Might be good idea to keep PSN as "sub-brands" on only Playstation devices. My mate was so pissed after he bought Window Phone because of integrates with Xbox Live that confused him, thought can play all the XBLA on phone.

No, no subbranding. Unique network across all Sony devices. Anything less than that sucks.

Looks like Sony is finally awakening from hibernation. Too bad it took 2 billion dollars in losses for them to hear the alarm.

I kinda like SEN more than PSN.

That's a point, I bet Sony don't want to use PSN system on their phone/other devices hence they will use SEN network for these.

PSN more likely to stay but can be use alternate login for SEN.

I think if they play this right it could be to their benefit, but it's sony. I always thought the blackberry playbook had a weird name if it was a general purpose tablet. I like the Playstation name, and it has a lot of meaning behind it, but maybe some folks consider it just for gaming because of the name. They are probably just trying to get more and more people on it as a general entertainment device, with so many people already using consoles for netflix and stuff.

I doubt it would mean they stray away from games or anything though, since it's still their main industry and source of income in this situation.

Knowing Sony though, even if they had a good idea, the execution will be terrible.

It's a little unclear, but I'm not totally sure they're actually ditching the PSN branding altogether, vs ditching the label as it is/was attached to your account. Or, at least, I'm not sure the service itself is going to be renamed SEN.

For example, there already are, and will continue to be, 'sub-brands' for different areas - Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited - and I would guess PSN will also remain as a sub-brand there. Just instead of using a PSN account across these, you'll use a SEN account to log into any of these. Which makes more sense...

A part of me thinks that to be consistent they ought to rebrand PSN as 'Playstation Unlimited' though :p

edit - errrgh, yeah, the Playstation Unlimited suggestion's already been made ^^ Point is that whether it's called PSN or Playstation Unlimited or what, I think the service portion will retain discrete branding, as Music and Video Unlimited are. It's just the common account that's being renamed.

Playstation Unlimited sounds long. I prefer Games Unlimited, easier for general public and other 3rd party devices to accept.

Sony Entertainment Network is long too. I prefer Sony Home account as opposed to SEN account or Sony Entertainment Network account.

But SEN seems ok too.

It's pretty obvious that this will be integrated into their smart tv's and other electronics. It's just the way things are evolving. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point sony start shipping tv's with integrated playstations. With how cheap wifi is these days to implement in devices at some point in the near future all our devices will be connected with each other.

Actually I'm kind of scared of this. What's to stop TV's getting powerful enough to provide casual games or an onlive like service in the future and so making consoles obsolete? Considering Samsung has already shown us that their next smart tvs will be upgradeable.

I love the SEN Logo.

I hope this allows us to play PSN stuff we purchased on PS3 on Xperia Play phones, because not being able to do that really turned me off wanting one of those.

Nah, Sony have to capitalise on the PS brand, dropping that for "Games" would be a terrible idea. For so many parts of the world, PlayStation means gaming, much like searching on the internet is Googling. They need to make PlayStation more prominent if anything. PlayStation Unlimited, with the PSU abbreviation would work well I think.

Brand's aren't always eternal, Sony went from leading 2 gens to trailing in last this gen. I'm not sure if brand alone can save them anymore. I'm not against change, I think going for a general name like this is good.

Yes, perhaps PSU (formerly PS Suite) can be VU + MU + GU + other PS Suite apps.

SEN would stay as Sony's unified online destinations. You can visit SEN from any web browser. And you can sign in to Steam, Origins, SOE, UltraViolet via SEN's single sign on.

I would love it if RemotePlay, chat and other community services become part of SEN. That means they interoperate with third parties. If not, lump them under PSU.

If they do it that way, they can reserve PSU for a cleanly integrated environment, while using SEN as an all-inclusive bundle. Since SEN needs to run on all sorts of devices, I'm less optimistic about a clean and consistent environment.

so this will probably mean that the network (services) platform SEN will be used on all multimedia and mobile devices (as a goal). Great way to go as it will add lots of value and incentive to use both their services and hardware.

But what will this mean for the user (account holder)?

Their current limitation of two devices per account on PSN will not be applicable on platforms such as TV or music streaming devices if they want to offer a good user experience (generally many households use more than two of each of these devices).
The limitation of only three devices allowed using offline spotify content is already causing Spotify some major problems.

Also, I guess this might mean we will see some simpler game content on their top of the line tv-sets. Minis, maybe PsOne or simpler PSN-games even.

PSN supports more than 2 concurrent devices. It's 2 PS3s and 2 PSPs. They should be able to add other devices. But yeah if they unify the services using 2 entities like what I mentioned above, they may be able to handle conflicts in existing restrictions vs marketing.

I was never really attached to PSN, but dislike this a little for cutting out the Playstation brand. Otherwise I really think this sounds better.

If they want to sell other content (services) than games it is necessary to adopt a wider known brand name. Sony as a brand is well known (since the Walkman) for quality across all media platforms.
Being able to sell a TV, stereo or phone with Sony Entertainment Network access is much easier than trying to sell it with PlayStation Network access since it is not easy to know or gather what PSN access mean (for the common user) on that device.

PS4 to be named Sony Entertainment System confirmed

Is anyone finding it just a bit funny that the Nintendo Network, Playstation Network confusion pretty much fixed itself here?

Are you guys sure this is going down the way you think?

PSN will still be called PSN. For example game cases will still have the PSN title. It's just that PSN now falls under the SEN umbrella.

yes, I was meaning two devices of one product type per account. Limiting SEN account to just two televisions is not a good idea, but implementing it in a way that hinders "sharing" might be tricky. IP-restriction maybe so that the devices has to be attached to the same router.

Which means this change is pretty much pointless.

The change is there basically because they don't want to tell people to sign into their super expensive TVs with a Playstation Network ID. There are, believe it or not, market segments where video gaming has a negative connotation, and some of Sony's devices reach into there. On the other hand, they want a unified login. Solution? Call the login something else while keeping PSN and whatever they're calling the other stuff (Unlimiteds?).

Yap what I pointed out is more for PS Suite devices + Playstation hardware themselves. SEN is more an umbrella beast that cover all devices including non PS Suite ones.

I'm always astonished at the crazy ideas people have about brands around here. Sony are obviously not going to drop PlayStation, any more than they're going to stop being called Sony tomorrow as part of their new rebuilding effort. However bad the situation with PS3 was for their brand, it's not anywhere close to bad enough to actually distance their future products from their almost-20-year history in the gaming sphere.

This SEN thing is just an attempt to unify services across different devices, the same way that Microsoft has made "Live" a cross-platform universal service. Of course, the problem here is that service unification is really difficult unless you're a company like Apple or Google that has a strong fundamental skill at it; Microsoft's made Xbox Live a great product offering but basically all their "Live integration" elsewhere is awful and obnoxious. Sony's got a huge hill to climb here if they're going to try to do the same thing. (And honestly, I think cleaning house with some of their crappy services and rebuilding them individually first is probably the right approach to take here.)
