It beating out Chihayafuru still stings.

Yes, it kind of does.
Ok It REALLY DOES.

This was literally the first thing I thought about when I saw the pics of Elena.
It's going to be ridiculous.
I'm setting aside some money for defribillators.

[Nadia: Secret of Blue Water]
I followed the guidance of The Nautilus Story (like other times) on old DVD material, as I don't have the new Blu-ray set, yet.

What never ceases to amaze me is the tone of the show; I mean, what ultimately remains in your memory from this is the accomplished sensation of an extremely enjoyable and righteous adventure show, but without being too indulgent as it follows that haunting and obscure mysticism that Mr. Anno, Mr. Maeda & Co. made very well in incorporate to this kind of genre series (on Mr. Sagisu's work, along with proto-Evangelion electric fanfares are eerie tracks that also reflect this very well).

The shift of impressions about the Nautilus, from its heroic crew protecting the seas, to that vision of a desperate bunch of renegade people who carry the burden of an spiritual do-or-die battle to wipe the errors of their own past. That leaves a powerful sense of this series' scope and conflict represented beyond that actual human civilization of the time, but that reflects on the human nature.

The Neo-Atlanteans carrying a legacy, the Nautilus/New Nautilus as the opposing force, all of them committed to the same conflict since they landed on Earth, but now also perpetuated by the created humans. Following their origin's sin, dangerous ego and continuous misfortune. All that strikes what I find is a right balance between immobile fate and own-existence despair, and otherwise the troubled nature (to the point of being annoying) of Nadia and her sometimes tragic heroine stance would have fall flat.

Maybe the intensity of this is something to be reminded of time after time, with each viewing.
It's an impressive balancing act for sure. I am certain that Nadia would be a much more fondly remembered and recommended series if it wasn't for the presence of the unforgivable island episodes. Even though you could and should watch the series without experiencing them the work has still been permanently tainted by them.

We have episode titles and brief synopsis for the first two episodes of Fujiko. It looks like they're going for an episodic series instead of an on-going arc. Probably for the best.

Hey I'm just saying, had they succeeded perhaps Fat/Stay Nite would have been slightly less terrible.

Condoning the murder of children, while talkin' shit about Rin? Boo this man.

I'd say. Different goals, different environments, different solutions for a different day. It's what I'd expect from the Lupin series.

Maybe a small overarching plot of some sort, but nothing "over powering"

Honestly, Secret base isn't the reason why I like ano Hana. Its something to like, but it isn't a selling point. Menma herself isn't really the reason either or any character in general.

Sailor Moon R movie

Oh how I loved this. I was sold when I saw how the beginning embraced the first series' eyecatch. Doubly so when Moonlight Densetsu started playing. Beyond that I was in for a treat as this movie captured so much about what I enjoyed about the first two arcs of the anime. It had a wonderfully light atmosphere that turned only as dark as it needed to be, the monster were the strong silent types rather than the sort that became prevalent later on what with individual catchphrases, and Mamoru got a bit of time in the spotlight rather than working as a support character.

I really liked the decision to make Mamoru's childhood the catalyst for the events of the movie. It wasn't touched upon all that much in the anime so there was room enough to plant the seeds of this story without mucking up continuity entirely.
He and Fiore met each other at a time when each needed the support most. There was also that lovely little scene where he met Usagi years before the events of the first series albeit with no recollection of the event later on. I thought all this tied together nicely when Fiore finally came to his senses as he finally realized the source of Mamoru's gift to him. I didn't expect it to and had feared the hospital interaction between Mamoru and Fiore were destined to be throwaway scenes.
Admittedly the focus shifted from him pretty quickly once events were set into motion. The first half of the movie felt more like the normal tv episode whereas the second was akin to the arc resolution set pieces. This doesn't sound like it'd work yet I thought it did pretty well. I suppose that's actually attainable if pacing is managed properly.

There was so much more too such as the new transformations complete with invidualized choruses, the magnificent return of the moon tiara, a villian who
wasn't fooled by tuxedos or sailor suits
, and other silliness like Luna P.'s face reacting to events, Ami's apparent respect for privacy lacking in execution, and everyone teasing Usagi in the greenhouse. The rooftop scene with Luna, Artemis, and Chibi-Usa was a nice callback to the end of the first series too. I did think the movie stopped playing during the scene where
Chibi-Usa attempts to wake up an unconscious Usagi
Nearly twenty seconds of silence and a still frame!

The color coordinated flashback scenes were a nice touch

as were the action scenes which were surprisingly intense.

Some weird imagery which I suppose I should have expected given the director said:

I'm a sucker for these costumes. said:

Ep2's title is ".357 Magnum". Fujiko loses a bet to a widow named Cicciolina, and is tasked with having to steal Jigen's gun.

It's going to rock.

Sailor Moon R movie

The best part about the R movie is that the villain has some sort of super human intelligence that allows him
to figure out the sailor's identities.
It's pretty shocking really.

That and the flowers. So many flowers.

That borderline, huh?

What happened to all the cute gifs!
There seemed to be a noticeable shortage later on from people reviewing this show.

Can't draw blood from a stone, the show went on a diet of cute. :(

*It's times like these that I wish the anime thread adopted Mangaf's policy in regards to spoilers, jesus.

The only reason Mangaf has that policy because manga is auto spoilers for anime, that and literally every post would be filled with nothing but black bars.
I'm sure this will come in useful later on too when I start watching F/SN.

A more appropriate gif would be.

I wonder if Fujiko is going to turn out to be Koike's Panty and Stocking. Wacky, crazy, and wild.
But occasionally unwatchable. :p

Fate/Zero 11:

Japan's apparent rating scale of ancient kings:

Alexander the Great >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gilgamesh > King Arthur

Rider is so fuck-awesome.

One thing I really think is interesting is the amount of detail and thought which has been put into the Nasuverse. One thing notable about the reincarnated Heroic Spirits is that they seem completely unaware of any historical events which have occurred AFTER they died. This is why Saber didn't know who Joan of Arc was, because she lived AFTER the King Arthur of the Arthurian legends died. However, she does know of the division of the Macedonian Empire after the premature death of Alexander the Great, which occurred in antiquity even to her. It's also why Rider didn't know who "Clinton" was until he saw the guy on TV. Despite this, they are reincarnated with relevant knowledge of the mechanics of the time they appear in, for example, Saber notes that with her Riding ability (the same as Rider's), she could fly the airplane they arrived in Japan in if need be.

I remember when I thought Gainax wasn't gonna do a troll ending because we made it all the way to the last 30 seconds of a series without being trolled.

Boy was I wrong.
