Japan's Edo Period was drawing to a close.

iq983sr0Uezd7.png

The shogunate, who'd held power in the country for more than 200 years, found itself challenged by the imperial court, and by several domains who had chaffed under shogunal rule.

In this midst of this political unrest, an organization rose to prominence: The Shinsengumi. Originally formed to protect the streets of Kyoto from masterless samurai, they came to represent the last, tragic bastion of the honor-bound samurai culture that had defined much of Japan's history.

A young woman by the name of Chizuru comes to Kyoto in search of her missing father, and soon encounters danger and the Shinsengumi in quick succession. When it becomes clear the Shinsengumi are also searching for her father, Chizuru is put under their protection.

But odd things are afoot in Kyoto—possibly even supernatural things. Can Chizuru navigate this maze of mortal danger and political intrigue? Amidst so much misery and death, can she find romance?

The 'otome' is a bit of an odd duck to US audiences, even in the already niche genre of the visual novel.

ysRWe.jpg

Rather than play as a male character with an array of women to win over, otome games star a female protagonist out to win the heart of a male character.

Some noteworthy examples include Tokimeki Memorial(Girls' Side), Princess Debut(technically), and Hatoful Boyfriend(sorry).

Aksys are taking a heck of a gamble in bringing this title to the US, so here's hoping it pays off. (If only for the benefit of the ladies.)

Chizuru Yukimura
(The Protagonist)

chizuruyukimura.jpg

After coming to Kyoto in search of her absent father, Chizuru stumbled onto one of the Shinsengumi's secrets, and was consequently taken under their "protection."
Once Chizuru's search for her father resumes, she begins to uncover secrets long buried. Secrets about her father, the Shinsengumi...and Chizuru herself.

Hijikata Toshizo
(The Commander)

toshizohijikata.jpg

The men tend to call him the "The Demon," and not always behind his back.
To maintain order and unity among his ragtag group of warriors, he is very strict and deals out harsh punishments in accordance with The Code.
Very few know his true nature or guess at his internal strife.

Okita Souji
(The Captain)

soujiokita.jpg

Okita is considering to be something of a genius with the sword.
He like to make jokes—frequently at the expense of his comrades—and often wears a wry smile, but in battle he holds nothing back and his devotion to the Shinsengumi and Kondou is unparalleled.

Harada Sanosuke
(No, not that Sanosuke.)

sanosukeharada.jpg

Harada has something of a quick temper, and he's a little rough around the edges, but underneath it all he's a compassionate man with a strong sense of duty.
His weapon of choice is the spear, not the sword, and he has no equal among Kyoto's spearmen.

Toudou Seisuke
(The Upstart)

heisuketoudou.jpg

A cheerful man from Edo, Toudou is the youngest captain in the Shinsengumi.
He's quick with a grin and tends to jump straight into things before thinking them through, even if what he's jumping into is a life–or–death battle.

Saito Hajime
(The Wolf)

hajimesaito.jpg

Saito is know for being reserved, solitary, and loyal.
Unlike most other swordsman, he fights with his left hand. He is a master of the art of iai, and his swordsmanship is top–tier even among the Shinsengumi.

Kazama Chikage
(The Mystery)

chikagekazama.jpg

A mysterious warrior hired by the Satsuma Domain.
He seems to have a special interest in Chizuru Yukimura.

Release Date:
February 14th!
(Not like there's anything else of note happening on that day, is there?)

I doubt you'll see a huge influx of reviews for this game, but I'll add a section if it proves necessary. (And of course, mad props to Vally for the banners!)

Great OP. :D

Dibs on Okita~. Localized otome games are a rarity, so I'm super-glad this is coming over here. One of my friends said she really liked it, so I'm looking forward to it.

Guys should feel welcome to play the game too. It isn't all about romance, apparently.

Anyone can enjoy it. It's got a little girl-on-boy romance in it, if that's your thing, but it's also got hot guys, history (sort of), swords, samurai, and supernatural stuff. Fun for the whole family! Unless they are under 18, because it's rated M.

