Happy Birthday, Nintendo 3DS! Has it been a year already?

Urgh, this thread is reminding me that I still need to buy Resident Evil: Revelations, Pushmo and Tales of the Abyss. How much does Pushmo cost? And which first RE:R or TotA?

At least I preordered Kid Icarus Uprising so I'll just open my mail box to it on day one or two.

Get Tales of the Abyss now because it may not be available much longer. By the time you're done with it, Resi might be on sale or something.

Pushmo is like 6 or 7 bucks. Well worth it. Lots of content.

Makes me wish the 3DS had a higher resolution screen. :(

Only major complaints I have with the system is that my phone has a better (though not 3D) screen, the DS backward compatibility is too ugly for me to give up my DS, and the d-pad and buttons aren't my favorite type.

Give the 3DS buttons like the GBA Micro and I would be in HEAVEN!

Well, once you start talking about DS games as well, the system is utterly insane. I still have my DS as the -emergency- machine. In a worst case scenario, i can play Ketsui for 11 hours or so.

The 3DS and eShop is probably the best gaming related thing that ever happened to the Brazilian market. The prince o the eshop are in my currency and are *gasp* affordable.

In a country that consoles and PC cost about 3x the price in US, this is a huge thing for me!!

I never though that one day I would be exclusively playing portable game, but apparently this year will be the first. and I am happy with my 3ds :)

3DS is only 1? Man it looks old.

RE and Pushmo are the few pluses for me. The hardware is just so underwhelming that it sours my excitement to play any of it's games.

I need a revision bad. It feels like the original DS fat (not literally) to me, in that it comes off clunky and ugly. And getting a Vita isn't making it any easier.

But bring on Layton and KI.

It's been a fun year from me, and I'm still playing Samurai Warriors Chronicles despite new and great games coming out to make it great. Originally I bought it to replace my DS and play those games, but it's long since become solid purely for it's own merit.

Besides the already mentioned greats such as Pushmo and Resident Evil, I'm been quite surprised by the 3D Classics and hope to see more of them.

Kirby's Adventure and Kid Icarus just pops out and more importantly in to look better than before. I wanted to keep playing because it looked so interesting.
Xevious is actually made more playable by seeing the distance and it's enough of a change that I can go back and replay it. There are better shmups and I hope to see them on 3DS's eShop (I would kill for a R-Type DX 3D or Chikyuu Kaihou Gun ZAS), but it's good to have one at all now.

It's a good start and for some of these games I don't mind getting them again at all. I just want more of a selection, and perhaps slightly lower cost.

I'm making use of Street Pass for Resident Evil, but I want more. It's a great idea and can help games out a lot, but I need more of a reason to leave wireless on and so far no other game interests me to do it that much.

What I need however is a Metroidvania, and no Cave Story doesn't count considering I own it on Wii and PC already. I need something new, a full title I can spend many many hours on. Until then, I can at least some new titles that I didn't know I wanted, such as Dillon's Rolling Western.

I got my 3ds last June and I do not regret it one bit.

I only have 5 3ds games though, but theyve been more than enough to tide me over and I can't wait for Kid Icarus and Luigis Mansion 2.

I can't honestly say I've made good use of my purchase. The 3 Nintendo games are solid (though 3D Land was somewhat disappointing for a Mario title), but besides that, I'm not really enjoying the system. I've spent too much money on throwaway titles.

The 3DS isn't bad, but its first year certainly did not live up to my expectations. I still use my DSi XL more since the DS library is (obviously) much more robust and the XL is a far better way to play DS games.

What titles were throw away? Did you buy the system pre price drop?

IMO unless you were happy with the ambassador games I feel like people who wait for Mario + Kart + two bundles are probably infinitely more satisfied with the system. The cheaper entry point is a huge deal, and there hasn't been near the downtime between from when they got the system till now. This especially goes if you throw in online Kart fun and the eshop.

