Desperate Half-Life fans mail crowbars to Valve, write essays on Hitler

Fun fact: we're just over 5 months away from it being six years since Valve first confirmed the development of Episode Three.
Today's gold announcement was the first official confirmation that a third Half-Life 2 episodic update is in development. Like Episode Two, Valve divulged little in the way of information about Episode Three, saying only that it was the last "in a trilogy...that will conclude by Christmas of 2007."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA

:(

How deep does this rabbit-hole go?

Not fucking deep enough to fill in the crazy mentality that is Half Life fans. I think the best way to describe the journey for all this will be Alice in Wonderland, and Gabe's the rabbit that is late for the party of Half Life 3's release. What a crazy thought.

Valve fans are the worst.

Worst than Lost fans
Worst than Sonics fans
Worst than religious fundamentalists
Maybe even worst than soccer fans

I fundamentally don't get Valve's secrecy here. I mean, even an answer like, "We're putting a greater emphasis on multiplayer games at Valve, we aren't sure how Half-Life fits into that approach, so it'll be a few years before you'll see anything new," while probably causing mass hysteria, would at least provide SOME solace for fans.

The supposed mirrored "3" is created by the coffee stains:

Valve is just fucking with people now.

Because Valve doesn't care about its fans. It's the only explanation, and the source of my continuing (and worsening) disapproval of the company.

I would say Valve cares more about fans than any other company, which is why they just don't want to do sequels for the purpose of spitting out a new game with the same name on it.

The #valvearg2 IRC is back up and running for those interested in that. Good thing this is started right as finals end.

Oh, interesting! Where can I find this channel?

See, the thing is that this is an outright falsehood. If Valve didn't care about its fans we'd have Team Fortress releases for $60 every November with $15 map packs.

I think an Episode 3 that's merely good would be worse than nothing at all.

in all honesty I'm really getting sick of all this crap, just release the game already valve.

What could valve possibly gain from holding off this long, it just dosen't make sense, its almost like there trolling the fuck out of their fans? To completely brush off the franchise that made you who you are just dosen't seem like a smart business decision at all.

I thought valve was all about the community, well, here we are Valve, you know what we want, why not meet us half way at least. How about a couple of screenshots, maybe a 20 second teaser or how about a couple of sound bits...anything? Two concept art photos in the last 4 years just isn't going to cut it anymore.

How do you know it's ready?

Quality, probably.

As I said, releasing nothing at all is better than releasing a merely good Episode 3.

Valve know exactly what they're doing. The instant the release dates for Episode 3 and/or Half-Life 3 are officially announced, everyone will pretty much collectively forget about the huge wait and anticipation will begin as normal.

Gabe has said that they don't work on a game unless the majority of the employees want to. It's frustrating as hell that they haven't wanted to make HL3 yet, but I cant be mad about it. If they don't want to make HL3 yet then they don't want to make it.

"It's been 4 years and counting since Episode Two released and yet there's still no tangible sign of Half-Life 3, therefore the game isn't in active development" has always struck me as specious reasoning. If the game is a full sequel to the degree of Half-Life 2 and runs on the revamped Source engine - both of which I assume to be the case - then its protracted development is perfectly understandable.

As an aside, I wonder if Half-Life 3 will be bundled with the "F-Stop" game that was originally intended to be Portal 2.

Of course a bad episode would be bad, but the point people are presumably making is that instead of saying virtually nothing for 3 years or whatever, they could at least have some announcement and say "We're still planning a new game in the Half-life series so don't give up. However, we want it to meet wutwutwut's standards, so it won't be anytime soon."

Or they could say "We still want to make another Half-life game, but it's been tabled for now since we like multiplayer games. In the future we might do it, but don't hope for anytime soon."

The fact is that they not only don't say these sorts of things, but they literally completely stonewall any fans or interviewers who ask about the series as far as I am aware. That's why it seems to go beyond marketing to just being mean. If it was a one-year ARG ongoing and they didn't want to say anything for that reason then that's one thing, but this is literally multiple years.

I feel that communication with people in general, outside of TF2 blog posts, is one of Valve's biggest weaknesses (in the HL2 case, in Steam support cases, and perhaps sometimes in relation to VAC/Steam accounts being disabled/how certain things work with Steam).

Lombardi mentioned in an interview earlier in the year that "[Valve aren't] done with Gordon Freeman's adventures" and asked for fans to "hang in there with us", so there's that.

I think that statement was merely made to prevent lunatics like me to go to their offices.

I cant wait for episode 3 to disappoint everyone.

The moment I hold Episode 3 in my hands (yes I will buy it boxed because god damnit it's Half Life 3) this game will already have fulfilled all my wishes. I don't even need to play it.
It's pure existance is the end of all things.

That is, until you see his beach house.

Well of course, I didn't expect him living in a shack. Although I must say, for a billionaire, that house is afterall rather "discrete" and tasteful I think. Doesn't come across as some extravagant superfluous "I have 4 helicopter pads"- place. Like I said, a down to earth guy :D.

( see how much I'm kissing your bum Gabe, make my wish come true and visit me in the middle of the night dressed as santa with HL3 codes in your sack )

You don't seem to understand Half Life fans then. You're indicating they have some semblance of autonomous thought when it comes to critiquing parts of the franchise.

Episode 2 was phenomenal, Episode 1 was poor and Half Life 2 was merely good.

This simply isn't true. I consider myself a fan of Half-life 2 and Valve, yet I offer criticisms of some things Valve does (in this very thread for instance), and of Half-life 2 (I have expressed dislike of the vehicle sections).

Surely I'm not the only one who likes the games but also considers them flawed in some places. :P

That article's from March 2003. That's pre-Steam. He probably wasn't a billionaire back then.

I actually think each of Valve's SP games has been better than their last. HL1 < HL2 < Ep1 < Ep2 = Portal < Portal 2. It's as if each game's an experiment and each experiment's better than the last. That's why I expect Ep3 to blow Portal 2 out of the water.

And yes, HL1 is fucking terrible compared to Portal 2, not accounting for age.

When that news story about life as a Valve employee came out recently, didn't they make it clear that no one works on games that they don't feel passionate about? If they haven't finished Episode 3, the reality is that a) it's not what's on their minds right now, and b) it just isn't good enough in its current state to not disappoint people. They also need some way to bundle it for console gamers - I don't think DD only (expansion to Orange Box?) is going to get it as many sales as a disk release.

ironsights
3 weapon limit (including pistol)
regenerating health

That's not funny. Don't joke like that.
