The concept art looks pretty cool. Still, the game's graphics could look quite different from the final version. Anyone remember the first "Heroes" trailer before we found out what No More Heroes really looked like ?

To be fair, I think that NMH trailer was the original goal but the Wii couldn't pull it off. It was more of a target render. Hopefully the style of the art will get through in this. It looks similar to NMH to me.

Perhaps so. Killer7 aslo went through noticable changes including story,puzzle-solving, and graphical differences. Most of it can be seen in the early trailers floating around on Youtube. Others are from old video game magazine scans.

I give Grasshopper a free pass on everything because

1)Akira
2)They're the only developers running with the Troma theme, and I wish more would. It seriously makes them my favorite Japanese developer.

The new concept art looks like some very interesting set-pieces. As long as it offers a similar experience to the No More Heroes franchise I will be getting this at day 1.

Nope. No. No. Nuh-uh. NO. You got Lollipop Chainsaw.

This needs to be different in the vain of the Kill the Past series. Please, the juvenile "punk" mentality and humor has been entertaining the past few games, but it's run it's course. Bring back the intelligent writing and twisted plot from Killer7 and the Kill the Past games. The complex plots, I don't give a fuck I'm gonna tell this story, and twisted scenarios were way more "punk" than trying to appeal to the anime otaku and mainstream.

Sine Mora has had the best story of any GHM game since Killer7.

The 1st NMH is. It has a lighter tone but it keeps the complex writing and themes of the Killer 7 era. The second part of the game is very representative of that aspect.

I don't expect KiD to look like K7 of NMH anyway. Each of the 3 "Kill the past" GHM games I know (these + flower, sun & rain) is quite different from the others.

Concept art looks nice and all, but unless the game actually uses this style on screen(which I doubt), it pretty much means nothing to me. Unless they drop an art book.

Yeah, my bad, NMH isn't part of the kill the past arc. However that's because the arc keeps the events from its games linked, not because these games are complex and the others trivial.

If suda is still at pax I'll try and get some info out of him
If you do, ask him why he is such a meanie and hasn't actually directed a game since No More Heroes. >:|

The concept art is cool, but I'm not getting hyped since he isn't directed.

NMH definitely isn't part of the Kill the Past games.

And I personally never encountered any complex themes during my multiple playthroughs. Nothing required me to turn thoughts over in my head or anything. Everything was pretty much at face value or at the very least explained so that no critical thinking was needed. What I did induce from NMH though, is that Suda is a whore. I was pretty sure that NMH (1) was intended to be satirical. It was a social commentary on "gamers", anime obsessed grown men and movie cliches. It was my interpretation that he was mocking the otaku/weaboo crowd. But... It turned out that those were just the kind of people who ended up buying it. (And were blatantly oblivious to it's satirical tone.) So then we end up with NMH2 which felt just like a fan service to those otaku.

Just want to reiterate that I'm saying this as a fan of Suda and I'll continue to buy GHM games day one, because I do enjoy the mindless stupidity of NMH/SoTD/etc. I just prefer the more mature tone and writing of K7/FSR/etc.

I'm a fan aswell ! NMH2 is still one of my favourite games, and I enjoyed SotD a lot. And, of course, I can't wait for LolliChainsaw.

- but -

NMH isn't in the same league, and even if I highly respect it from a literary point of view, I like the second more.

NMH initiated the... whorish, "juvenile punk" style as you call it, but I can't agree when you say that nothing needed critical thinking. I'm thinking of
what's happening with Sylvia and Henry after rank 5, Travis' parents, the story of Jeane, the ghost of Thunder Ryu
and maybe a few others I can't think of, but it certainly made think way beyond the gamer/otaku satire. It wasn't as thick as K7, but then again K7 was cut and doesn't give all the keys needed to understand it.

I think NMH has plenty of deeper meaning regardless of its tonal shift. It's very deliberate.

For what followed, you really have to look at the studios development history. Grasshopper wasnt all Killer7. They had contributed to other games based on anime IPs, as well as less serious work. NMH was their most successful game to date, by far, and demand for a sequel was high. As for Shadows, the project started a Kamiyura (or something), based of Franz Kafka's work. No publisher would bank on it, and EA hated it. Thus we got Shadows instead.

And, as has been stated, Suda himself hasnt been involved in a project to the extent of his older work since NMH. Creative leads for basically all of their modern work are different people.

lol Franz Kafka sucks, nobody has heard of that stuff. Suda, we hired you to make some crazy off the wall horror game so make us some b movie grindhouse stuff. Troma are p cool as well not like that old german book crap. We got visceral working on the high culture shit anyway with a fresh new take on Dante, we haven't read that but it's just like DMC right?

Looks like it might end up with a more serious tone, but No More Heroes swordplay.
Some of the locales also give me Killer7 vibe.

Sadly, I don't expect it to be remarkably stylized, but hopefully it'll at least be unique enough to set itself off from all the mainstream scifi games.

Haven't enjoyed a grasshopper game since killer7. Samurai Champloo was fun, and I haven't played Shadows of the Damned yet, but a proper Suda game would be much appreciated :(

You mean a bad game with a wicked plot?

Suda can do that without directing the game it's just he's not wrtting games like Killer 7 anymore.

I don't think it makes an awful lot of difference whether Suda's the director or not. The problem lies more in the fact that "the industry" (AKA publishers and consumers) are less interested in the more complex (or cerebral if you wish) storylines and unorthodox gameplay elements of GHM's earlier work. He simply backed off, wrote less deep storylines and let others design the gameplay. Even if he would direct again (which he is doing with Kaiho Shojo), it still wouldn't necessarily be anything like his earlier games. It's going to depend on the market. That's why I want him to try making smaller and more experimental games on distribution platforms that would be more receptive.
(AKA PC)

Is the DS version of Flower Sun Rain any good?
Yes it is.

But as a game, it's pure, cruel awfulness. And I liked Killer 7's gameplay.
It's a standard, easy adventure game. Some parts have you running back and forth an awful lot, but that's not exactly foreign to the genre.

"Standard" isn't a word I'd use to describe it.

I had to reboot an early save in the game after facing a puzzle I couldn't solve. Very frustrating.

Also, I love the step counter. Useless but always here to remind you that you're, indeed, running back and forth.

The artworks have a more serious vibe than other recent Grasshopper games. Hopefully the story will be in that vein as well, although it's difficult to tell right now based on a couple of artworks.

Yeah I'm not gonna lie but I think some games should be priced lower if they don't last that long. Although Lollipop Chainsaw I'm buying day one :)

I bet this game will be worth full price though.

I agree, but my attitude is that if I want a creative designer like Suda to keep making games, that I should support him amidst his games being undermined (facepalm SotD, silly reviews say it resembles RE4, OF COURSE IT DOES, SHINJI MIKAMI WORKED ON BOTH GAMES), Hence why I made this facebook timeline cover to hype him myself, you guys are welcome to use it, I hope you do :) I love and respect every other fellow Suda fan, you are the guys who want a different world, attitude, experience when you sit and wanna play a game, you don't want generic!!! You are awesome gamers.

EDIT: I really sound like I'm plugging here >_< it's just that I don't wanna see this game selling 24,000 on first week like SOTD :(
