Media Create Sales: Week 5, 2012 (Jan 30 - Feb 05)

RE:R story has nothing relate to the main series , that might be one of the reason why people skip this. I'm judging this from my feeling when I skip MGS PSP (even if I have chance to play) because I have no interest in the spin-off game whatsoever.

Are you calling Peace Walker a spinoff with no relation to the main series?

Also RE:R is canon. How much did RE4 have to do with the previous entries? (Spoiler: Nothing)

Even without those they still got over 600k (which you said it didn't), and yes I expected RE:R to do that well because I was under the impression it was a full blown game, and from what I saw, it looked like it had high production values. I still remember some gaffers saying it looked better than RE5 on 360 which I thought was hearsay but you get the point. If what you're saying is true (i.e. the promotion and hype weren't there for RE:R) then I admit that my prediction was unrealistic.
After 2 weeks RE5 did 475k, 383k if we're looking at PS3 only. Revelations actually had significantly less 2nd week dropoff than RE5 did too, it may wind up with even better legs.

Capcom's poor advertising skills in the UK have killed this in its second week, with all the focus turning to RE6, even on TV, making Revelations a distant memory very quickly.

I haven't seen a copy on shelves in the UK since launch day, so perhaps more of a stock issue, I don't know if it's that typo thing. RE6 adverts is weird enough, maybe they had ORC ads booked but decided to run these instead?!

On topic:
Is Raccoon City coming out in Japan?

Actually, I've seen rather a lot of RE:R advertising ("We are Veltro..." etc. etc. :)) over the past couple of weeks - more than any other third-party 3DS game, so perhaps it's a case of what channels you're watching? By contrast, I saw one RE6 teaser within a day or so of the game being announced (which was shocking in itself - the game's nearly a year off!).
You're the first person I've seen posting that has said that, although I can't really say I've been looking too hard. However, I saw about four adverts for RE6 whilst watching Man City vs. Everton recently on Sky Sports. I was stunned. Seeing Darron Gibson score the winner for Everton (being a United fan) helped me overcome the shock, though, haha ^^

isnt jacko like mega mega popular in japan? i'm thinking if nintendo had handled the experience it could've done very well
Exactly what I was thinking...It could have ridden the success wave of Just Dance and Minna no Rhythm Tengoku.

EDIT:

I don't know if it's that typo thing
Very valid point, and one I hadn't considered!

PAL version of Revelations doesn't have the typo fault. ;) It's a stock thing for sure.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
The typo thing is exclusive to the US release. We've just had a low shipment from Nintendo and Capcom for the first week, and they need to restock again. Come on! It must sells for a good time in Europe too! :p

So glad photokano did well. I added 1 to those sales.
Not really sure one can say it did well, considering it sold considerably less its first week on a popular portable than the previous title did on a last-gen console in its death throes as well as much lesser than that same old title did on the same popular portable.

But it does seem like a slow week overall in general.

You work at a retailer? Is that low shipment matter confirmed for specific European countries, or are you referring to UK only?

The "we" dosen't mean that I work at a retailer, but it stays for "We Europeans", and the low stock talking comes from some of the posts on Gaf, yours including. XD

Thanks, In future they should think about giving Europe some exclusive typos, don't want to feel left out.

Japan doesn't really buy fighting games anymore. Weird. Wonder how SFxTK will fare. Not like it'll matter much, since it's a minute market for fighters in general.

Next year, the Wii U will have a competing console with an infinite money supply which is the successor to a very popular console and has an inventive hook that threatens to keep users of that predecessor from switching tracks.

I have to guess that you're talking worldwide with the 720, as that certainly won't be the case in Japan. Or am I missing some other console planned to launch in 2013 from a company with an infinite money supply?

Wait, Wii have sold 12 million since its launch in Japan, while PSP has sold 18 million since its launch?

And they've about sold the same amounts of retail software. *shrugs*

I don't know why I had this picture in my head of Wii being the one with most sold units after PS2. :/

Even limiting it to home consoles, there's PS1 in-between.

It's not Sony platforms that makes tales successful in Japan. It's more PS3 being a really strange anomaly.

