SEGA reveals Hyenas by Creative Assembly

Why do you think so? Most of the video game marketing happens online these days anyway, which means it's way easier and way cheaper for independent developers and their projects to generate publicity and become known.
There's a stigma surrounding indie games that taints the image of them, and some people see them as one tiny step above phone games(even on more hardcore gaming sites like this one). I don't know why this came to be and I don't know how it can be fixed, but I like to think that the big publishers conditioned people into thinking that every good video game needs to be a AAA blockbuster release in order for someone to have fun.

Even friends of mine who are semi-casual console gamers consider indie games to be 'lesser than' for some weird reason they can't explain, yet they're the first ones to complain to me about the latest CoD, Street Fighter, Battlefield, or FIFA title being released with half-assed content. It took a From Software game selling millions and getting tons of accolades(including from word of mouth) for them to finally give Elden Ring a shot.

While it may be cheaper(not sure about easier), it also can potentially sell way less.

Reminds me of when (insert well established developer) that tried making a (insert popular FPS or TPS BR/ competitive shooter) and they failed miserably. I can name 3 current in the works(including this) and 5 previous gems. How many you got? Crap i think I just thought of 2 more.

Good games will always stand out, not matter whether they are called indie games or not, even if there's a lot of shovelware found in that particular market segment.
Wouldn't it be cool if the Alien Isolation team - collectively - said goodbye to Creative Assembly and tried to make their own games? Even if it's a financial risk, I'd say, it's worth it, because the creative soul needs freedom and passion to live on. Good developers are highly valuable, so it shouldn't be too hard for them to gather some funds (in addition to starting a campaign on kickstarter or the likes).

Seriously, who writes this crap?

This game makes me think of the good times I had, turning on my Xbox and installing Bleeding Edge; forgetting about it until I had to clear space.

Since its reveal, sources have since shown me gameplay of HYENAS under the request of anonymity and under the condition that the gameplay isn’t made public.

First off, I do need to say that the first-person title by Creative Assembly actually looks fairly impressive and I am surprised that gameplay wasn’t actually shown during the showcase. The game’s art style reminds me of a more detailed Borderlands and from what I saw, the game looked pretty complete for a title that’s scheduled to release in 2023.

An interesting part of HYENAS is the zero gravity rooms that make for a unique environment for an FPS game, where players need to boost themselves from point to point in order to move fast and effectively. This was done by pointing your cursor at a location and hitting a button/key to make you boost towards it. Once the location has been selected, the character uses their arms to propel them forward, just like astronauts do (basically swimming in the air). Whilst moving towards that designated location, players can still freely move their cursor off from that point to fire their weapons, which makes for some hectic engagements. The character interacts with the environment too, so if you want to stay on a wall, ceiling, or floating object, the character will hold on to it with one hand.

The premise of HYENAS is simple, enter the map as a team of three, loot merch, and extract to win. In order to extract players must first hit a “Quota”, which is based on points that are automatically redeemed on the loot you pick up. Each lootable merch item has a value depending on its rarity, the super rare Sonic the Hedgehog teddy for example is worth 5000 points with the game’s Quota being 10,000 points. Sonic is only available in Vaults though, which requires the player to use a breaching device that will take around 40 seconds to cut open the door. So, it’s a high-risk, high-reward option if you want to win the game quickly as AI and other players will be aware of what you’re trying to achieve.

In addition to just looting merch to hit the quota, players can also loot weapon attachments, grenades, health, and armor. Downed players will also drop their loot, including the points needed to hit your quota.

No gameplay but:

I am still not sure who this got greenlit because if I was the developer, I could have scrapped the idea, looks uninspired, and boring. Trying to go for that other popular game (do not recall the name) with seasons and characters from other cartoons/movies. Maybe I am too cynical and pretty much barely play any FPS whatsoever, and kind of hate them.

Still, if this is successful, then more than happy for the developers. I am a good loser, so I will rather be wrong than right for this game's success, but still does not look like something that will succeed.

We got our first look at gameplay from HYENAS during the Future Games Show Spring Showcase. A developer presentation from Creative Assembly also revealed a new playable character, Hero-Ki, a former cosplayer who can disguise as their enemies. SEGA also revealed that a PC Alpha is coming this weekend, which you can sign up for at playhyenas.com. Hyenas is coming soon to PC, Xbox and PlayStation.

If this isn't free to play, it's going to fail. If this is free to play, it's still going to fail, but maybe not as much.

Oh yeah, great idea. Zero gravity gunfights. It worked so well for lawbreakers.

I wonder if the whole thing is zero gravity or just this one mode or something? Either way, it looks like shit.

Reeks of pandering to a demographic that doesn't play games.

based on what? I feel I've heard some of you say this shit more then SEGA themselves have ever even hinted or suggested anything like that.

Someone dancing in a Sonic costume is pandering? The demographic of hyenas? Space people? Help me out here man.

Lots of shit talking about a game people haven't played, as usual.
My shit talking is completely based on a multiplayer only shooter that isn't free to play, and character design that reminds me of bleeding edge and that awful ps5 launch car combat game. I already wasted my time looking up bleeding edge, not doing that again for the car game.

But I don't need to play this game to judge it based on those merits. I have precedent.

I got into the private beta but it looked so bad I never bothered playing. They keep sending emails begging me to play it and the servers are already dead.

Creative assembly must be sweating.

Drag queens, proudly sharing his bulge with the world. Stupid "cosplayers". Just, disgusting, absolutely disgusting. Wtf is this game for?

Female pronouns in character. Whichever they use normally out of character. Drag is performative so the queen is a separate identity.

The whole stupid thing is performative, that's just a dude, that's a he 100% of the goddamn time.

A lot of these games were greenlit before the backlash started in earnest against generic multiplayer games, the developers must have known this was gonna face a steep uphill battle as the communities started to sour on these sorts of cash grabs.

People are knee-deep in blood with their pitchforks out after Marvel Avengers and all the generic multiplayer shooters over the last year or two, and Hyenas is launching right into that space.

Not to mention that there are 5-6 giants, Apex Legends and Destiny, and those sorts of games, that got this space locked down. At best this is gonna face the fate of Rainbow Six Extraction.

Do you also shout "its a man" when animated characters are voiced by men? Weird hill to die on.

Yeah well, difficult to not say something when I read a post that silly. It's like reading some really dumb scientology factoid, the worst part is some people take it seriously.

This is looking like straight up GOTY material. The creativity and originality is off the charts. Who the fuck wants Alien Isolation 2 when you got Hyenas? We should be grateful that the devs are bringing such a high quality game to us. I hope the devs have prepared an online store that's filled to the brim with exciting microtransactions, cosmetics and loot boxes (sorry, I meant surprise mechanics). I love that shit in my games. I have no doubts Hyenas will sweep the awards come TGA. Resident Evil 4? Zelda Tears of the Kingdom? Spider-Man 2? Final Fantasy 16? Straight up garbage when you compare it to Hyenas.
