I dunno if it's been discussed or not, but Soul Calibur V's poor numbers probably have to do with the following factors:

1) Not adding anything to the series that wasn't achieved in IV

2) offering less content than the previous game

3) Gamers in general not really giving a shit about buying a new entry into a series within the same generation that doesn't offer anything substantially different (see UMvC3 numbers compared to the original)

And I think #3 is the main point. It was too early for a new Soul Calibur and the game shows it.

Is it becoming a regular thing for Western games to break the top 10 in Japan.

I mean out of all games, Dragon Age 2???

It had a demo on PSN which I thought was pretty good. As someone who doesn't play Western RPGs it reminded me of The Last Story. Which in terms of presentation reminded me of Western cinematic action games, which I do play. Western cinematic games in turn remind me of earlier Japanese cinematic games like FF and Devil May Cry.

So basically the appeal should be there for Japanese fans of story driven fantasy games. It's only 20 000 too, TLS did much more on a less capable system. Tactics Ogre on SNES did way more.

So it's not that surprising I think. Still leagues below similar Japanese games.

Western 3DS seems to be Nintendo doubling down on what made previous Nintendo handhelds successful, plus the odd big JP 3rd party game here and there (like RE). I see Nintendo putting a lot more into attracting western development on Wii U than they have 3DS.

Well, I still expect Nintendo to nab a few key JP exclusives (which will also be easier than nabbing them elsewhere), but 3rd party parity definitely matters in every region. I'm pretty sure Nintendo will do everything possible to ensure they don't have another Wii 3rd party wise, and Japan will probably be the simplest region for them to accomplish that.

I agree with you on 3ds-wiiu western approach. look at E3 and everything seems clear for the moment.

about 3rd party in general I think that it will still be the major challenge for Nintendo for the Wiiu.

What makes you say this? I mean, I don't disagree with your point about third parties but I think Nintendo has already shown a willingness to do this, how well they succeeded probably will be discovered at E3.

What are you basing this on as well? Certainly not this generation if you look at LTD sales.

THIS is true at least historically.

I agree about the willingness, but we will have to double check if after the will ther will be the capability to reach the target they are aiming for.
About graphic importance on home over portable, mine was more a "developer" point of view rather than a consumer point of view (but of course the developers lead consumers and viceversa): home are more importante in the west over the portables, and portables are more importante in japan over the home consoles: western developers are more focused on home titles and japanese developers are more focused on portable games over home products; last but not least: western developers are really focused on the graphics more than the Jap softco. The relations between these three different elements are very complex but also strong, so I was speaking about the graphic importance on home console for those reasons.

:)

Soul Calibur III kind of had the same issues.

And your list lacks Wonderswan.
(SwanColor and SwanCrystal were released during the PS2)

As a casual Soul Calibur fan, I'm really annoyed with the dearth of SP content in SCV. Soul Calibur was a fighting game series that tended to go above and beyond in that department (Weapon Master, Chronicles of the Sword, etc), but since SCV is really blah in this regard.

There's also PSP3000 MHB or "Hunters PSP" (added grips, improved nub/dpad), which was Japan only. And the GBA SP 101 too (backlit instead of frontlit).

If he's doing worldwide there's also the PSP E1000 (cheaper plastic, drops WiFi, mono speaker).

Revelations soldout the first shipment, now, looking at sell-through % of last week.
Wait for the second one, I guess.
It's continuing to "triple" Mercenaries numbers, so I think it could end around 300K LTD in the next months.

How much were people expecting of RE:R? I predicted 60k first week, so I was apparently way off, but I see folks saying it being at 200k on its second week, and if it hits 300k it would be disappointing. If RE5 did 600k in Japan, how much was everyone expecting for RE:R???

- Resident Evil Revelations is doing horrible IMO. This is supposed to be a pretty big and nice game, unlike Mercenaries. I expected 600k+, but I think it'll only reach half of that.

Edit: NM I found a poster saying what he expected right here. And yeah. I dont know, maybe Im the only one, but I would not have ever expected RE:R to outsell, or sell on par with a mainline entry on consoles. Not even close.

Some people were saying 400k would be good, though I think that's a little unreasonable given the install base and the lack of the proper 6 in the title.

Already started in a fair few places, but will be interesting to see when it goes crazy. I'll probably buy a brand new DS or DSXL - you can already snag mint condition ones for 4-5k yen in Bookoff.

New Love Plus must have set a new record for the number of different SKUs even if 9 of them are (were) available only through Konami Style.

Edit: NM I found a poster saying what he expected right here. And yeah. I dont know, maybe Im the only one, but I would not have ever expected RE:R to outsell, or sell on par with a mainline entry on consoles. Not even close.

That guy even went on to admit he had no idea what he was talking about. Outselling the mainline console titles, with their larger install bases? Madness.

I expect 300k when all is said and done, and Capcom would probably be pleased with that domestically. The question is what it'll pull overseas. It needs to be a worldwide million seller at least.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Big week for 3DS, Love Plus, Theathrythm and Tekken.

I'd just say the first two. Tekken is lucky if it does 15k in its first week. It could be lower than Good People Die.

@Forever: No, we'll se just one sku...fortunately. :lol

I think people might be underestimating Tekken 3D Prime Edition.
Tekken's the biggest fighter, by far, in Japan.

A few years ago, maybe. But Tekken 6 and Street Fighter IV performed pretty comparably on PS3 and Xbox 360 (not taking the later editions of SF IV into account), and SF IV on 3DS has done better than either PSP Tekken.
