Final Fantasy VII 15th Anniversary

I remember I was listening to the (amazing) album Loveless by My Bloody Valentine a lot just before I started playing the game. Couldn't believe there were so many references to it in the game.

I cried. But it's mostly because Zack is far more likeable than Cloud. I knew it was coming, but I didn't think I'd like Zack that much when I started CC.
I thought Cloud's weaknesses and complexities made him a far more interesting character than Zack, though I like him too. Pitting the two against each other always seems so silly, though I suppose it's inevitable given Zack's influence on Cloud. I thought it was kind of nice back then to have a protagonist who was a little bit jerky and insecure. I couldn't help but root for him throughout the game. And by the end of it, he comes out a pretty stellar guy.

I was... no longer in high school by the time FF7 released in NA. We will just leave it at that.

I was older when I played FF7 than a few people in this thread are now. Urgh. But that's what's so great about this game. It resonated with such a wide range of people.

Tom Hall was lead designer on Anachronox and his main inspiration was Chrono Trigger. John Romero did not work on it.

Yeah, you're right. When I think Ion Storm, John always pops into my head. I'm positive that interview was with Romero though, it stuck out in my mind pretty sharply and had a small picture of cloud and co. fighting in a forest area. He was talking about the "3D CG style" of story-centric games and FFVII being an inspiration for that. But I mean that was back in 96-97... the details are a little hazy. :P

Listen to Interrupted By Fireworks and I challenge you not to smile or feel emotion!

DO IT!

It makes me really sad, because I think about the nest of birds on Mt. Corel and the choice you have to make. Get 10 phoenix downs and destroy the nest, or leave it alone? Thinking that someone would take the phoenix downs makes me sad.

They really are getting progressively shameless, aren't they...

I'd like to believe not. I think it entirely depends on the person in charge of the game (such as you-know-who).

Jiggling aside, Tifa was handled well enough in Dissidia. There's nothing wrong with creating an attractive character or inserting fanservice when the situation is appropriate.

The above gif'd FMV is none of those things. It was a blatant zoomed-in boob fest that marred the tension of the story that was happening earlier.

In fact, much of FFVII inserts inappropriately comedic moments in-between some of its darkest points.

Aerith dies>comical Elena "fight">Snowboarding mini-game

Cloud goes nuts, Sephiroth gets Materia>bouncing CG juggs during FMV

Tifa nearly dies, Weapon is destroying Junon>slap fight

And so on.

Anyway, the more realistic the Remake's graphics are, the less I'll have to worry about how she'll be depicted.

As long as they match this level of visuals, everything will be fine:

Won't stop fanboys from their balloonish fanart, but at least they'll realize SE isn't intentionally shoving the tits in your face.

I didn't.

only because Tifa and Aeris were there, I couldn't do it!

Cloud was a loser who had to steal someone's identity to hide himself from his weak self and serious lack of confidence.

That alone make him several times more interesting that most JRPG protagonits.

This is the one FF of that era that doesn't stand out to me. Also the only one I've never replayed. Just..don't like it much. I think it was having come off of things like Lufia(2 more than 1 for me), FF5/6, and Chrono Trigger that made it feel just like another entry in a long list of triple AAA games rather than something momentous like for those who'd never even played an RPG. It most definitely has memorable moments, but I still get surprised by how many people on gaf scream "greatest game of all time!" and "remake please!" for this game.

Also honestly shocked (well, interested) by how many people were "surprised" at getting out of Midgar and "finding a whole world". For people who've never played an RPG I guess that makes total sense, but for those who had..really? You didn't expect an overworld with airship travel for an FF game by that point in time? Though I wonder how long it took the average player back then to get through Midgar. I don't remember it being very long at all so if that's really all the game was it wouldn't quite be an RPG haha.

I'd never played a console RPG before, much less a Final Fantasy game. So, yes, I was surprised. And the first time I played, I think it took a dozen or so hours before I was out of Midgar (though I tend to waste a lot of time exploring), so I had no reason to believe it wouldn't all take place there.

Agreed.

Uh, have you *seen* turd birthday? Realism won't prevent anything.

It makes me really sad, because I think about the nest of birds on Mt. Corel and the choice you have to make. Get 10 phoenix downs and destroy the nest, or leave it alone? Thinking that someone would take the phoenix downs makes me sad

THIS! It horrified me to imagine someone picking that option. I tried it once to see what would ensue and instantly reset because 'my' Cloud would never do that. :P

As I was doing all the Shinra stuff a storm was building outside, then once I got to that part when Sephiroth steals JENOVA and leaves the blood trail the storm started with really heavy rain and lightning that lit up my entire room. I loved the way the music stayed quite and eerie even during the battles so it didn't drown out the thunder at all.

VII was great.

I did it in my current playthrough ;_;

Never before and never again! ;_;

I liked reading the instruction booklet in this game, especially the character bios. I remember being so intrigued by Sephiroth's description, thinking to myself, "man, this guy must be a BOSS, can't wait till I meet him". Then I finally got to the flashback part of the game and saw Sephiroth deal like 3000+ damage on a giant dragon in a single sword slash, killing him instantly. I was just in awe of his HP/MP and that giant sword and that made me want to get to level 50 ASAP.