That being said I'd probably have a vastly different opinion of the system if I got mine say last March or April for 250 bones.

Got my 3DS a few weeks after NA release. I played the hell out of Pilotwings, OOT3D, Mario 3D Land, and am currently playing RE: Revelations. I don't regret my purchase at all, can't believe its been a year already.

Yes, I bought it day 1. The price drop was a bit of a slap in the face. The Ambassador titles are nice, but definitely don't make up for the $80.

Really, I shouldn't have bought it day 1. Ended up buying Pilotwings, which was terrible, Street Fighter, which runs at 30fps in 3D, and Nintendogs (I have no idea why...). I got Ghost Recon as well, which seems like a solid title, but I'm completely uninterested by it. Starfox was...short. I don't know what else I expected, since I've played Starfox before.

I can't complain too much about Nintendo's support year 1. Their support has been solid. Third party support has simply been unremarkable. I feel like there have been no real gems or surprises for the system over the year. No Laytons or Ace Attorneys or Elite Beat Agents.

Other than that, I'd say it's not just the games, but the system itself. Glassless 3D is a mixed bag for me. 3D is nice sometimes, but the viewing angles suck and often times I just switch back to 2D for convenience. The online 3DS shop is a mess. The system is lacking a second analog nub and is getting a nasty patch job to rectify that. DS games just don't look good at all on the system.

It hasn't been terrible, but it certainly did not live up to my expectations.

I have ambassador games, DK 94, Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Star Fox, Nintendogs, and Ghost Recon. Have to say I have been pretty content with it and 2012 looks like another big year of software

Since I see a lot of people saying that DS games look bad on the 3DS due to the resolution difference I want to ask, won't DS games look pretty bad on XL as well? It has the same resolution as other DS models, but with a larger screen. Wouldn't this make the games all stretched out? I don't have a DSiXL so I wouldn't know, but I'd like you to tell me if you do.

I bought my 3DS at launch after it became one of my most anticipated systems ever following up on one of my favorite video game platforms of all time in the DS. I knew it was going to be slim pickings at launch, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Steel Diver, Pilotwings, Street Fighter, and Ghost Recon. The software drought was really disappointing and other than a couple games like Dead or Alive and OoT 3D there really wasn't much to play. I pretty much bought the system because of the potential, but I did feel severely burned by the price drop and the ambassador program did not really rectify that for me because I have played/own almost every game that was offered up in the program. I'm also disappointed by the poor design of the 3DS as far as the screen scratching issue goes. I've been careful about it since the word spread about the problem but I feel like I shouldn't have to do anything special, like keeping a cloth between the 3DS when it's closed, to keep my device in pristine condition other than taking good care of it.

With all of that being said though, the 3DS has become my system of choice at the moment, and I am loving it. Ever since Mario 3D Land was released for it, I have been hooked. I have also been pleasantly surprised by the Eshop games. I for one am not the kind of person who enjoys buying digital releases as I am somewhat of a collector who enjoys owning a physical product, but Pushmo has become one of my favorite puzzle games in ages. Sakura Samurai, Mighty Switch Force, Mutant Mudds, and Dillon's Rolling Western have all been incredible experiences for me and what I would want and expect from downloadable games. Here's to another great year for the 3DS. Looking forward to so many upcoming games with Layton vs Ace Attorney being on the top of my list.

A lot of things happened for a year, I haven't experienced a platform having this much up and downs in such a short amount of time. I was excited for it like a kid when it was first shown at E3, then felt deceived around its launch, then it was a wait and see and it has finally become one of my favourite systems at this moment in time.

I jumped in around May because of the stream of games I had my eyes on were about to be released. Pilotwings being the first game, Dead or Alive Dimensions coming in May, then the Legend of Zelda OOT coming around June and either Starfox 3D or ToA after that. It was well planned I thought. It was also Pilotwings that pushed me to get it along with a slight pricedrop (220 instead of 245 euros). Playing Pilotwings in those demo stations, the game felt really fun, interesting and easy to pick up. Making 3 possible games to get busy with a barely acceptable number.

