Didn't certain EA games (Burnout Paradise?) feature dynamic billboards for selling real world ad space?

Boy, you're in luck, because that's what MS is currently investigating!

Since its launch in 2017, Microsoft has convinced over 25 million people to pay a monthly subscription fee to access a substantial library of Xbox Game Pass titles. For those not as interested in a monthly subscription, though, Microsoft is now floating a potential model where players could view an ad in exchange for a short period of game time.

The nod toward potential ad-supported game time comes from Xbox Corporate VP for Game Creator Experience and Ecosystem Sarah Bond, who told Rolling Stone UK that she's constantly looking to "introduce more business model diversity" for game developers.

"We’ve talked about how we’re experimenting with other models, like what does it mean for advertising in games which is more prevalent in mobile—are there models of that that work well in PC and console?" Bond said. "Are there other models where you might have timed slices of games and stuff like that?"

Bond's tease comes a few months after some Game Pass players noticed a Spanish-language survey gauging their interest in a cheaper Game Pass tier that included "advertisements before the game" (reminiscent of Netflix's recent ad-supported tier rollout). And Insider reported last year that Microsoft was working with ad agencies to "let advertisers place ads inside free-to-play Xbox games" (expanding on the current practice of ads running on the Xbox dashboard).

Microsoft's signaled interest in attaching ads to games isn't new; the company bought in-game ad network Massive in 2006 before shutting it down in 2010. That effort was part of a rising wave of in-game ad interest that crested during the early years of the millennium.

They'd really be going for realism. Billboards are dotted all along the major streets where I live.

Is it smart enough to know who purchased it and who didn’t? If I preorder something, they shouldn’t harass me with marketing to buy it. Some games send you emails weeks later with your stats, so if it’s smart enough to track my stats then it’s smart enough to look to see if I purchased the game.

Speaking as a PS person with a XBO that chimes in to check for updates every now and then. The injection of game advertisements takes away from the personalized experience. I miss when I could change my wallpaper. Now all they do is install app links reminding you to check something out. At least on PS4 they do. If I wanted something I’d go buy it. Who turns on their console not knowing a single thing about a game?

They also should advertise during gameplay, imagine how awsome that would be. Can’t wait!!!
To be honest im absolutely flabbergasted that we dont get adverts/product placement in games(by enlarge). Fornite comes closest with those ingame events i suppose.

Broadband/faster internet popups when yours craps out while playing COD seems like such a no brainer to me.

Can Microsoft be any more loathsome lately?

Gtfo with this shit. The ads are already BAD enough on the Xbox frickin UI. It's not enough to keep this shit on the STORE?

I'm sorry but this pisses me off. It's suck a lack of respect and care for the gamers who've supported their shitty ecosystem.

I have a Series X and it's been nothing but disappointment. Microsoft thinks thata having GamePass means they can now raise the bar on advertisements and other bullshit. If you don't own an Xbox primarily for Gamepass then this has been a miserable generation.

Awesome. They should advertise their first party games.
Sure, but I'd prefer they do it in a way that's not overly intrusive to users. Yes, it's quick and easy to get out of it, and I haven't experienced it yet, but it's a minor annoyance that just shouldn't be forced onto all users.

Oh man, the XBDF is out in full force on this one.
I can only imagine at what point nothingburgers stop being nothingburgers to you, maybe when the dog shits in your bed?

MS already shat their own bed - this is them shitting in other people’s. And, of course, their ever-loyal fans (and shills) are rolling around in it and saying how good it feels on their.

Hell, adamsapple adamsapple is practically fucking orgasmic in here.

Of course, but I am also allowed to believe this really isn't such a big deal as some here make it out to be, when you can just press exit and never see that screen again.

Until the next time you boot up the console maybe...

Do you not see how when we start letting companies up the ante with anti-gamer things like Ads, we're another step closer to an even worse anti-gamer experience?

It's like exercising our "rights" as gamers. If people don't exercise their rights in the real world they eventually get taken away.

If you can't see the similarities here then I don't know what to tell you.

These people are re-affirming to me why gaming is the way it is today. Why the cost of gaming is higher, why gaas is destroying franchises and devs, why we have to play Crossplay against PC, why I can't find the Campaign menu on the COD launcher, why devs downgrade the shit out of games, etc

There are too many gamers defending this crap every time something new arises.

The Switch delivers ads to me everytime I wake it from sleep. Let's not get carried away here and start acting like MS are the only ones.

Edit: almost every time, sometimes it's links to tips and such.
Why am I not surprised that of all the 3 companies, it is of course MS that goes with these shitty practices first ?
No I didn't say they were the only ones doing it. But they're definitly the first spamming you with giant ads when you open your console. Also I said "first" because I remember online multiplayer used to be free on other consoles. But Sony and Nintendo understood people where ready to pay for p2p online multiplayer. And so I think these annoying full screen ads will end on the other consoles too. Thank you Microsoft for showing the way anyway.

They have done that with Xbox Showcase, Forza and Starfield. Not a big deal. People try to outrage over that are hilarious.
First time I saw that. Before I only saw a small thing on the dashboard, but never a full picture pop up, that has highlighted the buy button, while my tv switches slowly on. MS really seem to want to go to the courts for such behaviors.

