I think there is a chance they may not launch PS4 until late 2014. Infact I'd say that is pretty likely given their new targets and how expensive console launches are.
Seriously. There's absolutely no way they're bumping their margin up to 8% with a loss-leading PS4.
Yeah, it really doesn't make any sense unless they are taking a very different approach with the PS4 than they've taken with any of their other platforms.

I guess that it just depends on how much they're willing to lose per unit. Going the Wii route would be very dangerous. They'd probably make some money, but it would be without question the least successful PS console in terms of overall sales. Well, unless they manage to figure out a hook like Nintendo did with the Wiimote. But I doubt that'll happen. There's no way that they're going to be able to sell their base on a system that might be a slight step up from the PS3.

The Company also aims to increase sales by enriching its catalog of downloadable game titles and subscription services available through the PSN platform
But we're talking two years after the next gen hardware launch. There's no way PS3 sales are going to be a substantial contributor by that point.
Gaming, specifically their home consoles, are relatively safe. Digital imaging too, for the most part. I have ZERO faith in Sony's mobile department, though.
Or they charge for PSN, how much do Microsoft make per year from XBL?
FY14 = April 2014 - March 2015, so that period ranges from 5-6 months after PS4's release. With a cut-price PS3, PS3 software should still be a decent profit driver at that point.
The Vita business is likely to be profitable then - it is now? - the question is if it will be a substantial one or not.
And the PS4 business may well be profitable overall, or reach profitability, during that period, even if hardware is losing a little bit...but I still would challenge why this implies an underspecced PS4.

have you seen the new Sony Xperia line? it's very good for the price
Because we aren't simply talking about them being profitable, we are talking about a profit margin that will be higher than every year except 1 in the the dominating PS2 era. And Sony lost a big chunk of cash in the first year the PS2 hit the market, despite the PS1 and PS2 both selling well.but I still would challenge why this implies an underspecced PS4.
I have no doubt they'll try to monetize the living hell out of PSN. But hardware sales for the PS4 will make up a huge chunk of their revenue. Even at break-even, that means the margin on the remaining revenue has to be that much higher to arrive at an 8% total including the hardware revenue. There's just no way to reach that margin on a PS4 that's losing money. Even with a break-even PS4, they would probably need to be selling Nintendo-like levels of 1st-party software to reach a margin like that with such a huge chunk of revenue not producing any returns at all.
They are also way behind. Samsung and LG are going quad-core, Sony just went to dual-core with a S-LCD screen while the others have AMOLED and IPS screens for ages. Should've skipped dual-core if it was gonna take them that long to release one and go straight with a Vita specced phone or at least something similar.Compared to Sampsung Phones and Iphone, it's crap.
They need to copy Iphone as simple as that. Give me Vita phone and I will get it day one

This slide implies it is, but this could just be a future projection. I'm not sure.
Sony will reduce TV portfolio by 40 percent in 2012, look to commercialize OLED and Crystal LED TVs

All the things you mentioned here are a foreign language to Joe Consumer. The Xperia S is specced well behind a bunch of current phones, but is still doing good because most people who buy phones don't care. The people who care about specs are the 1%.
I think what's interesting is that Kaz is directly handling the game and online division.
In addition to refocusing on three successful streams, Sony intends to turn around its ailing TV line

A lot of people here have been buying a lot of sony phones recently since most of the phones here are priced well and they are great value for money.
Surprising and its great to see iphone failing here as compared to rest of the countries.
Vita profits will come soon. The system has yet to receive a price drop and the "defining" game.
Sony new line of Xperia phones are good, though. The Xperia S is the best phone they made in years, in my opinion. Last I heard it's selling pretty well in Japan and Europe.
Wtf? How does Vita bring profit if lowered price means bigger losses? Do you think they will suddenly sell so much Vita software that it covers the losses from hw? And where's the Vita software that sells?Vita profits will come soon. The system has yet to receive a price drop and the "defining" game. Once a price drop to $169.99 hits- you can expect it to fly off the shelves.
Good thing that Sony are releasing an AMOLED phone with screens from their partnership with AOU bearing fruit. Also let's remember that Japan Display Inc. (in which Sony have a 10% stake) will turn on their OLED production in Q1 2013. Technical details about the screens are unknown.
Also they are said to be using Symbian S4 (Pro?) for the LT29i Hayabusa and the Mint (which doesn't have a model number yet). Both are said to come out in early Q3.
Those days aren't ever coming back. The mass market of today is the target of these huge corporations, not those that adore the traditional games of the 90s and early 00s. Sony needs success as fast as they can achieve it, so it's all "gimmicky bullshit" from here on out with Sony.I hope it works out. When Sony was master race of the game world, things just ran smoothly. None of this gimmicky bullshit, just pure gaming non-stop... and the largest, most varied library of games under any roof, still to this day. All at a loss leading price for consumers.

So PS4 is not going to be a another Wii? Phew...
Another Wii?? what's that even mean???
You just reaffirmed what I just said, Sony are way behind the competition. OLED phone in 2013? Samsung had those back in 2010.
Symbian, what is that? Nokia OS? Or do you mean Snapdragon S4?
I didn't say they weren't behind the times, but they are at least jumping on the bandwagon at long last. Snapdragon, Sony don't make Symbian phones, they have at least dropped that dead weight. Got my words mixed up. D:
Just so you know the Sony Xperia S is the fastest selling phone in the UK over the last month that it has been out and Kaz specifically mentioned that they are going to halve the time it takes to develop phones so that they can respond to market needs much faster. That means from 2013 we should get a decent attempt at making a phone that competes properly with Samsung, again I think Sony should look at merging with Toshiba to bring proper foundry space in house and making their laptop lines more competitive it would also allow Toshiba to concentrate on their more profitable industrial goods line. Sony can't compete with Apple and Samsung until they start using their own SoC designs in their phones, stupidly they have and awesome one (Vita) but haven't used it for some unbeknownst reason.
Where did you get this data?
