Why is the 3DS on the list...?

I don't think anyone would disagree that the initial launch period was handled about as badly as anyone could manage. That it's made such a dramatic 180 since the price drop shouldn't distract from the fact that there was a big reason why they had to do that in the first place.

I'm surprised Duke Nukem Forever didn't garner more votes. At least more votes than L.A. Noire. L.A. Noire had some problems, but Duke was an abortion.

(Don't know how I missed that voting thread.)

The biggest fail about the PSN outage was the reaction from Sony. Not the actual outage. Edit: also the personal information infringement.

3DS made up for itself before the year ended. I'm sure Vita will do the same this year, this happens to every console launch.

Why is the 3DS on the list...?

The 3DS absolutely deserves to be there. C'mon it literally sucked for a good quarter. It wasn't until OOT3D that I was actually compelled to open my 3DS.

Right now it's an awesome console, but before.. sheesh.

Honorable mention has to be Tiger Woods.

OK the winner of this HAS to be EASports for Tiger woods Pga Tour 12 for the PC.

EA Put it in the same box as the console Version of Tigerwoods PGA Tour 12, listing the same features as the console version of the game.

However its actually the offline version of Tigerwoods online(which is tiger woods 09ish) the free to play browser version of the game.

No other game or publisher stooped so low this year..they are the Champions of the Fail of the Year

Edit: heres link to official GAF thread for those that can't believe this happened in 2011

Followed by Mama Robotnik's campaigning for donating to PS3 hackers. That was fun. Bwahaha

It also didn't happen, but by all means invent a situation if it makes you feel better.

You could consider searching my post history to find evidence that I indeed "campaigned" (you'll find nothing has been edited), or retracting your assertion, but we both know you probably won't do either.

Campaigning was probably too strong a word. But after that thread and then this thread:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=425197

Well, it was pretty damn hilarious. Turned out it wasn't at all what it seemed, but still. That's all I meant. :p

So L.A. Noire made the top 5 because it's a big budget adventure game rather than GTA 1940?

No, because it fails in giving the user any influence over the story, which is kind of what a detective game should do. Instead of having consequences over your actions and accusations, you're locked into the storyline. Despite knowing that the two suspects in front of you couldn't have committed murder, you must choose one of them, because the plot doesn't reveal who the actual murder is until later in the game.

It completely fails as an adventure and detective game. One of the biggest disappointments for 2011.

(1) At no point did I ask anyone to donate anything, not ever. I made a thread about something that was happening, and said what I had done. That was it. "Campaigning" isn't "too strong", its just an untruth,

(2) Yeah the second thread was actually a lie as I'm sure you are aware.

Still, if "probably too strong a word" counts as a retraction of sorts, then thanks,

In fact, even discussing this again - it occurs to me that no one has mentioned Kevin Butler's tweeting of the top-secret PS3 security key. Now that was an incredible fail.

Disappointment I get. Mass Effect is a similar offender with many of its "choices".

But when I think of FAILURE I think of all the objectively broken games released this year. The fact that Mortal Kombat's could not be played online for months was outrageous for a fighting game.

I think everybody was lumping that in the entire PSN fiasco. A prime example of the right hand not being aware of what the left hand was doing.

edit: you know what, I've been a complete tool to you with my post and other posts I've made, and I want to apologize Mama for my behavior. You don't deserve any of that.

I completely forgot about that. That was pretty good.

Fair enough.

So L.A. Noire made the top 5 because it's a big budget adventure game rather than GTA 1940?

The story was bad, some cases were obvious but you were forced to make bad decisions. Nothing you did in the game changed where the story was going.. and the main character was bipolar.

Everything else about the game was mediocre and boring but the worst part was sitting through the story knowing I was making bad decisions. What an awful way to force a story.

Edit:

How did the 3DS and LA Noire get more votes than Duke Nukem Forever? It's easily the shittiest AAA release of the year.

No one fell for DNF hype.. we all knew it was gona be shit. LA Noire though got good reviews and such. It was the one game of this year I regretted buying.

I still say the biggest fail wasn't the hack itself, but the media response to it.

I mean seriously, after all this time what do we actually know about what was taken?

The biggest story in years and all we got was an endless carousel of innuendo and conjecture; Wired made some attempt at actual investigative journalism, by tracking down and speaking with the hackers who's insights formed the basis of the original Ars Technica piece that was recycled endlessly throughout the debacle, but elsewhere...

I think the vast majority of gaffers can agree with this list... hehehehe Not as much controversy as the GOTY.

Are you really surprised? They can't even be bothered to ask Bethesda about Skyrim PS3. If anything the fail of the year should go to gaming journalists.

That's not the media's fault. The entire situation was the result of one Sony mistake after another. We'd get information from Sony that was in direct contradiction from the information they gave us the day before. The fact that Sony waited a week before telling us credit cards may have been stollen is unforgivable regardless of whether or not they actually were stollen.
