Armored Core 5 releases in NA on March 20th

Yikes. That walking animation is pretty awful too.

Edit: I guess we'll find out on the 26th if the retail build is just as bad.

I don't know why it would be better. Getting this on 360 is the only way to go.

So is this game suppose to be a 30 FPS game?

In any case is there any footage of the tutorial level or "practice" mode area(which I think is the same as the tutorial level)? I remember that not being so bad on PS3. There is the hope that maybe that one city stage is the blighttown of this game, lol.

I've played through the demo missions a couple of times (making my team level 7 or 8 or whatever it last was) and here are some thoughts:

Pro:
  • It's Armored Core. Massive hulking machines that are nimble as fuck at times.
  • Graphically some inconsistencies, a lot of shit that the graphics engine tries to throw at you. It does look nice overall, but I kind of miss the spartan open deserts of AC4.
  • Core assembly and parts management is where it's at. This part has not changed a lot.
  • The new scan mode is pretty nice and the aircraft-like course planning too.
Con:
  • Frame rate shoots itself in the foot every time something happens.
  • Input lag?
  • Some models look fugly up close.
  • Very limited animation in some cases.
  • Ten screens of disclaimers.
  • Collision detection is iffy. Reminds me of that last travesty of a game, Front Mission Evolved.
  • Massive auto-aim instead of the lock-on known from previous series.
  • Nearly unreadable GUI. You really need to strain yourself in order to see how many hit points an enemy has left.
I will be getting the game regardless. Even if it sucks and even if I never go online for the fancy new multiplayer shite, I will still customize the hell out of my cores.

Actually I think if this game turns out to be technically weak, it will be the unique multiplayer that saves it.

The frame rate in the video wouldnt have been quite so bad if he was actually playing properly, the static/glitchy screen effect from being shot seems to cause it to slow down more.

So basically get the 360 version or wait for a PC port then. I'm sure they will patch the FPS somewhere down the line but I am still getting the 360 version on day 1.

what a joke.

Absolutely fucking unacceptable that the difference is that great. (And on a subsequent replay of the PS3 demo, it gets absolutely terrible in the later parts of the mission where you're fighting another AC and like 4/5 helicopters onscreen at once) I would pick up the 360 version, but I don't actually have XBLGold.

Hopefully they can get some fix going on for the PS3 version. But when considering that From didn't actually touch Blight Town in Dark Souls...

I really don't want to be port begging since I have both a PS3 and 360 but I really hope that they release a PC port at some point, they just don't seem to be able to get the frame rate right on consoles atm :S

Whoa... what is with that walking animation? I enjoyed my brief time with For Answer, but that is some downright shameful animation and framerate right there.

Guess I'll see how bad the framerate is for myself. Worse than blighttown, though? :/

I dunno what the hell was going on since the demo is completely in Japanese, but:

-Walking animations are terrible, yeah.
-Framerate is all over the place. I'm fine with 25-30FPS but when you get a lot of effects in that multiplayer mission, yeah you can see it nosedive.

Also played a mission online and didn't know what the hell was going on. Seemed kinda Chromehound-ish, but not really. Interesting, but I dunno if I'd stomach it with the framerate.

Christ no. These people are out of their minds. The game is perfectly playable. The thing is, if this game was a fast moving arcade shooter, it would be pretty bad most likely BUT because these are giant lumbering machines that move pretty slowly anyways, the game is very playable regardless of the framerate. I'm going to go try it again now just to see if I notice this time around but I didn't feel it ran slowly before.

The game will be fine but as always, the better the framerate the better. I'd say it runs about par with the normal gameplay in Dark Souls currently.

What? Combat can be pretty fast depending on how you outfit your mech. Or at least it was for me in 4.

This is not 4. The mechs move a lot more slowly. It can still be fast paced but they dialed the mechs back to pre-4 speeds so relative to that game it is much more slowly paced.

So, I tried it again and the framerate still seems fine to me and the game is perfectly playable on the missions on PS3 which apparently has the worst issues. I can't play online so it may be worse or better there, I don't know. The second map the framerate was worse but there is a LOT going on in that map so the games overall framerate issues really depend on how ambitious the levels are as the tutorial is smooth as butter.

There is a noticable dip when you get hit by shots because of the screen effects presumably so if you get hit a lot on a framerate test that is going to seriously juke the results. I never watched that video so I don't know if that was something that caused an issue during that video as someone seemed to imply in a comment earlier.

I still think the game is not broken as far as framerate. It seems solid but not great. How much that bothers you depends on how picky you are. You shouldn't be playing From games if you're picky like that though.

No PC version, no buy. Not that I was expecting a PC version. It's too bad because I really liked the three PS1 games and March 20th is my birthday.

