Twisted Metal Demo Impressions

Cars handle just as I remembered - love it. Okay, so top shoulder buttons select your weapon, [ ] is gas (double tap for turbo), X and O are brakes?, /\ is ?, Rtrigger is fire, Ltrigger is ?.. I can't find a button display, obviously..
What am I missing and how do I reverse??

double tap O to reverse.

this game is fucking awesome. you already had my $60 jaffe, but this just solidifies it!

i hope the game sells well enough to warrant multiple sequels. they just don't make games like this anymore.

there isn't anything revolutionary about the game but it seems like it will be the game that the twisted metal guys always wanted to make but were a victim of the technology at the time. this game was made for some sweet online deathmatch.

controls are top notch and the graphics are smooth. can't wait for valentines day when i can tell my gf to go eat a bag of dicks cause i'm playing twisted metal biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch!

Ok, I beat the SP a few times. Yeah, you just have to get used to the controls, what each items does and how it works, and where the health pickups are.

I played it a little. Couldn't connect to a game online but I played around in SP for a while. I suck at this even more than I thought I would. I'm usually pretty terrible with driving in games and this is no exception. It was still pretty fun though. It felt old school but not dated. I was also really impressed with the graphics. Excellent motion blur and everything was pretty crisp. Nice destruction too. Looking forward to trying out the online tomorrow. Hopefully things will be sorted out by then. Right now it went from something I wasn't interested in at all to something I'm definitely considering picking up at some point.

I hate how people are coming here to flame it. If you don't like the game at least try and state why in a conducive manner. If there are specific aspects to the game you find unappealing then talk about them with a little bit more perspective. Tell us why you think something sucks instead of "I just think it sucks" then maybe we can have some form of conversation about the validity of your points.

I was really hoping the classic control schemes (Run'n Gun was my preference) would have been in this game.

Not digging the mandatory waggle controls. Even if it is just for one input - not a fan.

Does the ai ever actually kill another ai? In the games I've won, I had to pick everyone off.

I think every Twisted Metal has been like this, they are all essentially after you, and barely attack each other. That was one thing I loved about Vigilante 8, the AI enemies would legitimately attack and sometimes kill each other.

They actually can't damage each other. I was talon and I used the magnet to carry one of the AI cars, the other cars were still shooting at me but they were hitting the car I was carrying and it was doing no damage. Either the car took damage but it wasn't enough for me to notice or the AI seriously can't hurt each other.

What type of connections do you guys have? Im always hearing how PSN is slow. The demo downloaded in 10 minutes for me.

It's not my connection.. I download extremely fast off my PC, Iphone and Xbox 360.. PSN servers have always been shit for me though

Kinda crazy to think we're not even a month into 2012 and we already have a contender for Game of the Year.

That's more than "kinda" crazy. You're saying a demo with lots of issues makes Twisted a GOTY contender? You did say "not even a month into 2012," so you're not even talking about your expectations for the full release technically, though I'm sure that's not what you meant. I'm just being nit-picky cuz... damn, you crazy.

How much would you like to bet Twisted Metal doesn't land in GAF's top five of 2012 come next January?

Note: I think I will like this game. But I don't think it will many, if any, GOTYs.

What control scheme are you guys using? I kind of feel the default scheme is ass. Like why the fuck do I have to double tap O to reverse? Shouldn't O be break - and then naturally when you lose enough speed, the breaking then becomes a reverse?

How are the other ones?

Games still fun, but I'm not digging the contorls.

I think people are having trouble adjusting to a game with more than 2 weapons and no regenerating health. A game where you have to pick your weapons up from the world and truly learn the maps. A game with complex and tight controls focused on gameplay first and realism second.

Finally got into my first game but we need 6 for the thing to start and theres only 2 of us... been like it for 5min now.

Twisted Metal 2 was not as obnoxious as this and Black.

Makes sense as Jaffe is a MK fan and that series has consistently been about crap AI. :p

I may give the third controller option a try, but still pissed by waggle in Dual Stick / Classic control schemes. Really turned off by the lack of Run'n Gun controls which I've used in every TM game. It would be like a Street Fighter game with four attack buttons or something. :\

Got into my first game! Really fun, need to get used to the controls though. Game just crashed though. :\

The game is a lot of fun, though I'm still getting used to the controls. I think I prefer the racing set up. I just wish there were a button for rear view rather than two different ways to reverse.

the reverse thing is fucking annoying. let me hold down the left stick to reverse, double tapping is unnecessary and gets me killed because im holding O instead of DT. it's really the only complaint i have with the controls

In other words. People still want their parents to hold their hands while crossing the street.

Little tip that I just figured out myself- The 3 d-pad weapons (freeze, mine, and shield) work off the little blue mana bar below their on-screen icons. The freeze needs an almost full bar, the shield needs half a bar, and the mines only take about 1/6 bar each. I was getting confused because every time I hit right to use shield the freeze icon disappeared and I thought the game wasn't reading my controller inputs correctly.

edit: nice, first match with meat wagon and I won, it's got a great special.

Ummmm, you can hold down the stick to reverse.

Did you play the training?

People, play the fucking training. Shit.

So do I have to set up a US PSN account to get this? I don't think I've played a car combat game since Vigilante 8.

Anyone outside of america got into a game? if so how was the lag??

I got a couple games in before the matchmaking thing popped up. Playing from Finland and didn't notice that much lag, bit of warping when cars were flipping over and piling up but other than that it was perfectly playable.

