Skyward Sword with an Xbox 360 Controller

Besides, SS is not something that could only work with motion controls. You can do the full range of motions easy on a gamepad. Dead Island worked really well using the right analogue to attack.

Actually, mapping the controls like this person has would not be enough to finish the game. The sword also tracks to wiimote position even when you are not attacking which is something need for some puzzles.

I might as well join in and say that almost every complaint I have about this game has nothing to do with the controls. Aside from the 'jab' being a bit stubborn, they worked for me fine.

I thought I saw him do that in the video.

The problem with the motion controls in SS is the fact they're counter-intuitive. The game needs you to slowly move the sword around so that it can follow your movements, and when you try a quick slash like you really would with a sword, more often than not the game freaks out and doesn't register what you're doing correctly.

Can you adjust and do it the way the game wants you to? Sure.

Is that fun? Satisfying? Does it enhance the experience? Is it superior to a traditional controller? Absolutely not.

There are other fatal flaws with the game that made me stop playing, some real terrible design choices, but that was the worst of all. Every single combat scenario was painful.

Why all the Tadtones hate? It was easy as shit and didn't take long at all. Nowhere as offensive as the incredibly shitty "Hey we'll take away your sword, add a timer and force you to do some more Tear collecting because we know you absolutely adored it in Twilight Princess" bullshit.
Because it's completely pointless and makes no sense in the context of the game. And I don't like the swimming controls.

hey man, quit taking your anger out on such an awesome game because you suck so much!

I don't know why the lesson to never enter a thread with "Skyward Sword" in the title doesn't sink in for me. By all accounts, it should have by now.

Seriously, this thread turned toxic within the first couple posts. Something about Zelda just brings out the venom in some people.

SS isn't my favorite Zelda, but the hyperbole in here is disappointing.

This is a good point. However, as far as it making the game painful, I would not agree.

I do wish they would have went with how the sword control was originally designed: Exactly like the sword fighting in Wii Sports Resort, 1:1 tracking. This would have allowed the player to have complete control over the sword, rather than selecting an angle and initiating the swipe.

If you can accept the fact you need to control the sword in a way that is completely unlike handling a sword then yeah, it's not awful, but I personally found it infuriating. Every time I moved the sword I had to think about it, because my natural reaction would confuse the technology. The idea of having total control of a sword in a Zelda game is great, but it just isn't possible with current tech :(

Edit: Well, maybe it is, but not the way in which they did it in this game. I can't remember what sword fighting was like in Wii Sports Resort, nor have I used a Move.

Yeah, it is possible. Like you said, not the way they did it in this game. They didn't actually use 1:1 control for the swipes, just the slower movement.

Yeah it's 3am here and my brain is a bit fuzzy! I realised you gave one example in the post I quoted, hence the edit!

I played WSR when it was released but haven't touched it since. All I remember from it is the awesome archery! ^_^

I'm not entirely sure what exactly you were trying to do. When you waggle it, it defaults to pre-determined motions along an 8-way template. It is always effective when you waggle it, because it abandon 1:1 and just does it like a button. Doing a quick slash is the most effective way of doing swordplay in SS. It's what makes it different from Wii Sports Resort.

Not sure what you were doing to make it freak out.

You should try out the swordplay in it if you get the chance. It's a ton of fun just mowing down Mii's in 'showdown'. They really should have went with complete 1:1 in SS...

Yeah, I was disappointed how they made the SS swordplay to be rigged whenever you made a slash instead of being true 1:1 like in WSR.

My sentiments exactly. The amount of exaggeration and closedminded thinking is astounding.

WHY DONT PEOPLE LIKE WHAT I LIKE

But seriously, I didn't have any control qualms outside of the flying, my issues mainly revolved around the game having every flaw of twilight princess and not a single boon of twilight princess.

Sweet, I was wondering when someone would try shoehorning shitty joystick controls into Skyward Sword via Dolphin. The results were just as hilarious as I expected.

You mean I can finally control the character? Why did no one do this until I spent 40 hours suffering through it?!

Skyward Sword wasn't a terrible game but once I beat it I traded it back into Gamestop because I just never see myself playing it again like I would with past Zeldas. I hated the fact that you have to sit up most of the time to play it correctly which sucks for me because I like to game after a long day at work and lay down.

The only problem I had with Skyward Sword's controls were flying and especially swimming. I liked the motion controls with the swordplay.

yeah, it's not perfect but I have a hard time thinking of many games that are. Also surprised to see so much hate for the game in here. it had a couple of annoyances but... wow.

Some people just don't like motion controls. Sucks for them, I say.

I can understand why SS is so polarizing though. It's simultaneously an enormous departure from older zelda games but still retains a lot of the core fundamentals. So it's easy to hate it on multiple levels! It does too many things different and too many things are unchanged! And gamers today have been so conditioned to whiz bang instant reward games where you have explosion after explosion and nonstop action for 10 hrs. SS is a 45hr nuanced epic that is an unbelievably fantastic ride overall but doesn't really travel at the breakneck speed a lot of people have grown accustomed to. It's also as much of a puzzle game as it is an action game, which again, many gamers aren't really interested in. Most would rather just point and shoot.

Whoaaaa, I really want that. Motion controls were one of the main reasons I couldn't get into Skyward Sword. :-(

There are plenty of people who dislike motion controls. The fact that you can't grasp that, and you try to explain it away with other shit, just shows how narrow minded you are.
I prefer the explanation of my superior genetics, but I suppose my narrow mindedness is another possibility.

Combat doesn't involve controlling the character?

I'm not sure if you're purposely being obtuse or what, but you have much less control over the character in combat using a joystick than you do with motion controls (as the video in the OP reiterates.) You would need 3 joysticks just to replicate the amount of control you have with motion plus.

One of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard on GAF. At least add "IMO" for christ's sake.

Cause without the IMO, it's not in his opinion.

PERFECT MODE with Gecko OS codes:

this should be the better of the black bar removal codes since it completely prevents black bars from wanting to show at all.

Having just started Skyward Sword (about 6 hours in) I have to say I'd prefer this. For me, the motion controls to me are a bit boring and cumbersome, they don't really add to the enjoyment of the game.

So an analog stick would basically have to somehow give negative control? I would swing left, Link would go right. I'd stab, he'd slash. I'd slash, he'd slowly move his arm. An analog stick is objectively an improvement.
