistic" - Similar to the reasoning we got for Peter's changed face model (and I think that's going to get a major uplift compared to MM), but now we have a quote for Insomniac's graphical/artstyle intentions.

Exactly. Been hearing SM2 is a PS5 exclusive, so no excuse for them not to make the game look absolutely gorgeous akin to that screenshot ChiefDada ChiefDada shared. Insomniac are hella talented I am expecting SM2 to look hella good!

And thats ok. 2009 CG is Avatar an I will take Avatar in 2024.

Hellblade might not look as good as Avatar or 2000 era Marvel CG, but it looks absolutely magnificent.

No idea how much the Avatar inengine trailer is going to get downgraded, but even if it gets downgraded, PS5 first party games should come very close to this if they do not waste 50% of the GPU targeting native 4k like those morons over at Insomniac.

I like my graphics dark, bleak and grim.
visuals this gen have been for the most part overly upbeat and colourful.
I wish more developers were allowed to take more risks and made more deliberate artistic choices with their visuals

We're not far off from the game awards. i care little for who actually wins what but the game reveals should be interesting. It's a good prediction say we're going to get some next-gen goodness. Kojima has been teasing Death Stranding 2 for months now, and hopefully we'll see it at TGA with some actual in-engine or even better gameplay footage. What they achieved visually with the first game was mind-blowing, I can only imagine what a native next-gen sequel would look like.

Yeah but the animations and the way the character is able to turn 360 degrees on a dime is a problem that we have today unfortunately. One thing I am most looking forward to in the future of games is animations more than anything else could be because I am mainly a sports gamer too.