Ahh, ok, I didn't know that. From how it went from 4 to For Answer I thought they would have increased it even more lol.

what a joke.

Well the 360 version performs better but I still would call this great performance. Especially not with graphics like these. I wonder if the performance would be much better if they would disable V-Sync.

I'll take a lower framerate over screen tearing anytime.

So the 360 demo is Japan Gold only right now, will it be Japan Silver in a week? I know the online thing is only for this weekend but will the regular portion of it be available to all? I have a Japanese Silver account and can't make Gold trails on my current box. :(

My only choice right now is the PS3 version, so I'm hoping that the Jp demo is just from an earlier un-optimized build.

Well I played the demo on PS3, and I'm not bothered by the framerate, it was way worse than this in some areas of Blighttown.

Does anyone know if the Japanese voices will be included in the western release? I guess not but I really hope so.
Would like to pick it up in Japanese for the voices but with so much customization I guess English text is going to be more practical in the long run (just to reduce the time spent translating).
Also, what about the servers? Are they worldwide or divided in 2/3 regions?

Without the numbers showing 26fps-Xbox 19fps-PS3, I would not have been able to tell the difference.

All you guys complaining about the walking animation realize you shouldnt be walking right? You press L1 to turn on the boosters

Just to be in the clear, I chucked the PS3 copy of Armored Core for answer into my machine and played from the beginning up to the infamous White Glint fight.

Here are some quick realizations:
  • ACfa controls miles better. Going for the slumbering slow core control is one thing, but having sluggish, unresponsive controls in ACV is not a good solution.
  • The overall aesthetic of the game has taken a definite step backward in ACV. In ACfa you have the retro-looking menus, but the core is rendered beautifully. Not so in ACV.
  • The GUI is about a hundred times better.
  • Walking animations look better. I am not quite sure whether I like the idea of toggling the boosters on and off in ACV yet.
  • Frame rate holds up better. Unless using electricity distortion effect weaponry, then the framerate plunges to nothingness even in ACfa. Or maybe my PS3 is dying.

I'm still getting it on PS3 but it is disappointing that it wasn't the lead SKU.

From Software continues to baffle me this generation.

Very popular game series in Japan is moved to Western console that does not sell well in Japan as the lead platform?

MS must have loaned them Nic Cage's lucky crack pipe. :\

played a bit on my slim(360) yesterday, it can lag horribly at times, what were they thinking ?

anyways the demo should be up, see links above.
(the 360 wouldn't let me copy the demo from devices to devices (so I had to ftp it back to my computer) so I'm not sure how it will run on other retail 360s...)

I think with ac5 being more multiplayer focused my concern lies more with the fact that you can get bested by weapons. I think there was that quote that said in plain English, yeah you'll likely lose to the dude on the field with the best weapon.

Doesn't exactly instill confidence on my part, then again I suppose that's why you want to roll with a team & make sure whom does what.

I'm not seeing the frame rate problems everyone keeps talking about? I've played through the PS3 demo a couple of times (single player only) and it ran fine for me. The game is a little chaotic, but it feels smoother than AC For Answer. I had fun with it, despite not knowing what was going on (it being Japanese and all).

Played some MP matches this weekend, in those matches the framerate was far better than in the story mission. I had a lot of fun! For people calling the game sluggish, are you sure you're understanding how the new controls work? The game has the best controls of any AC game, ever. It's much more friendly to those playing FPS and the boost being controlled by the Square button is a smart move.

I am crossing my fingers and hoping that the retail version has a more stable framerate, but when I was playing online with a buddy, I had very few frame rate problems. Also the interface and the team concept is really great. I hope that the game doesn't crash and burn completely.

Watch the comparison video the problem is there. I don#t know how someone can not notice the frame rate dropping below 20.

Watched the video, I think the problem is he is just walking so you can notice it more. When I play, I have my AC on boosters 90% of the time, don't have time to notice frame rate drops when I'm zipping around blowing stuff up.

Make no mistake, the framerate drops a lot. It does bother me, it's a negative. But I like the rest of the game a lot. I'm still wondering if I'll put up with it. My friend and I had a ton of fun playing co-ops so, I'm trying to give it a chance.

I notve frame drops even more because I am supposed to be quick. Some people must just not be able to notice frame rates like others. To me it was so bad it is a deal breaker. At least on PS3.

The demo looks like a choppy mess on both systems. It's much smoother on 360, but it's always just under 30 fps which results in minor hitching while in motion. The PS3 demo is a mess, though, and absolute mess.

I'm surprised that things turned out this way as I was hoping Dark Souls meant good things for the PS3 (it ran smoother on PS3 than on 360).