Things went as planned for a while, Pilotwings was fun and completed, played the hell out of Dead or Alive Dimensions and started two hours on Zelda OOT. Then we had the Ambassador games out of nowhere, I got busy with the 10 nes games and forgot about OOT. They were fun games (decided not to play Mario Bros. or Metroid until the patch comes out in order to save) and my first experience with them. Playing the Zelda games, it also made me want to play the other Zelda games in a chronological order, that means that Zelda OOT would come later and Link's Awakening had to be played first.

I had a slight interest in Mario 3D Land and I would get it but I was never a huge mario fan and haven't played the galaxy games yet for instance. It turned out to be a great game, one where you felt like the 3DS reached its next level of games. ToA came out later than expected and didn't get around it, but I also had a slight interest in Mario Kart 7 now. Prior to it, I played the GBA one briefly. I was afraid I would waste my money but again, it turned out to be brilliant too. The GBA ambassador games came around that time and I started playing Mario Kart SC with Mario Kart 7, it was a fun experience.

Lately I've been playing with the GBA games, done MK SC, Warioware Inc. and currently playing Mario VS. Donkey Kong. F-zero was a bad game and the only one I didn't finish *deleted*. That one seems to be too outdated and doesn't offer anything worthwhile to play it. Between the GBA games, I've always been enjoying demos, swapnote, video service and the Mii mini-games. And also Super Mario Bros. nes with the patch to save anywhere, completed that.

Now I have more than enough games to play and not enough time to get around them: ToA, Sonic Generations, Zelda OOT and the GBA games. Also want to get Pushimo, Link's Awakening, Resident Evil R and perhaps Starfox 3D once those are out of the way. The future also looks bright, with games like Fire Emblem, KH 3D, Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario and Animal Crossing.

And even i am moderately surprised
Just to add - i got Ambassadored twice - once for US and once for JPN. Whilst the games we got were fine and all that i have more than got the full price worth out of the machines.

Absolutely no complaints on an entertainment front - only complaints have been battery life (solved) and screen feeling a little cramped. Nowt i can do about the second one and , as it turns out, great games transcend hardware quibbles.

I picked up my 3DS less than a month ago and haven't regretted it for a second. It looks gorgeous in white, I was never a fan of the look of the system before the white came along though. Super Mario 3DS Land has probably gone onto be one of my favourite handheld games ever - I'm just working my way through the special stages while cleaning up the stray coins in the first 8 worlds. Pullblox is outrageously good value and there's slowly becoming a lot of solid purchases on the eShop. I'm looking forward to seeing what else the 3DS has in store in 2012.

I still use the XL to play DS games over the 3DS. I think it looks better on the XL. Keep in mind what you are asking is highly subjective. It would be easier to get people at work to agree on what music to listen too.

Over all, I am not very happy with the games available on 3DS. I played a ton of Mario 3D and beat OOT twice, but I think the really good games are yet to be released. I am hoping for more RPGs, which usually come out later in a systems life. I am hoping this is the year for the games. I am looking forward to Paper Mario and Fire Emblem at least.

And no, I do not count DS games towards the 3DS library. I am glad it is backwards compatible, but I still rather play DS games on my XL.

One year of 3ds.
I didn't buy a lot of games, but surely spent a lot of time with it.

I can say I'm a little bothered by the eshop because I see Nintendo is serious here with a catalogue of quality games that will quickly beat the wiiware in its whole life. But after loosing my first console and hadn't the possibility to re-download my eshop games and ambassador program I was really disappointed. Pullblox really teased me and I finally bought it but now I'm waiting for news about the new nintendo network about account system.

The nintendo games were great, Mario 3d land pretty ambitious with the 2d/3d mix, mario kart 7 with particularly good and surprising artstyle, it seems thanks to some retro studio design and a well balanced gameplay.
Resident evil was awesome too with I think a solid campaign and a bit more than that and the addictive raid mode.

