Sega announces extraordinary loss of 7.1 bn yen, layoffs, restructures, cancels games

damn sad news indeed. No hope for VC3 coming here then.... and Yakuza 5, who knows if they'll localize it.
I guess the sales of Dead Souls and Binary Domain were really bad.

Er, thinking in those terms makes me feel slightly guilty about what it is I'd wish for!

VC3 at any price.

I was hoping for a remaster hd collection of the VC psp games on ps3... I would have so paid $60 for that. The chances of that collection ever happening were pretty low though, none after this news problably :(

How many of those games listed did Sega develop in-house? I agree they're a good publisher, but the golden games of their development are long since gone.

It's been downhill since they killed Smilebit. The Yakuza Team are about all they have left to offer, dev-wise.

Heck, I'm pretty sure Alfa System do most of the work on Phantasy Star Portable/Online.
Smilebit still exists, they're called Sega Sports Design now and they make the Mario & Sonic games.

Sonic Team's still in place too (Sonic Generations, PSO2), including the ex-UGA team who's doing Rhythm Thief. AM1/2/3 are also still going strong, but they don't do much console side besides AM3 on Virtua Tennis and the AM Port Team doing various XBLA/PSN conversions.

Binary Domain being a flop is directly proportional to how stupid people are.

Directly. Proportional.

+1, but upcoming (hopefully?) digi release gives us all a chance at redemption.

thought about mentioning this too, but it kinda fits the argument here no one wants to hear: they're doing highly profitable games now, not ones most of us here want to play, is all.

My GF said this has to be an early april fools joke. I remember back in 2001 when I heard Sega was bowing out. It was Dejavu all over again. Felt bad. Felt like the first time I played Hydlide and realized it wasn't getting better.

Alright, thanks.

I wonder what Sonic game sold 4 million on a Nintendo console though. Secret Rings? Or was it just some BS number the guy made up?

Mario & Sonic did more than that, London might have stopped at 4.

I don't exactly consider those Sonic games, but I could see someone doing so.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
What does this mean for that game they're making with Namco Bandai and Capcom?

Apologies if it's already been addressed, but does this mean that Anarchy Reigns isn't going be published by SEGA?

They had/have(?) really high expectations of it. :L

maybe they should just fire the marketing team.

their games are generally fine even if they lack a bit of inspiration at times

its the marketing team that continues to kill off things like Yakuza series, Shenmue and all those amazing Dreamcast titles

Do they? I honestly don't see that game doing well for them in the least. Mind you, I'm interested in the game myself. Just throwing that out there.

not that EA or any other hypothetical is rosy, but...why would Nintendo be a good match?
i love them too, but they've got enough IP's they're sleeping on without taking on a whole other batch and sorting which ones can be made relevant/profitable.

It's a running joke. Stupid Nintendo fanboys tend to crash into any publisher/developer bad-news thread to go NINTENDO SHOULD BUY THEM. It's impossible to tell what is parody and what is actual insane fanboyism anymore! They have blended into one.

Pretty much. I have a hunch that next gen is going to be very, uhh.., "interesting." And quite a bit depressing.

Yea, it's pretty scary what the next gen will bring. If hundreds of studios closed this gen, next gen will definitely finish off a few others. The only good thing I see about the future is less games being put out, which in turn hopefully gives the great and underrated/overlooked games to get some more attention and sales. Plus it gives me more time to work on my backlog!

In fact I'm gonna call it right now: The great video game crash of 2017-18 :\

It's all so Amusement Vision can make another F-Zero.

It's not as bad as the "Nintendo going 3rd party/doomed" meme.

Rumoured to be finished?

Quite a few recent threads with rumour 'confirmations' the past couple of weeks, along with Skies of Arcadia HD. Now, they seem even less likely, unless they are completely done and releasing them is all thats left.
