This will be very, very interesting. Is Google actually taking ownership, or are they providing distribution for Samsung and ASUS?

If it's the former, it's going to lead to some interesting maneuvering for their manufacturing partners, and Baidu would have a point for existing. If it's the latter, then that's a bit deflating.

Meanwhile in Redmond...

It'll be like the [HTC] Nexus One which was directly sold by Google.

I wonder what makes them think it'll work this time compared to the nexus one... Maybe because people generally buy tablets outright instead of on contract?

EDIT: $50 on it being US only too

We'll see. That's my initial thought as well, but competing directly with Android licensees would appear to open a can of worms.

Now, granted, they have the plus in the tablet space of not having to deal with (and get slapped down by) carriers.

Can anyone give me any simple instructions on how to root my Xperia Play?

Also, since it can't get 2.3.4 because of Verizon, would rooting it allow me to access the PSN and PS Store?

Finally, what would be the best ROM/kernel/whatever you call it to flash? CM7?

Does anyone here know of a GPS app for Android that allows you to share your location in real-time with a few friends or family members at a private URL? Or is there something like this already built into the Motorola Droid Razr, by chance?

Not a private url but you can choose who to share locations with in Google's Latitude; it's also integrated into Map.

Rooting is easy. Super one click.

But you can't change the fucking rom. Sony has the worst type of locked bootloader. Only phones that purchased unlocked can flash a different rom.

You can't even do wifi tethering on this POS.

What does this mean?

Also, news about this phone gets worse and worse...

So I got a Defy for very cheap and didn't even bother with the stock rom, but momentarily went for a CM7 variation with ICS additions.
After completing the installation I got caught in the boot animation loop, so I did this:

I downgraded from CM7 to Stock / Installed a new SBF but I'm having bootlops: (!) If this is happening to you, after flashing the Stock SBF, enter in Stock Recovery and do a full wipe (Data/Cache) and reboot.
Leaving out the bolded part. Now all I see is just the frozen stock animation (the Motorola-M).

Brick?

/edit
I can still enter the Android BootMenu (with Ubisoft's raving rabbit..wtf?), but I'm not sure what to do from here...
I guess I'm going to try to install the plain & stable CM7.

/edit
going back to stock with RSD Lite..

Well they did get Motorola Mobility's hardware division, right?
The article expressly states that they're using Samsung and ASUS as vendors.

Also, Google's gone out of its way to state that they want to keep Motorola and Android as separate entities. They don't even want to give it favored vendor status. Of course, we'll see about that in a few years.

'Google's Android has generated just $550m since 2008, figures suggest'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technolog...re-iphone-android?cat=technology&type=article

They make more money from iOS than they do from Android. Bizarre state of affairs. Kind of good news for Google though, to be making more money off the 'competitor' than their own platform.

i wouldn't take that number as gospel. Its a number given to the courts in case a settlement is needed in the Oracle case. Its going to be as stripped down as legally possible.

That being said, its no doubt they make more advertising revenue from Apple since 2008 since the android marketshare was nonexistent

edit...

its apparent we need a RIM countdown clock. They have to sell at some point or disappear and have the assets get divvied up

Has there been any follow up to the Samsung purchase or licensing of RIM software patents to combat Apple for the business sector?

It seems like if they did, that would give them the foothold against Apple and Motorola for the "business" value-add that the companies are going for.

In reference to this article? Things definitely seem gRIM *trollface.*

Samsung straight up said they weren't and still aren't interested in buying RIM. they said it several times. i mean, they could be lying, they said the same thing about webOS!

i think it would be a pretty good investment to get an enterprise ready system. Although thinking about it, most companies are just pushing activesync out (mine does) and just lets you use anything with an activesync capable client. So, maybe the entire enterprise ready phone is worthless nowadays.

Well I think that encryption is part of the picture of which I believe ICS fixes (Honeycomb did) but you're right, if you're using ActiveSync it's like of lulz worthy of having anything else on a BYOD workplace.

I don't notice a difference on CM9...was there something on your phone going slow?

General UI movement, loading times in particular applications like the gallery. There was always a 1 or 2 second lag behind everything. It seems to have completely vanished.

I'm running AOKP build 29 with Franco-m2 btw.

Just ordered mine from MPD, £26 a month phone for free, only 100 mins but have another contract for that. Will send my GS2 to one of the phone recycle place and with the cash back it will pay for around 10 months of the contract.

Interesting. I'm guessing that's the GN? I'm on the S2 and haven't had any noticable differences. Maybe I just didn't notice the lag in the first place or something. Everything does seem pretty snappy.

wasnt there a big fallout with samsung and some big ROM builders? or am i thinking of another company

I have no idea. But there's still plenty of support for the i9100 and the GN. Don't see why anything would be different for the GS3.

Android 4.0.4 is stupid, stupid fast. Seriously. It's miles faster than even 4.0.3 was.

The only increases in speed I *need* are:

1. Auto-rotate needs to take at most 0.5 seconds, not the full 1-1.5 seconds it takes now

2. Hitting the running apps button is waaaaaay too slow sometimes, like, if it's going to be slow, at least make the vibrate feedback immediate. It isn't now and it's maddening, no idea if I hit it so I hit it again and then it comes up and immediately closes. Bad, bad UX.

rom makers want more than what Samsung currently offers. Samsung is pretty fast when it comes to releasing kernel source, but they don't do much to help beyond that, while others have been doing more lately (like Sony) but since Samsung's bootloader policy so far has been pretty open, they still get support.

plus, ODIN.

When's the S3 supposed to drop?

ODIN is one of the main reasons that I stick with Sammy for all my Android phones. Such a simple tool to easily fix/flash a device.

Wish I could use ODIN. As far as I know, ODIN increases the flash counter on my GS2, so I gotta stick to CWM. I don't mind I guess, CWM does everything I need. It is a handy tool if I ever brick it though.

You need Triangle Away, then.....

I've used this on my Note, and it works like a charm. I used ODIN to flash one of the early ICS leaks, and this pinged the flash counter, and gave the boot triangle alert. 2 minutes later, after installing the app, all was gone. Now, even after using CWM, the counter never moves, so I'm good. It works well.

So i get that phones get released quickly after unveil nowadays but i find it really strange that samsung is keeping new info on the S3 so tight (even on MWC).

Maybe they encountered a problem? Even if the S3 will be "better" than the One X, i bet that HTC will market the "first quadcore" spec to the max and steal thunder from the S3.

Samsung actually reportedly has a counter in the i777 that knows when you reset the counter. So no app or even jig fixes it. No worries here though, I rooted/flashed it the first time in such a way that no counter will ever go off. I just can't use ODIN.
