Diablo 3 Open Beta starting this weekend

Beta just ended. Can't wait till the 15th.

Defeated Skeleton king with two minutes to spare with Demon Hunter. When I realized I didn´t have much time, I just rushed through thanks to Vault skill and made it :)

All in all it was a very fun beta. Specially when playing multiplayer, really adds a lot.

I really liked DH more than I thought I would. It´s a great class, yet I rank it last of all the classes I played with. Which says a lot about the classes in D3. All of them are just fun to play with, you can´t go wrong.

My main class will be WD followed by Monk, then Barb, then Wizard, then DH.

Crafting was rewarding, I played around with it more and more towards the end of beta. I didn´t look at the merchants until 1 hour to go of the beta(DOH! There were rings to purchase).

Anyway, I got my D3 fix and can wait for release more easily now :)

I was able to get through the game (a few times each) with the Witch Doctor and the Demon Hunter this weekend both level 11 or 12. I found Elective Mode after I beat the Skeleton King for the first time which was a major revelation for me because, before that, I was quite disgruntled. I'm still a little annoyed that you can't just hotkey a few of your active skills and then use your mouse wheel to scroll through them like in Diablo 2 but really it's not too bad. If they should add anything right now I believe they desperately need the equivalent of D2's weapon swap hotkey (W) so that you can swap back and forth between two sets of skills (even if it did incur a cooldown, going through the menu is way too clunky)

I thought both the Witch Doctor and the Demon Hunter were fun. With the Demon Hunter I just permanently bound Mouse3 to Vault and was flipping all over the place, laying traps and shooting the shit of everything. With the Witch Doctor a simple mixture of his Darts and Fire Bats (with Splinter and Dire Bat runes respectively) seemed like the best combo and then using the spiders for group clean-up. Really though, having since looked over their abilities on the wiki I'm sure that will change drastically as I level up.

Oh, and I really love the crafting system. I'm assuming it gets much more complicated later on... with more ingredients than just Simple Essences but even with just that I liked how it basically evoked the Gambling system from D2.

Impressions from the beta now that it's down:

Overall I had a blast. I played the Monk and WD to cap, played the Demonhunter to about level 8 or 9. Beat Leoric on all of them.

Out of the 3, the WD was my favorite. My skill combo was Haunt, Firebats (un-runed), Zombie Dogs (with poison) and the intelligence boosting spirit link. I would run into a pack of mobs, cast the intelligence booster and then proceed to vape things with the firebats. On tougher mobs I would do the same but use haunt to get a dot rolling on them. No need for a cheap autoattack, my dogs and haunt would take care of everything.

I was a bit disappointed in the Demon Hunter, to be honest. His bit seemed to be kiting and using ranged to kill, which didn't really suit my playstyle very well. Maybe he gets better at higher levels.

Overall I'm looking forward to the 15th.

Having been playing the beta since I think November, I STILL can't decide which class I want to main. I'm leaning towards DH since I mostly mained a hunter in WoW and I get the same vibe. But every other class is just as brilliant. I really, really enjoy the wizard and monk as well. Barbarian and WD are also surprisingly fun too. Argh, which one....

I really love that since this is so PvE focused that they can just run WILD with the item bonuses. I was picking up shit with extra gold from mobs, extra exp, freaking Run speed, attack speed, increased magical item find. I mean holy shit. The item bonuses are insane, I cannot wait to see where else it goes. I think I even had something that increased the range from which I could loot gold LOL!

Playing with other people feels more like a race than playing a game. You don't have time to gather and sort weapons, items, craft, sell, carefully choose your skills, take in the story, etc etc. and all the players are just racing to beat the game as fast as possible. Nobody chats either. It takes all the "game" out of it and reduces it to a clicky spam-fest.

Felt like this when playing with people I didn't know. With those I did know I felt more comfortable chatting up and letting them know I'm doing something.

Speaking of loot, I really hope armor and weapons have even better mods than in diablo 2; they're gonna need more depth to balance out for the more shallowness in other departments. How are they going to do + skill mods? Will they have rune mods for specific skills? I'm very curious to see how this plays out.

I finished the beta last night with 3 of my buddies. It was really fun! I played as the wizard and enjoyed it, but I was wondering how the weapons work. Can I wield anything as a wizard? Does he even use weapons? Every time I attack it would ve a spell instead of a sword slash.

Why is the skill system being designed for morons? I can't get over the default set up and elective mode. Why does that even exist?

I'm still on the fence currently. Originally I was flat out against getting it as I knew it would never live up to the monumental legend of Diablo 2 that I have formed in my own brain. That being said I am now generally considering getting it when it comes out. While it will never be D2, it is a pretty damn fun game. The way character progression works was a little weird, but I greatly enjoyed the co-op and if a few of my friends do in fact pick this up, I think I'll be getting it as well to play along side them.

Just about yes. Most spells are based upon weapon damage, so its really down to you. Mine was running around with a flaming sword for a while. :D

After an oh-so brief Beta weekend. Monk is all I expected it to be and more. It runs on my good rig with crappy on-board graphics card, so that is awesome. Will be buying day 1 since it retains what makes Diablo awesome, as well as adding a few fresh touches.