What please me the most is that the 3ds is a quick booting console. Mario 3d land is the perfect example. From launching the game to playing it, quitting or retrying a level, it's a matter of seconds. The same for my online experience, pretty fast and stable with all the games I played.

The year has flown by! I enjoy all system launches, especially when I'm buying one, but buying my PAL 3DS last March is up there with one of the best. Midnight opening, getting home and seeing the 3D effect for the first time, staying up to 3am, eyes sore from tiredness and looking at 3D :p

There has been a nice, steady stream of releases too and so far, a couple of nice imports with more on the horizon - buying an additional Japanese system was one of the best gaming related purchases I made last year.

Also have to mention the Virtual Console. I'm really loving revisiting and also discovering Game Boy games and can't wait until the Game Gear games start coming.

I am disappointed to the system. Besides Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Mario Land 3D and Resident Evil Revelations the 3DS lineup is pathetic for me.

There are no first person shooters, no decent driving games and no I'm not talking about Mario Kart.

Future lineup besides nintendo franchises is not looking good.

Heroes of Ruin: looks like crap with a bad framerate compared to Dungeon Hunter for Vita.

Vita is getting good amount of western support if you look the news and rumours. Borderlands 2 for Vita? where are same caliber quality games for 3DS from western developers? there are none, zero, and Vita is just released and it's seems to get lot's of quality support. 3DS is 1 year old and there is nothing of that sort for the system, quite sad if you ask me.

Like Resident Evil Revelations show 3DS is quite graphical powerhouse, but still developers won't use those properties and games look like DS up ports, some look better, but most games looks poor if you think the 3DS specs. Like Etrian Odyssey 4. If you look at scans you wouldn't believe it is 3DS game.

Vita games just look so much better and I'm seriously thinking to sell my 3DS and buy a Vita.

Sorry Nintendo, but your franchises only won't hold the system for me.

Is this a serious post? Vita's western support is nonexistant, aside from Sony's internal studios. Borderlands 2 was just a vague expression of interest in the platform by an individual developer. It's less than vaporware.

In any case, plenty of vitas on the shelves if that scheduled release library excites you - move along.

Well how about the upcoming Bioshock or Call of Duty for Vita?

I would say those titles are pretty popular.

Yes, those sure are some great logos without screenshots or release dates.

That said, if it's western games you're looking for, vita is a good choice because most of sony's IPs are western IPs (and you can see that in the first party library already). Don't expect much third party support, however, unless sales really surprise on the upside.

I was originally on the fence with the 3DS but i waited for the price drop, and then when best buy offered a $50 GC and a buy 2 get 1 free deal on games in the same week I went ahead and pulled the trigger and I'm really happy i did.

I took it with me to disneyworld at new years and I was having fun with the street pass connections (got over 120 or so) and took some really neat 3D pictures with it.

I have 4 games total; Mario Kart, 3D Land, Star Fox and Mario/Sonic Olympics.

My only disappointment was at how short Star Fox was.

I love my 3DS but I can't find a decent 3rd party offer so far. My only 3rd party game is Tales of the Abbys. I have OOT, 3D Land, MK7, Star Fox. And my next purchase will be Kid Icarus and then Mario Tennis after that. I'm the reason why 3rd parties hate Nintendo. I've never really liked RE which is a shame because the game looks great but can't say that I enjoyed the demo.
I bought my 3DS on December btw.

Not counting the e-shop which has been surprisingly varied and I love the games I've purchased from it.

But I do love my 3DS. I hope it keeps selling well so it can have a juggernaut of a catalogue just like the DS.

How short?

Like maybe 30 minutes - 1 hour. Granted there are many side missions and its one of those you can replay and try to beat your score, but i was shocked when i got to the end. I never played the original back when it came out so I really had no idea what to expect.

