Ridley Scott's Prometheus Trailer

Haven't watched the trailer yet but I agree with your sentiment. The art of framing a shot well and just leaving it there seems lost on a lot of modern directors. Hate it.

To be fair, directors of old would have sold their cornshoots to spiky demons for the abilities of movement we have these days, both in production (steadicam, low weight cinema cams, advanced cranes) and post. I agree that it's a nice change of pace, but any idea that motion camera work is somehow "lesser" is stupid.

Hey these Alien movies sound pretty cool.

Maybe I should watch them.

Never seen Alien or Aliens? Fuckkkkk dude... get on those two asap.

I'm sure when you first saw the Space Jockey in Alien, your first instinct was to guess that this massive biomechanical being was just a big human in a suit.

It just screams of a needless retcon. I would consider myself disappointed, but I knew Scott would fuck this up back when it was first announced as an Alien prequel-hybrid. It's best to let the audience's imagination fill in the blanks, especially when the canonical answers are lame as shit.

yeah i kind of agree.. but ill be glad to have another name besides "space jockey"

still looks awesome though

All hail lord Ridley

This gif alone would have been enough to convince me to go see the movie on day one. The whole trailer is simply glorious. And I'm not gonna watch any other trailers. In fact, I'm not even going to rewatch the current trailer in HD, because I want the movie experience to be completely fresh.

I just want to say I'm o so glad that Ridley Scott went back to the SF genre and made this movie. And I'm sad he's at an age that we can't expect many more movies like this. The guy is a legend.

Shot as an R rated movie and edited as a PG movie.... seems obvious.

this shot is beautiful, just an amazing looking set with an amazing design. Even without theron it would still be a very beautiful shot.

Agreed. The director of photography (or whoever is doing the lighting) already deserves a trophy.

Friend wants to know, will this be in 3D? Personally I don't care.

I may go pick up the Blu Ray Anthology after work. I dunno..GAF tends to overhype crap. I better not be dissapointed! I want to geek out over this trailer too
Just watch 1 and 2, thank me later.

It's so bizarre to me that R even matters. The last time I can remember not being able to go to an R rated movie was Gladiator in 2000 when I was 11 - couldn't find anyone to go with me. I've always had an older sister or parents to go with.

Also, how many kids under 17 would even be interested in Prometheus?

Kingdom of Heaven, Blade Runner, anything else?

For the record there already was a second movie that took place in the Blade Runner universe.

No, I am not kidding.

Dude, Soldier was awesome. Kurt Russell is the best.

You're not likely to get much support for this opinion, but at least I'll back you up on it. Ever since the movie was in the planning stages, I've felt like it was completely superfluous, and despite all Ridley's "purist" intentions, it seems basically like an excuse to get back on some sure footing after a string of disappointing reviews and earnings. I don't doubt it'll look nice - he's always had good visual sense, of course - but that's about as far as my faith in it goes.

Is there a list somewhere of every trailer that has used the Inception horn? Holy crap It's in every god damn trailer now.

This isn't just GAF Hype. These films are classics. Well, the first two definitely are.

I can't see Scott's Director's Cut adding much in. I think storywise we are going to get everything Scott wants. We might lose some blood, gore, and nudity (nude push-ups right?), but the burned feral man is nothing The Dark Knight hasn't done.

Plus I'm holding out hope that the film is a huge success and, in a cynical move to generate more cash, Fox theatrically releases Scott's R-rated cut at the end of the summer.

You're jumping to a lot of conclusions based off of a couple of comments in an interview and a half second shot of someone doing something with something.

I can see where a director's cut might end up containing material that had to be removed to get a PG-13 rating.

The first two Alien movies are good enough to match any amount of hype you can throw at them. On that note, though, Prometheus is doomed to be hilariously overhyped; already in this thread you'd think Ridley Scott was Jesus Christ. I mean he has 4 fantastic films and one or two really good films, but the rest are rather average or bad. I'm not sure if he's 'still got it', although this early Prometheus stuff certainly gives one hope.

I think it was OK. Definitely deserving a higher rating on IMDB than what it has now. But a lot of people don't know it's connected to Blade Runner.

