Los Angeles |OT| GAF's Guide to the Greatest City in the Universe

Anyone here use Thrillist? I browse but I don't really to any of the events but that is mainly because my friends don't want to go.

Never heard of it. It looks like a groupon/living social competitor. I've stopped using both of those because of the spam with junk I don't want. I've found the discounts are often for places that are subpar and not worth going to.

Nice work Mamba.

So. Registration for the Hollywood Fringe Festival went live today. I thought I was serious about doing it, now I'm not so sure with my possible Seattle work trip coming up.

I once asked if any of you were Theater People. Are any of you directors, ASMs, etc.?

Anyone been to World 8 on Vermont? It's a local videogame store. My friend and I are going to check it out tomorrow and trade some older games in and he wants to pick up a classic pro controller.

Nice thread title. I wonder how the Greatest city in the world thread feels about it.

Muahaha.

Oh, I tried In-n-Out fries animal style this past weekend. I can't say it made them any better. I still think there are better fries to be found. Asking them well cooked was a plus though. My primary complaint previously was that they didn't taste cooked enough.

Who cares what those peasants think.

Any of you guys been to Pins and Needles in Echo Park? Apparently they have like 30 classic pinball machines. It's a BYOB place but it sounds neat.

Since I consider myself a ramen aficionado here is my top 5:

1. Tsujita LA - best ramen, best tsukemen, best everything trust me.
2. Ramen Yamadaya - I've only tried the Costa Mesa location but it's bomb and the original Torrance one should be too.
3. Ramen Jinya - locations in Studio City and soon in West LA on Sawtelle by the 405. (chicken ramen is amazing but they got fatty rich pork tonkotsu style too)
4. Fujin Ramen - best option in the San Gabriel Valley, made by a master chef
5. Asa Ramen - in Torrance, amazing roasted pork bone flavor but only open at night so that sucks

Honorable mention: Foo Foo Tei, amazing variety and they do it all an do it great but they lack focus on one ramen to make it spectacular.

Now its time for Hater-ade: Daikokuya is pretty shitty nowadays so just avoid please, not worth the wait at the Little Tokyo location it's all hype. Trust me.

LA Gaf! Help me out. I'm trying to plan out a little Valentines day thing and so far I've decided that I'd like to get Chinese food from somewhere (probably in Chinatown) and then take it to the Huntington Library and have a little picnic in their chinese garden. I was wondering what to follow that up with to end the night. A friend suggested going to a comedy show. I thought it sounded like a decent idea and would probably be a little more enjoyable than the typical going to a movie thing, but I would love if any of my fellow LA gaffers who have lived here longer could try to give me some other ideas of things to do in the area. :)

What are your recommendations for good Mexican food? I've yet to find a place that is delicious and not just trendy.

I tried that place a few days ago. We didn't know that we had to order by phone first so we spent an hour waiting in the car for the drop off.

:O

I live about 4 blocks from that place. I can't believe I've never seen it before. I'll have to try it out soon!

Have you tried Wat Dong Moon Lek Noodle in Silver Lake? I've been there once and the pho I had was so tasty. I had Thom Kha soup with udon noodles, spiciness 7/10. So good!

Nah I don't go out of my way for Thai/pho only ramen.

No Santouka? For shame!

Good selection there though.

I've tried both Santouka in Costa Mesa and Santa Monica and both while good seem to miss something. They are textbook examples of ramen but have no character IMO if that makes any sense, no uniqueness among the top ramen joints but that's just my opinion.

You can't, and nobody walks in LA. San Fran is a city where you can.

I walked 10 miles last week, from sunset fairfax down to 1st and la brea, and back up to hollywood and vermont, then subway to hollywood and highland to walk the last mile back home.

It was a 4 and a half hour venture, but i discovered so many restaurants I want to try now along the route.

Loteria Grill on hollywood is good, although a bit trendy. I love El Compadre on Sunset between La Brea and Fairfax, soo good, they have Flaming Margaritas

Anyone up for the LA Art Walk while Evilore is still here...if he's still here on Thursday and he's willing to go. I asked in the Feb 4th thread but I only got a tentative yes from a few folks.
