I have had the PSVita since December and I have been very happy with it so far but something is really troubling me.

I wanted to play some of the PSP games I had missed out on playing over the last few years so I figured I would buy them from PSN to play on the Vita. I found out the games I wanted to buy were priced ridiculously. For instance Persona 3 portable is £27.99 on PSN whereas I can get it for under £20 at a number of online retailers. All of the games I wanted were far more expensive than other outlets. There are even some games on PSN that are over RRP such as Space marine for PS3 which is selling for £50 on PSN (can be found online for £12.99).

The road to digital distribution should have made games cheaper as the publishers are essentially cutting out the cost of retail distribution but it has only made them more greedy as they realised that they essentially control the only outlet (PSN) with no competition. If you are a PSVITA owner wanting to play PSP games you can only get it through PSN and only at the price that the publisher deems suitable.

On the highstreet and online there are many websites selling the same games and the prices of the games go down over time due to competition from other retailers and also customer demand. Having a single market on a closed platform with no competition does not bode well on our wallets :(.
 
Finally, IMO, I hope they don't touch this setup if it compromises the snappiness of the system and the OS and how quickly you can switch between things. It's a massive plus point for Vita's user experience, and a good spend of RAM if it's necessary, IMO. I think the reason the OS is so snappy is because it basically is kept 'hot' on its own partition of memory and on its own CPU core at all times. I would not want that compromised now. If Sony can't achieve the same result with less RAM they shouldn't give back any, I think.
Yeah, the OS responsiveness is extremely vital, and I believe it's one of the main strengths of the Vita. However, if they can reduce it by even 50MB, I think that would be a great achievement. There's still plenty of room to create impressive games on 256MB + 128MB VRAM at that resolution, as more and more developers get used to the system.

Also, it's strange that I now see so many people on my friends list with the orange away symbol. That never used to happen before.

Out of the 4 titles I own UC is my favorite by far. Its not ND which people need to recognize so Bend did one of the best jobs they could with this mega franchise. I love the puzzle and exploration elements, and when you turn the sensitivity up and turn auto aim on it controls PERFECTLY; its a lot like RDR aiming, it works great! What a fantastic first effort and for a launch title I am very impressed.
 
Just put a nice scratch on the bottom plastic of my Vita trying to put it into the dock without looking at it. Oh well, the first scratch is always the hardest. :-(

I agree, but there are some retailers that sell downloadable copies cheaper than the PS Store.

All 3 have only played one game...HOt Shot Golf

That golf game really THAT good?
 
If they unlock just 50-60MB more, along the inevitable engine optimizations, we should see some amazing 2nd and 3rd gen games.

It all really depends if developers are limited. I don't think they've tapped the hardware enough to suck all the power it has and can provide. I believe devs will get better and making Vita games as close as possible to it's console counterpart, and the additional RAM may help but for a screen it's size, it won't make a huge difference. As much as Vita lacks anti-aliasing in launch titles, they look beautiful! Though, I can't imagine how awesome they would look with 2xAA or *gasp* 4xAA.

Does Vita support MLAA by any chance?
 
How fast are the vita memory cards?

Because posters on gamefaqs and Sonys boards are claiming they are only 4-6mb/s

Instead tests show that the vita memory cards have the read speed of a measily 4mb/s!!! Why?
 
Sonys game carts have a higher but still low read speed of 6 mb/s. This is why Wipeout has such atrociously load times and this is why it's loadtimes are even longer for the digital version of the game rather than the cart.
 
That was a stupid move by Sony. Loadtimes are the death of portable gaming, they hurt the psp and will hurt the Vita.
 
For such a high price, their memory cards should atleast be 20 MBs/s. This would encourage sales of digital games which is good for Sony. Digital games have much higher profit margins than retail games. This is also why they should sell the cards for cheaper. Many gamers including I considered buying a 32gb card and going all digital since it's more convenient but were discouraged from doing so due to the high prices of the cards. People that were considering big cards were doing so because they wanted to make lots of digital purchases.

Fortunately Sony can still fix this. Release higher speed cards ASAP and lower the price Sony."

It was fairly obvious to most of us on here that the proprietary memory cards were merely a cash grab.

There were a select few holdouts claiming a "faster rate" but apparently that looks like it was debunked fairly quickly.
 
256MB is a lot for barebone OS. I think they can trim down to 128MB as time goes on. (PS3 managed to cut almost 1/2 of OS ram usage after 1-2 years)
 
Ok I'm thinking of getting a Vita, so what is the best deal in the UK? (sorry if this has been asked before but I was not following the thread).

I never had a PSP and am a big MGS fan.

I thought MGS HD collection was 2, 3 and PW? Isn't that what's coming to Vita?

Wut? Fifa, Hustle Kings, Little Deviants, ModNation Racers, UMvC3, Super StarDust Delta and plenty of others all have AA, 4X in most of them I dare to say.

Also, Vita supports MSAA according Sony's official specs.
 
I know, I was one of those people that presumed the high price was because the new memory cards would have fast transfer speeds but it looks like that isn't the case, I'm not gonna jump the gun here but if these cards are really confirmed to have a transfer speed of only 4-6/mbs then Sony have some explaining to do.

I think we may have found out how Sony intends to undercut Nintendo in the cost of cart manufacturing ...

They are a shameless cash grab.

Amazon Basics Class 10 SDHC is $34 - to justify $100 price tag for PS Vita 32 gig they will have to be some kind of magic fairy dust 32 gig card...didn't even have the decency to at least give us class 10 performance for this kind of money.

Vita's GPU is great at MSAA (since it is a TBDR), framebuffer "AA" methods like MLAA or FXAA don't make any sense on the platform. The lack of AA on some high-profile launch titles is a result of time constraints and/or porting unsuitable tech, not of the platform.

I wish we had something like this for the UK, AFAIK Sony never launched the digital redeem code scheme outside the US for PSP. It seems likely that Sony will stop it in the US as well soon seeing as they stopped providing Amazon with digital codes late last year.
 
I've done that twice now and still no go.

Same error code for both, searching does nothing.

Edit: Only Google results is this post from Playstation forums in German which nobody replied too (and I can't read) and my other post in this thread from yesterday which got ignored.

I get the exact same error message when trying to copy over Valkyrie Chronicles 2.
 
They need to bring back Game pause states like the PSP go.

It would also solve the multitasking problem.
the reason you can't currently play a game, then jump to the browser, or another game, or facebook, etc. is because lack of ram.

The vita could pause the game (dump the ram to the memory card) when the use wants to open up another app like the browser. And when theyre done with the browser, close it or pause it(?), then resume the game (load it's ram back).

Only problem is that it would take some memory card space.
 
sony and other companies could make a killing on PSP DD but games that are $30/$40 aren't happening. i'll go as high as $20 (well... ok $22 that i paid for VC2) but anything more won't happen.

hopefully they have sales at some point or setup a monthly discount sales because there are literally 10-20 games i would buy if they were a bit cheaper
 


This is good news, can't wait to see what apps we get, hope this becomes popular with devs out there.

Don't count on it. I think the main focus of PS Suite is to target the smartphone market with the option to develop for PSVita on the side. AFAIK they haven't even prepared for any VITA integration yet. Some of the features of the Vita such as the use of back touch panel are not even going to be available to PS Suite developers.

Yep. Can't believe no big sales right now when so many new users willing to spend are out there.