I think it's awesome in the cult, cheesy way - not necessarily that it should have higher ratings. I mean it's pretty rough from 'good film' standpoint.

Robin Hood directors cut is definitely better than the theatrical, though its still not amazing or anything.

K, I'll have to check it out. HATED Robin Hood in theaters.

Is there a list somewhere of every trailer that has used the Inception horn? Holy crap It's in every god damn trailer now.

Well the original Alien trailer from the 70s is what started it, and it's what this Prometheus trailer is referencing.

I'm guessing the Space Jockey is another form of human, their ship has artifacts from different civilizations and what the crew finds is a variant of the 'Xenomorph' strain of alien.

The part in the trailer with the ship flying down with the vapor trail and snowy mountains in the background is obviously a tip of the hat to Cameron on his Pandora drop. Seriously... In Ridley we trust!

So I was reading about Prometheus mythology on wikipedia and ...

In Greek mythology, Prometheus (Greek Προμηθεύς, "forethought")[1] is a Titan, the son of Iapetus and Themis, and brother to Atlas, Epimetheus and Menoetius. He was a champion of mankind, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals.[2] Zeus then punished him for his crime by having him bound to a rock while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day.

This sounds eerily familiar to that leaked script that was supposedly debunked. A few words jump out at me here. Lets play pretend for fun ok?

So Prometheus is the movie title, also the name of the ship in the film .. we know that already. But lets pretend its also a lose easter egg thats been hinting at the plot the entire time? So "Prometheus" isn't a person in the movie, its the crew acting as the role of Prometheus in Greek mythology. Humans were created long ago by the Space Jockeys and we are their children.. they are by definition our gods. The Space Jockeys uncover humanity's wily intelligence, in that we have ventured into space and found them. The crew (Prometheus) steals their fire (bio tech), and the Space Jockey's (Zeus) unleash their Xenomorph (Bird) to punish them.

From here the Prometheus script does what it pleases, and some turn of events allows the wily humans to turn the xenomorph against Space Jockeys and barely escape. We see the Space Jockey ship in the Prometheus trailer, and we see something crash. Prometheus and Alien are tied together via the Space Jockey ship, and loose ties to xenomorph introduced late in the film. Somehow a Space Jockey gets impregnated by a face hugger and after coming to, decides to unleash its wrath on Earth. The movie is taking place at LV426 at this point. The humans are on the planet, the Space Jocket flee's to the ship, takes off.. gets nearly in orbit when the chest burster scene happens. The ship comes crashing back towards to LV426. The humans have survived, they escaped the SJ and its xenomorph pets.

Lastly there are some hints that the chest burster from the Space Jockey is the queen who later lays eggs on the crashed ship for the crew in Alien and colonists in Aliens later find. Her size and intelligence (to use an elevator for example) is explained by her mixed DNA with a Space Jockey. The movie ends with a panned camera angle of the crashed ship, even further out to LV426 and lastly harrowing .. pronounced and familiar beeping a warning beacon earlier activated by one of the humans on the ship. End

That of course leads right into the Nostromo picking up the warning beacon some 50 years later at the beginning on Alien.

Thats my guess.

If the Space Jockey is our creator than that makes for some interesing themes to explore.
We know there is an android in the film. I can't see them missing the opportunity to explore that there are 3 generations there. Obviously the question of what does it mean to be human will be revisited by Scott.

I'm pretty excited about the how the ideas are being approached. The Space Jockey thing could turn out to be really really cool. I'm not going to be cynical about it and think I know better than Ridley Scott, especially when he delivered a trailer as good as that. He has it in him somewhere. Once a master, always a master.

Heres the Ridley Scott timeline:

70s-80s: Awesome
90s: Mostly waste
2000-2005: Awesome
2006-2010: "eh"

Scott has several great films that are pretty underappreciated, like Duellists or Legend

You know how Terminator 1 and 2 are great, and Terminator 3 and 4 are total shit?

Yeah its kinda like that.

Third one is okay. Fourth is just... it's amazing how bad it is. I do recommend watching all four.