The most anticipated epic adventure of that year.
I still remember the day that I watched a trailer of the game in a demo disc and I said "Beautiful"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ-toUi9jDc

Holy Batman!! spoilers!!

I would be pissed if I watched the trailer back then, the only info I had was a 2 page preview on my preferred magazine back there.I kinda miss those times, when you only had a few screens and a few lines of description.

You forget all when you are a child :P

My parents originally bought me a PSX and FFVII when I was 11. They didn't realize that the PSX needed a video card for this game. I ended up playing through the Midgar three times before my parents were able to get me a memory card.

I remember wondering for hours what world map the manual was talking about. There is no map! Stop lying to me stupid manual!

Aeris's theme as the holy materia hits the water. I'll never get that vision out of my head. Such a fantastic game.

I greatly enjoyed playing FF7 when I was a teen, it was my second favorite game at that point too ( first was Terranigma ).

I think the aspect that is still relevant about FF7 is how it was a transition experiment where Square gave it all not knowing well the destination.
The result was a crazy game ( in a good way ), that's why I think a remake would have a bigger chance to ruin the game spirit.

Tom Hall was lead designer on Anachronox and his main inspiration was Chrono Trigger. John Romero did not work on it.
Awesome, awesome game.
Too bad we never got the second part :-\

Never actually owned a copy until the PSN release.

I just borrowed my uncles copy for a few weeks at a time.

took over a year until I got to the end.

Best memory? Like alot of people probably exiting midgar and seeing that was just one small part of a whole world. my 10 year old mind was blown.

sector 7 getting blown and seeing good characters die was crazy as well when all you have played before that was mario and spyro.

Great music as well.

<3 Cosmo canyon.

Aeris's theme as the holy materia hits the water. I'll never get that vision out of my head. Such a fantastic game.

The best music-to-moment match in the game is the main overworld theme climax when
Cloud takes off his soldier mask in the lifestream flashback.

Best game ever. That intro... goddamn, that was the best xmas ever. On my main/first save I am sure I have like 1500 hours on it, I just never somehow grow tired of just running around, slapping things around, going to places and listenin to the tunes, talking to the random crazy people and such.

Edit: Listening to Cid's Theme, that part really rules.

All these jazzy lounge tunes rule too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWu9iQLwrC8&feature=related

I think, like with everyone else, leaving Midgar was the defining moment.

I love Midgar. Such a defined sense of 'place'. I would have been happy with the entire game taking place there. And, actually, I do wish there was more of it. Would have liked to have maybe seen an afluent area of the city, rather than just slums, power plants and office complexes. It basically did Deus Ex Human Revolution's shtick years before!

There was actually a bit of disappointment experienced when I went to other towns and they were nowhere near as well realised as Midgar. Oh well.

Interestingly enough, like most RPGs I played it, got about halfway through then stopped for whatever reason. Except I did this like five times over the years, finally one day knuckling down when I was 18 and forcing through. Such an incredible experience.

When it comes to assessing FFVII, I feel like we've been stuck with the "best RPG ever!"/"terrible FF game!" dichotomy for so long now. The way I see it is as a simply good RPG, executed with immense skill, wit and charm.

It's an interesting transition game. 3D graphics with sprite-work sensibilities in the artstyle. I'm actually amazed that the clashing artstyle from the CG movies doesn't jar as much as it could. For this reason, I don't want a remake. None of the humour, or really even the more subtle elements of the story, would gel really well with the faux-realism style now associated with Final Fantasy VII thanks to the Compilation.

For me it's when
Rufus dies.

Or if you believe Advent Children,

'escapes with his life before the building blew up'

Fighting Jenova right after Aerith's death, while her theme was playing, was probably the saddest moment in gaming for me ;_;

What are your favorite memories of it?

I dont remember atm as there are so many. But I gota confess, there was a time I played in the basement of my cousins house, my lil bro (at the time was like 2 y.o) fell down the stairs and there was.. continuing to play FF7..

it ain't the best memory of FF7, but it'll always be there

For example?

I'm not disagreeing (yet!) but this seems to be a common sentiment and I personally don't understand what moments wouldn't translate well in an updated remake
save for crashing the highwind into WEAPONS repeatedly

I have beaten the game 9 Times, each time logging in 200 hours, don't know why I guess I would try different things all the time.
and I still have the original non-greatest hits disc with all the manuals. and for the longest time I had the Versus books FFVII strategy guide.
I used that thing until it was dust. like others have mentioned stepping out of Midgard for the first was a revelation. but my favorite part was climbing the mountains to the North crater. simply an awesome area, loved icicle inn and Dr. Gast videos and Ilfana's explanation of what Jenova really was. I might even buy a PS1 just to play the game.

I'm actually in the middle of replaying the game. Funny I played and beat this game at least 10 times but every single time i did it, i always used the same party, cloud, barret and red XIII. This time around ive decided to use TIfa and Cid.

Anyway, there were a lot of favorite moments; I loved the satisfaction of of the chocobo breeding. However the first time I saw this, I was pretty stoked.