I don't think it's that strange. Tales fans are interested in main-series entries with high production values and lots of anime/voice, on a home console, with a traditional controller; they overlap heavily with the fanbase of other niche AV-oriented RPGs and not so much with the audiences for more family-oriented titles. The PS3 is the only system that meets those needs in Japan so it's the only one where Tales has blossomed.

That said, it wouldn't entirely surprise me if pure fanservice games (like the Tales of the World entries) could perform decently on Vita the way they did on PSP.

My thinking exactly, since its easier to track software sales than real sales, so why dont sony, MS or nintendo release anything ?

Because there's literally no benefit to them releasing that info.

The 3DS kind of has the advantage of not very viable competition.* The Gamecube had a far more popular, already entrenched competing console and another competing console with an infinite money supply.

It does have the first-mover advantage, though, and it will presumably have a price advantage. Gamecube situation should not happen, but it could still easily emerge in a place other than first.

* from a consumer purchasing perspective. I'm not saying that PSV is a bad system or anything, it's just that the price difference is not justified in the minds of a typical buyer.

Part in bold is wrong. Microsoft actually wants to profit from the 720, you know. The infinite money supply argument is only applicable to the original Xbox, which was never intended to turn a profit in the first place. Microsoft's strategy was always to take a loss, building up mindshare, with the original Xbox then use that leverage to turn a profit with it's successors. For this strategy to truly pay off, it's crucial for Microsoft to start booking in black with 720 as soon as possible.

I wonder why 3DS' more significant games are all released in one week instead of being placed in different weeks. As for Vita, there's nothing that looks like it will do respectable numbers. If Gravity Daze bombs, I have little hope for any Vita software in the coming months.

Ninja Gaiden? Maybe?

I think it should be fine. New Love Plus has the week to itself. Tekken and Theatrhythm won't likely sell to the same crowd (and both will be front loaded). Mario and Sonic will have a week to itself (and I'm assuming won't even sell all that great). And New RPG and Metal Gear Solid will be attracting to different genders.

Now should all of this be hitting week after week? Maybe not. But if Vita says anything, one decent release each week doesn't necessarily push hardware.

A log of people use there PSP as music/movie/portable devices.

A port of a port of a port? Yeah.... I don't really have a good feeling that it will do well.

I was really just talking about the releases in February. Theatrhythm, Tekken, and Love Plus all release in the same week. I thought that if there's at least one decent title a week, hardware sales would stay steady(it could still fall, but not as much). The March lineup looks great.

Man, you gotta love how the early cycles of consoles bring all the crazies into sales-age threads. Some of the comments this week are truly LOL-worthy.

Is it becoming a regular thing for Western games to break the top 10 in Japan.

I mean out of all games, Dragon Age 2???

Fairly regular for the bigger AAA games, CoD has been doing it for a couple of years, Uncharted and Battlefeild both were top 10 in the same week last year.

Downloading now...

Downloading!? Well then you certainly aren't helping it on next week's charts, are you??

sarcasm. Enjoy it. Enjoy it hard.

Also, I wonder about how Theatrhythm will do. I cancelled my preorder this morning (based on opening-day 8-song DLC at two bucks a pop, MichaelJordanLaughing.gif) and the clerk chuckled a bit in the middle of his kashikomarimashita.

I think RE:R is doing great, considering this is the first real RE effort on a handheld (I think).
It's still modest I think but some titles having launched last year and in January tend to have legs. I hope RE:R can follow the trend and eventually outsell REØ (400,750 on GC, according to Garaph).

In any case, the game is great and I think this perception is widespread among video gamers, so Revelations represents a good start for this kind of games on a handheld Nintendo platform.

Gravity Daze seemed to do pretty well at retail (Bic Camera Yurakucho), but still plenty of supply. The free art booklet that comes with it is a nice bonus.

I'm not certain Theatrhythm *will* be front-loaded. It's had a demo *and* it's got the magic word "Rhythm" in it. Provided purchasers notice that the word's at the end this time.

I do think it'll possibly appear to have slower legs due to higher initial sales based on the FF name, but I could see it always bobbling around the low end of the top 50 like similar leggy titles.

If "New Love Plus" bombs (it won't), expect the next one to be a rhythm game. They can call it "Love Plus: Rhythm Method", or something. What could *possibly* go wrong?