I can just imagine all of you guys standing in a circle fully erect looking for any Xbox news to skew into “ bad news “.

And then I imagine I’m in the middle of that circle… 😱
You can thank MS for that. They make it too easy..

Just when I think Xbox cant disappoint or push me away any more, turn on XSX today to have a quick relaxed Chess Ultra game. And get a full screen pop add. FUCK OFF. Nails n' coffin, straws n' camels back, nearly done with this shitty platform. If it weren't for some back compat games, I'd be selling it.

This behavior does not violate anything. Same way Apple TV and other streaming services commercials that greet users do not violate anything.

People seem are try to be outrage over COD for some reason :pie_thinking:

I realised that most games I have played on my series x are 360 games. I spent £450 to replay 360 games. I was just thinking of selling it the other day but can't be bothered. Its the worst xbox console by far. Even xbox one was miles better.

Are you guys new to Microsoft......cuz clearly you must NOT have Xboxes as such this really shouldnt bother you.........unless you do have Xboxes but still have never seen these ads so this really shouldnt bother you.

Theres also a "popup" for major Dashboard updates and if you are in the preview ring, youve probably seen these "Exit" screens more often than youve booted directly to dashboard at this point.

That's sure some backpeddle there. Also, the ads on the Switch platform take up a 3rd of the screen, is there an arbitrary maximum ratio of real estate used for ad space before we start complaining about it?

I'm not thrilled about ads, but again you took the opportunity to act like MS is to blame, when you are just misguided. The CD-i released in 1991 had ads that were displayed to the user when powering on the unit and when switching between activities. These could not be disabled nor skipped by the user, at least at launch

Regarding the claim that Xbox was the first console to require a monthly service fee for online play. This is patently false. Sega Dreamcast released 2 years prior, required a subscription to SegaNet for online multiplayer. I also believe that Atari Jaguar and the 3DO had a short lives multiplayer subscription that required monthly payment.

Instead of focusing on pinning the "big bad boggy man" badge on MS, learn some gaming history.

The new UI really ruined everything. I had all my digital games neatly organized in groups and could scroll down quickly and everything was fine. I could even remove stuff like Gamepass from the groups section on the main screen if I didn’t want it there.

The new update comes out though? All my groups are gone and I can’t seem to put them on the main screen to replace all the fucking ADS. (Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s like you can only have one custom Group on the main screen now).

Now I need to look at adds right when I start up the system too? Holy shit they may as well beam ads into our dreams like Futurama at this point.

I'm reading that it doesn't pop for people in stand-by mode. Apparently, there were ones for the June Showcase, Starfield and Forza. I feel like I'm missing out. Sad.
Yeah I got one for the June showcase. I feel like I may have gotten one for Starfield too but can't remember. Definitely have gotten one asking me to join GamePass (extra weird because I have been subbed for years).

Didn't think much of it, you just hit B and immediately move on. If this happened every time I booted it up I'd dislike it but a couple times a year for big news or releases, eh. Whatever.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
The ads are the reason I just keep my Xbox offline unless I'm actively buying/updating a game. I'm not playing any multiplayer games, so it's literally just an opportunity for them to make my experience worse. Why bother?

Not like I'd expect any better from MS.

Microsoft has been really awful with their dashboard. In the current version there are only a few small buttons at the top, one row for your installed games/apps and the rest are larger tiles with ads and game pass stuff (which shouldn't appear if you don't have the sub and therefore can't play the games without paying). And of course you can't change anything and hide things you don't want to see.

Its an inanimate object, but when I walk pass it now in my lounge I often stick my two fingers up at it and tell it to fuck off. Cheers me up.

I'll train my dog to shit in front of your house, about 3 meters away from the entrace to your front yard. It's a total nothingburger so you'll be fine with it. Two weeks later, I'm gonna let it shit in your front yard, but somewhere far away from your way to the front door so it'll be a total nothingburger, too. Another two weeks after it's gonna shit next to your door - still a nothingburger, you can just ignore it since shit doesn't lie exactly in the way you usually take in and out of your house. Add another two weeks and shit's smeared all over your doorknob. I guess that's still a nothingburger lol, you can just use a papertowel to protect your hands when you want to get into your house. I can only imagine at what point nothingburgers stop being nothingburgers to you, maybe when the dog shits in your bed?
Wow. Just wow.

I've never seen one of these. I didn't get the COD one either. Someone should start an outrage thread over Microsoft cheating people out of ads.

I wonder where you see these ads on switch menu honestly? I'm used to open my switch, see my games and no ads. I'd blame Nintendo for things like wanting to sell my data to google without asking me by adding an hidden option in the console preferences but I've definitly never seen any ads on the launch menu. Are you talking about the E-Shop maybe?

You say I'm backpeddling but then you defend yourself with whataboutism... Your examples don't change the fact that Sony and Nintendo began making us pay for online after MS showed them that most of us were ok to pay for online on our consoles. If dreamcast payed online service really was this relevant, then I'm sure Sony and Nintendo wouldn't have waited resepctivly the PS4 and the Switch to make us pay to play P2P online games.

Edit: Ok I see what you mean with Switch ads, they're definitly there but I'm so used to press a 3 times while changing my monitor to HDMI that I never see them. Nothing like that COD ad you have to see so that you can select that button to tell you're not interrested.