Got a chance to play single player for about an hour. Was having issues with connecting like everyone else it seems. I DID get in one game and manage to kill a guy, but got quickly disconnected.

As for the single-player...

I jumped right into Crimson Fury as my old favorite was Spectre, who was always one of the fast, light-armored vehicles. (nothing was better than flying by people, spinning around, launching a power missile into their sides) Holy shit can you move in that car. The best part is, once you get a handle on the speed, you can often fly in after someone, shoot them a few times, do a quick 180, shoot them a few more times, and turbo out. But fuck, the car is soooo weak. One round I got killed within 30 seconds of the match starting because I went balls deep into the action. This car is certainly all about hit-and-run tactics. DO NOT PLAY CRIMSON FURY IF ITS YOUR FIRST TIME PLAYING TWISTED METAL.

So I switched to Death Warrant (who is very much like Roadkill) and blew through all six opponents on my first attempt. The little extra armor combined with a good deal of mobility was perfect. This also plays into his special extremely well as its easy to maneuver behind someone and stay there while your special unloads on them. Death Warrant feels like the 'all-around' vehicle in the game.

Tried Vermin out after that. I normally HATE when you have the ability to control a missile, but it works really well here, mostly due to the large hit-box as far as locking on goes. This vehicle is a step up from Death Warrant in terms of armor, and a step down for speed. I was genuinely surprised by how much more of a beating this thing could take. Unlike previous TM games, I felt like this is the first time where I could really stay in the heat of the battle for an extended period of time - which is a huge relief as previous titles felt like you spend the majority of your time doing hit-and-runs. My only complaint here was on the secondary fire, it takes a little too long to come out of that camera - I understand you have to take that penalty into account for the extra potential damage, but it still seems a little long.

Couple of tips for those struggling:

-If you're new to TM, play Death Warrant or Vermin.
-Don't forget to actually use alt specials to your advantage.
-If you get into one of those circle fights where you're both driving past each other, then spinning around... turbo into the guy while launching your arsenal on them AND use your machine guns - the combination damage of all 3 can be huge.
-Turbo often. Very often. Its good if you're running out.
-Use your dpad abilities, dropping mines is extremely useful against AI as they like to stay directly behind you.
-HIT DOWN ON THE DPAD. LAUNCHES YOUR SELECTED WEAPON OUT YOUR ASS - more useful than you can imagine.
-Master the 180 and fire. If you can beat your opponent to turning around and start firing first, you can do a lot of damage and throw them off.
-Don't forget R1+L1 makes your car jump. Can get you out of sticky situations, launch you OVER an incoming enemy/missile that is about to ram you, or get you to places you wouldn't expect. (for instances the mansion pool... turbo out of it and jump and you'll land on the second floor)
-X (handbrake) is your best friend. If you've come to a stop, it still works to some degree. USE IT ALL THE TIME.

As for Jaffe, man this is too great. I feel like these last few years we haven't gotten enough GAME games. TM is ALL game. Its all gameplay and style and just FEELS like fun. I've caught about every word you've mentioned about this game since the E3 reveal, and have enjoyed all your talk about gameplay, balance, destruction, and just the nature of the game. I simply can't wait to get this game on the 14th. SOOOOO good. And its so good to be back in the TM universe. Much <3.

PS: I miss Spectre. :(

Oh goodness, how I love it! After eight tries or so, finally beat the computer with Death Warrant! It feels amazing- loved memorizing health pickups while frantically scrambling to stay alive. Old school controls FTW!

I love the fast pace destruction so far in this game. Still getting use to the "race style" controls but it feels good man. Though, I'm not liking too much with Nuke mode but I guess I gotta keep on trucking with this game!

Where/what is the health packs in this game?

one of the best things to do with Chrimson Fury is to freeze use flame thrower then jet off. I killed a darkside easily using this.

nice job mis-reading both posts. you hold the right stick to reverse, not the left. and second, he's saying if O is break, shouldn't holding O put you in reverse instead of having to double tap

Feels like I've started gaming the AI. Run when there's one than one around, hoard weapons/health, spam a lot of dmg, and get out and hoard up. Liking MP more, everyone's a target.

Little blue squares with white +'s on them on your radar. The stadium, church, grocery store, cinema, and the mansion pool all have one. Also there is a chance when you kill someone, the driver will run around screaming on fire... can give you health and various other upgrades upon running him over.

I'm using default myself. Also you can use the right stick to reverse in default.

Ok and now I've gotten a good 5 hours in now give or take about 30 mins of not being able to connect and I can't stop. Without a doubt this game is a blast. I actually ran into a few with mics and it seems on par voice chat wise with other games on PSN.

I do agree that the only thing I don't like is that ram is waggle. makes my damn wrists sore after awhile. The only other thing I hav eto say is that I so can not use the fast vehicles. They really are so hard to control well. I'll stick to my medium speed, medium armor vehicles. Those are the ones I do best with. Take my last 3 games. Came in 1st, 2nd, and then with just 3 seconds to go I tied the leader in the third by freezing Talon and ramming him resulting in a tie.

Now with that I'm so actually getting off the game now. I mean it this time. 5 damn hours straight tonight. That's not including the time I played between the time it came out and 5pm. lol

It totally can be a offensive. I kicked ass with it in single player. I use the magnetic catch and drop the smaller faster cars and i use the amazing machine gun for the bigger cars.