3DS is a good system for sure and I am looking forward to Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario Tennis and Paper Mario whenever they turn up. I am struggling through RE:R at the moment which I don't really think much to. Still, it's better than RE5 at least, but that's not saying much.

My main issue with 3DS is that it's fucking uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time. I commute 2hrs a day to work and during that time I spend nearly 1.hrs playing games on 3DS (yes, it requires charging when I get to work or it won't survive the trip home) and its fucking agony playing on it sometimes.

Bigger, more comfortable system please with bigger buttons.

It's list of doom for me is

- SHOCKING battery life
- Uncomfortable design
- Small input buttons
- 3D is useless because the angle of bite is so narrow. Does give a nice effect sometimes.
- No 2nd analog, and oh look what they've done to fix it
- NO DOWNLOADABLE GAMES!!! Why do I have to switch game cartridges in 2011/2012?

I am sure a new system will come out and fix most of those issues. I really hope Nintendo sort out fully downloadable games though, that would be rad.

Got my 3DS at a midnight launch in NA. The first few months were tough, that's for sure, but once the fall hit, it seemed nonstop. Over the holidays, I played my 3DS more than my 360 and PC, which I don't think I've ever done with a portable before. Maybe it's just a shift in life style, but I definitely see portables remaining my main way of playing for the near future and I hope the 3DS continues on like it has been for the last few months.

On the negative side, one year later and I still can't message a friend (besides SwapNote) or communicate in game, which in 2012 is absolutely ridiculous. I think that Square Enix gaem that looks like Torchlight has voice chat, but it should have been implemented a long time ago. Games like Mercenaries would have been much easier if you could give your partner a heads up on enemies in the area.

I sold mine back in September. I didn't care for the 3D effect so I was always turning it off, and it was uncomfortable for me to hold for longer than fifteen minutes or so. I liked the games I had fine, Pilotwings, SFIV, RR, Zelda, DOA, but the system itself wasn't doing it for me.

I'll pick one up when it gets a re-design.

FindMii 2 is my life, now. This is it. This is the real killer app of this system. I dare hope some publications put it up for GOTY, bwahaha.

I regretted a couple of purchase - (Steel Diver, Nintendogs, Pilotwing), but can't complain with

Mario Kart 7
Tales of The Abyss
Super Mario 3D Land
Pushmo
Star Fox 64 3D
Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D
Zen Pinball

Even Samurai Warriors got a good 100+ hours from me. Battery Life used to bug me a little, but I forgot all about it with Nyko Powergrip.

Currently I own 11 3DS games

Zelda OoT 3D
Star Fox 64 3D
Super Mario 3D Land
Cave Story 3D
Mario Kart 7
Nintendogs & Cats Toy Poodle edition
Steel Diver
Pilotwings Resort
Super Street Fighter 4
Resident Evil Revelations
Tales of the Abyss

I also have the CPP and the following digital titles

Pushmo
Mighty Switch Force
Dillon's Rolling Western
3D Classics Xevious
3D Classics Kirby's Adventure

Nice little library of games for this system, really enjoyingit

I was wondering what everyone's playtime was for 2011. I didn't really see it here so I'll start:

N5rRTl.jpg

I know some people on here will probably have a lot more, but I generally never play games to that much any more because of school - the last years of my undergrad, so I barely get time unless its on the bus/train rides ... but seems like I play often enough still.

2012 is shaping up to be about the same though, possibly even more with Abyss, Mario Kart 7, Radiant Historia reprint, Kid Icarus: Uprising and Kingdom Hearts 3D + more =/

When the NA birthday rolls around, I plan on starting a thread to collect people's 3DS stats, including things like most frequently played games, their respective gameplay times, total steps taken, total streetpasses, things like that. The 3DS makes it super easy to access this info.

I think it would be interesting to see how GAF has played with their 3DS for its first year.

The circle pad pro is supposed to be great re: cramping, if you can deal with the bulk and aesthetic problems.