Heck, I'm buying it. (Though I'm into shoujo fiction, so color me an odd exception.)

Soooo this is supposed to be for girls right?

I think the reviews can probably explain that much more thoroughly, but quick answer:

It subtly leans towards the girl demographic, but is it for girls only? No. It appeals to both genders :)

Since people tend to get the wrong idea about visual novels, there's no nudity or sex in this, right? Since it's on the PSP and from Japan, it kinda has to be clean, but since I haven't played it I can't know for absolute certain.

Right, there's
no nudity, but there is some innuendo and implied acts thereof, but they're few and far between :)

There is no nudity or graphic sex. Lovin' is alluded to in some text, but never shown.

I've got a preorder on the SE (put in before the contents were known - just wanna say thanks for not making it something I would have to hide in a secret area in the back of my closet, btw). I need to support anyone localizing visual novels or otome games - such a ballsy move.

That image of Toudou in the OT is scaring me. Psycho-face!

As for Hatoful Boyfriend, that demo is traumatizing in all the best ways. The stuff of legend.

I will probably get this game. As a fan of classic samurai movies, I really like the look of the setting. And 999 was my first ever VN, and I loved it. Add those two together, and I will probably enjoy this game. Now to decide between LE or SE. How is the game's soundtrack?

Exists in a perpetual state of Quantum Crotch Uncertainty.
I find myself in the unpleasant position of deciding whether my attraction to the novelty of owning a portable dating sim for girls overrides my aversion to Idea Factory.

This is not a dilemma I find myself well-equipped to navigate.

I'm right there with you, believe me. I have a kneejerk hatred for all things IF.

I'm breaking my self-imposed exile for this game.

I have a feeling I won't be disappointed.

(The general consensus is that they can at least manage a game with good writing and artwork, so they're best suited to visual novels.)

Also, the art style for this game is infinitely better than their usual.

Yeah, the pricing for Hakuoki is:

Limited Edition: $39.99

Standard Edition: $29.99

PSN Version: $24.99

Hope that helps! :)

I don't think you have to worry about grindy, needlessly complicated battle systems, so it's down to artwork and writing. The artwork at least is on display, and if the writing was typical of Idea Factory's SRPGs I don't think Aksys would've bothered localizing it. :)

Dibs on Okita~.

Sorry, but I already called him! And I did so directly to an Aksys rep about a week and a half ago, so it's official and everything.

He's so dreamy! <3 (And as I'm playing the game now, he in fact ended up being the guy I would have gone for anyhow.)

Noooo. (Oh, so envious that you're playing the game now.)

I would go for Saito since he's a fellow lefty, but I really wanted Okita. :3

My interest in actually playing the game is fairly marginal relative to my interest in placing it on a shelf to serve as a perpetual reminder that it, in fact, exists. My reticence at it being made by Idea Factory is less a product of distaste for the sort of gameplay mechanics they commonly utilize and more borne out of a fear of its acquisition putting me into a sort of karmic deficit. It is not a practical concern, it is a spiritual one.

Granted, I have thus far been spared any sort of meaningful cosmic retribution for purchasing Chaos Wars and Spectral Force, but I hardly feel that should be taken as carte blanche to tempt fate.

Ah, a collector. Man, if anything this would help absolve you of your Chaos Wars purchase. Hakuoki is the kind of localization that needs to exist and continue.

What concerns me is that Canadians might have to wait an extra week to get it. D:

Not too bad since I'll be picking up my Vita during reading week anyway, but I'm really interested in this and I want to play it ASAP, lol.

There's always the option of grabbing it off of PSN, if you want to play it the day of :3

Glad to see an OT for this! I'm very much looking forward to this game. I can already see my boyfriend being super annoyed at yet another game that takes my attention away from him. hehe

Are the 6 guys in the OP the only ones I can get with? If so, I guess Okita's the only one that really grabs my attention.

Will buy as soon as I can :)
