Will the weak 3DS launch even matter in six months?

Sure, the 3DS's launch line up was anemic. But will that even matter in six months? The big news I took away from Nintendo's briefing was the 3DS's killer first party software line up, all releasing before the end of the year: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox, Mario Kart, Luigi's Mansion 2, Super Mario.

Who's going to even remember, or care for that matter, when that software avalanche settles?

Like every handheld ever, it won't matter

Do people honestly believe past handhelds have had better launches with the PSP exception?

Early adopters will remember the horrific trauma they were put through.

That's what they deserve for being early adopters though.

They had no competition at launch, wasting games or going with an aggressive pricing would have been stupid for them.

So many fucking games from Nintendo coming out this year for the 3DS. I'm seriously going to buy atleast 3-4 3DS games that are just Nintendo.

The 3DS will be fine once the games arrive. Just as it always has been with Nintendo portables.

Wii U has an identity crisis, however.

Is Luigi's Mansion really releasing this year? I also remember them saying Kid Icarus would be out by holiday too.

We all knew games were coming. What isn't certain, however, is whether or not 3DS will ever have a competent online structure.

I can't believe people are actually psyched about Oot... It's a remake (and yet...) of a 10+ years old game that already had a remake on the GameCube. Plus, I failed to get hype to the Nintendo franchise again. It's always the same unappealing (to me) characters getting remake or tedious sequels.

I'm way more interested to see what third parties can bring up.

Were there any new 3rd party 3DS games announced this E3? The only thing I can think of right now is Tekken

i didnt even know tekkan was announced for the 3DS. That new Lego game was also announced.

3rd parties have dropped the ball since 3DS was launched. Nintendo now showing how to get things done.

I'm simply waiting on a redesign. Simple as that.
Doing exactly the same thing. None of the games announced today besides Mario Kart excited me and even that looked horrid. Hope the revision will be the same as brick DS to lite.

Well, Iwata and Sakurai had a discussion about Sakurai's next project after KI a few months ago so it should be on final development stages.

I might be wrong, but I think that thei did not say Luigi's Manson 2 is out this year. They did say so for Kid Icarus Uprising

Will buy once the redesign hits with Super Mario.

Predicting we'll see a redesign by summer 2012.

I can wait.

No--not with Vita not being released in America until Spring of 2012.

Didn't Nintendo themselves say they thought they needed time to properly get across the concept of the 3DS to the public? I'd say that an early launch leading up to a packed Christmas lineup is the perfect way to do that.

Handhelds in general were fucking lack luster as a mother fucker at E3 so far at least coverage wise (handhelds have been known to get the coverage shaft even if the games are there).

I also am not that jazzed about the above lineup since OOT and Star Fox are basically remakes, and LM2 does nothing for me. I'm all about Mario Kart like always, but I knew we'd get that eventually. Outside of the regular Mario game I'm extremely meh.

The Vita is no better in this regard outside of exclusive Sony titles like Uncharted and Wipeout.

What sucks to is we KNOW companies are making games for both, but it's like everything handheld wise gets held for TGS for a variety of reasons I won't spill out here. It certainly rubs me the wrong way though.

It will matter as much as the PS2's launch line up mattered.
PS1 and DS also had terrible launch lineups. All we can really say is that launch doesn't seem to ever really determine a platform's longevity or success.

I dont think it will matter -- I personally think the lackluster launch of 3DS is more to blame on the rise of mobile gaming. For most consumers, you can have a smaller device (or bigger if you jump on the Pad movement) that does voice, web, music, eReader, movies, GPS and games at a cheaper price.

As pretty as the Vita looks -- will it be better to spend $40 on Uncharted:Mobile Version or to buy 40 solid $1 games on a mobile device?

So I dont think the 3DS launch or even what games are available in 6-9 months will matter much to the overall success of the Vita or 3DS. I think the bigger impact is the mobile device space, how it has grown in the past 2 years and how it will continue to grow in the next year.

3rd party stuff is still looking really weak. I like Nintendo's stuff as much as the next guy, but a good 3rd party lineup is the lifeblood of any system as far as I'm concerned.

Software avalanche? Only two of the games there are new.

But those two games are oh-so-good, at least.

I just don't know why Luigi's Mansion looks so bad on the 3DS. The lighting is nowhere near as good as it was on GCN, which is what made it so creepy. All the textures and lighting looked very bland and one-dimensional. At least the environments were more varied.

Agreed. I'm tired of Nintendo's continually rehashed IP's, I'd love to see them try something new. I think 3DS will end up just like the DS: slow start that builds incredible momentum.

I realize that the 3DS launched in the US just one month after Japan, but to the US audience, this doesn't matter. The US launch was the US launch.

1) So, in the US, the PS2 launch lineup was SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 3DS. There were some very solid, if unremarkable games present.

2) Great titles started showing up not long after launch starting with Onimusha, ZOE, and Twisted Metal Black. The months following THAT, then, were filled with some of the highest quality games ever made including ICO, Silent Hill 2, GT3, Klonoa 2, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, and more. There is no indication of such a lineup hitting the 3DS within the next 12 months.

That said, the DS also had a very weak start, but it started to introduce new and original software not long after launch. This drought seems more like the PSP, 'cept the PSP had a kickass launch lineup.

Doubt it. Strong lineup at E3 will probably work wonders, since a lot of them are out this year.

They're also going to be enjoying about a year without any real competition, what with Vita on hold in the West until March 2012. Sony done effed up. It's going to be the DS vs. PSP all over again.

I don't get why everyone is so quick to automatically declare that the 3DS will be wildly successful just because Mario, Mario Kart, Star Fox and etc. were announced. It's not a forgone conclusion that once these games release for a system, the system is an automatic hit. Did everyone forget that the N64 and the Gamecube also had all of these games?

I was going to hold out until the inevitable redesign, but then Nintendo found my Achilles heel in Luigi's Mansion 2 which is going to make the wait that much harder... CURSE YOU NINTENDO.

All that I know is that with Super Mario Land, Links Awakening (never played), and OOT (never played more than 30 mins), Super Mario, Super Mario Kart this year, I'm set.

Did you download the trailer on the 3DS? I thought it looked terrible when they showed it, but it looks great on the 3DS (especially with 3D on).

All of the new game demos look spectacular on the 3DS. Any other way to access these vids doesn't come close to doing them justice.

I was under the impression that Vita was going to be released this year. Globally.

As we all were after yesterday's conference.

However, it was confirmed today that they means "fiscal year" and that Japan is the only one with the hope of having it out before Christmas.

If I had the money for one, I'd probably go buy a 3ds today based on the showing of uprising, luigi's mansion, and revelations. One thing tho, I have had literally zero interest in the 3ds up until this point so I know nothing about it. What flaw is it that seems to make so many people want to wait for the redesign?
