you = not making any sense

Comparison is bad, but they inspire in me the same level of "these people are crazy and think they're actually accomplishing something; how can anyone take them seriously?"

This crap needs to stop. They should save their faux Robin Hood theatrics for an actual worthwhile cause, instead of pissing off consumers.

Sony doesn't seem to be staying up and safe though....

I said they will have to stay up and safe. ^_^

And the hackers will come back. Some may move on to attack other sites too until the digital economy and industry matures further. Ah… the future of digital goods is being forged as we speak.

What war ? Only the participating hackers are trying to breach Sony's security system again. The rest of us are just spectators and victims.

Hackers, just take over and run sony. You're probably more organized.

I don't think so. The more people they involved, the more likely the crime will fail. It's better to hack with only a few highly experienced hackers. They can't manage a business in so many countries. Exposing credit card numbers is probably not a good way to treat consumers too. ^_^

I have no real contribution to this discussion, although as a consumer this shit is getting right fucking out of hand (lack of information therein), and just want to use this thread to yell:

FOR FUCK'S SAKE I JUST WANT TO PLAY PORTAL 2 WITH MY FRIEND. WHY CAN'T YOU JUST GRANT ME THIS?

I don't get it. Why do this? It not only hurts Sony but regular customers as well. The common man should be left unharmed!

Edit: I think I have a solution. Sony needs to hire GeoHot to hack the hackers and take them down. It's the only way. Fight fire with fire.

1 vs 100 probably wont work (assuming the hackers is 100 man powered).

This leaves me all kinds of confused. So I first think it's Anon but they deny it with an official statement. Then I think it's for profit hackers but then I hear about a file called Anonymous planted on purpose with the text of "We are legion". Then I hear of this third attack where the hackers intend to post personal info on Sony's website. If it's for profit, why post sensitive info. Why not just sell it? I assume it's the same attacker who attacked Sony to get the info.

Are there now hacker wars where one set of hackers looking to make another set of hackers look guilty? Is this an Anon rogue? Part of the Anon grand master plan to bring Sony to it's knees by saying that it's structure is "decentralized" so we have nothing to do with it? A for profit hacker could have done this at any time. Why now?

More questions than answers .. this is getting annoying!

It's incredible that such a powerful entity as Sony can be attacked like this. In these capitalistic times, where corporations have such power, that they can have been sued to death and back over things they shouldn't go to jail for, I can't help but wonder...

These hackers seem to be out for blood, not to steal peoples money!? They don't seem to be thieves, but have political motives, and are basically stabbing at the collective bee hive potato couch people, "telling them" to stop dealing with a company like Sony for what they do to the little man.

When we will look back at the legacy of PS3, I think we will look back at it with a facepalm, because from E3 2006 to now, it's been one long battle uphill. And while the two other mastodons share their bowl of the ignorance too, I think we really have to conclude Sony as the winner. They had most too loose coming from their PS2 power success to this.

I read on another forum, that there might be an attack on SOE? But that might be a good thing - Besides people losing their jobs, SOE has to be one of the bottom of the barrel people scrapers, of treating people like dirt. From Everquest to SWG, from NGE to Vanguard, their practice against the community has been... Not good to put it mildly. I really hold no love for SOE.
I want all their employees(outside of John Smedley) to find new positions elsewhere, but I really can't stand their way of doing business. Planetside Next is like... It's like it's just pissing me in the face because it exists. :(

So is it safe to say that hacking will become a criminal offense (with multiple years of jail) when this is all said and done?

It already is, but it totally depends on what type of hacking it is. Breaking into networks and steal info is illegal while other forms of hacking are perfectly legal.

edit: I hate you, test_account. I'm going to delete you.
Hehe, well, at least you confirmed that it was him =) I havnt watched Dexter myself, so i couldnt know for sure.

I think it's a bogus threat from people who don't like Sony. The eventual posting of sensitive information is probably just a matter of time since the data is out there, but making that threat will make it look like a new breach.

Anyone could have made up the threat, though. Doesn't take a hacker to do it.

Shift the blame all you want fact still remains Sony had inferior-than-hackers security. If they had firewalls that oneupped hacker's tools, detected it, stopped it, they could have prevented all of this.

Though I bet now having state of the art firewall technology protecting sensitive data is one area Sony won't goof up in.

Bravo..You have literally made me "shake my head"..that bolded part..what does that even MEAN?

Is the guy in the orange vest the villain from the latest season of Dexter?
Yep. He was also the main character in the short-lived TV show called Eli Stone.
I was so pissed off when they cancelled it... Especially given the shows they didn't cancel.

people are seriously worried about identity theft because someone has their adress and name?
the world must be a pretty dangerous place for you, huh? death lurking at every corner

i'm far from a sony apologist, actually they're my least favorite company in the electronics business since the rootkit fiasco
and i understand that you're upset if you had your CC information on the PSN
but this talk about identity theft through basic data is getting ridiculous

Why can't these guys do this to companies that are really fucking people over like credit card companies, wall street, or health care ones. I understand they want to provide the anti-Sony lulz on the internet or whatever bullshit but they've got to be smart enough to know that at a certain point you're just wasting your time. You cannot hate a company like Sony THAT much to go to those lengths to bring them down. It's like Sony burned their houses down or something.

Game Analyst said:

It's been illegal for a long time now (the kind of hacking in this particular case). These guys just haven't been caught yet.

Even Mitnick eventually got caught. I don't think many hackers actually think of their activities as federal crimes that they can get put in prison for a long time for, because they have a long history of feeling invincible.

Oh great prophet Vigilant Walrus, please bring us more message of enlightenment from our benevolent hacker(s).

For we, the little potato couch people, have neither the wisdom nor heart to understand the hacker's way! After all, our eyes are blinded by the evil Sony's fancy tricks of videogame and "PSN", and our ears are deafened by the other junior members/questionable websites false(?) prophets' cry of "fraudulent charges" and "CCV2 leaks".

If only, IF ONLY, we were more like you - then perhaps then we can truly understand the glorious ways of the hackers - whose messages needs no confirmation, and whose motivation & love for us little people is really clear as day. And perhaps then we'll understand that no thievery or crime was done against us - it was all to teach us a lesson! A test! A struggle through life to make us stronger!

in the name of the hacker(s) I pray.

-BS

hmmm.. you two make me feel like a mental giant..read what i bolded 100 times very slowly if you must, and ask yourself if this is even possible in the real world.. though i will say your translation of his headscratching comment is excellent in its sheer simplemindedness.

I'm being sarcastic. What he (params) said is a tautology, I'm highlighting how ridiculous it is.

Yes, this is literally the most important computer hack of this or any other time. No crime has ever shaken the pillars of heaven quite so much.

They may even backtrace it.