Yeah there's +health and +gold radius bonuses. Kinda replaces light radius I guess!

What I find really interesting about a game such as Diablo is how lots of different people can take completely different things away from each character. How I felt completely unempowered and like I was doing something wrong with the Wizard class yet others feel like gods of destruction. How I feel like a spry, tactical death machine with the Demon Hunter yet others feel like a weak fool.

And really, all this is only when we're forced into sharing the same builds. When we're floating around level 30 and being able to completely change the way these characters work should we so wish, how we're all going to have opinions of each class that are even more wildly divergent.

Such possibilities and playstyle diversity is fascinating to me, and I cannot even begin to imagine the work Blizzard have to do to balance these things.

The diversity of opinions in this thread is fascinating. I think every possible opinion on every single facet of the game is accounted for. And I know these are different people with different opinions, I'm not accusing anyone of being contradictory.

Some people are disappointed with the game but admit it's pretty. Others like the game but admit it's ugly. Some people were looking for more than just Diablo 2.5 and were disappointed they didn't get it. Other people wanted just Diablo 2.5 and were disappointed they didn't get it. Some people like how much the game has changed. Other people like how much the game is the same.

I think every class has been considered overpowered, underpowered and just right. And every class has been mentioned as someone's favorite, and someone else's least favorite.

I don't really know what this says about the game itself, but it's interesting!

Anyone know what added perk playing at higher difficulties provide? Just watched a video where some of the Blizzard people are talking about why this game begins at Nightmare.

And from the sounds of it I don't know how people are going to take their Hardcore characters to Inferno. Good lord.

This link from kyubajin a couple of pages back really does a great job of explaining it.

I seriously hope they have skill+rune specific mods on the items. A good part of any Diablo game is about the loot. Making randomized, rune specific drops is going to keep me in that hamster wheel for a long time!

I can't wait for the amount of this:

iStock_000014734522XSmall-300x199.jpg

that will be happening on May 15th and beyond. Sure, there will still be some valid complaints, but I imagine a lot more crow eating than anything else. Especially having played with Hazaro and others in the extra content that was only available for a weekend before getting patched out.

Dude I bet the guys crying the hardest spend more time with this Beta weekend then any other game they played in the last month anyway ;)

Amount of crow eaten will be huge.

Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
So how many people gave HC a real shot? I felt it was the only way to really play the game. Otherwise it was just too damn easy.

I really wish people would stop calling the game "too easy". It was the first freaking level on normal difficulty!

This is a well thought out and clearly written piece explaining the benefits of the new stat system, skills (though I don't agree with his skillpoint argument) and the fixing of the economy/gold value, how that fixes the problem with farming and how blacksmithing fits in all this.

In general, it just sheds light on the lessons learnt in D2 and how the changes in D3 address those issues.

Yeah? My Diablo asked me to click on things and make them explode.
You really don't get that? You don't get how that would be appealing?

Played for about 8 hours. Now I get what the fuss is all about. What an awesome game.

For those that bought the game off battle.net, can you preload the game yet?

Better loot. But added resistances and whatnot to monsters in the higher difficulties also means you need to figure out a build and it's less click-to-win than Normal.

I bought it today after the beta ended and I'm downloading it now :)

I guess what I mean is, it didn't really seem like there was that much character customization during the beta. You just unlock skills and variations of those skills and are free to change between them at any given point in time.

Are there "talent trees"? And where have runes gone?

Will there actually be "builds"?

It seemed like you just unlocked more options as you level up.

Yes, there will be builds.

A build in Diablo 3 will consist of 5 things:
1) Skill choices (which 6 you will use - that is the core of your build
2) Supporting skill choices (which passives you take to make sense with that core)
3) Designing your gear around your build (what stats to prefer over what, which items you go that improve certain skills compared to a general raw damage increase instead, etc)
4) Gemming around your skill choices (around your core) - in Inferno+ characters, the gems that you use will worth SHITTON of money, so it is not child's play
5) If Blizzard somehow makes your hirelings just 1-2 percent relevant to Inferno gameplay, then you will need to gear/"talent" them up specifically for your build.

I see, thanks for this answer, makes a lot more sense now.

I preloaded but all I see is the Diablo 3 beta folder. Am I missing something? How do I know if the game preloaded successfully? I forgot check the destination folder when I preloaded.

So because the beginning of the game is basically tard-proof, I'm not supposed to call them out on it? Give me a fucking break.

But yeah, I fully expect for it to get tougher.

After the Beta I am even more hyped for this game, I am itching to play the game right now, I can't stop thinking about Diablo 3. The customization is still there for example with the Barbarian you can choose 6 out of 22 skills, and with the 5 runes for each 22 skills it changes the skills further making the 22 skills into 110 skills, so you can choose 6 out of 110 skills, and thats not including passives, gems, weapons and armor for further customization. After watching Witch Doctor I am hyped for that class, but I will stick to Barb first, then probably go for Wizard or Witch Doctor next.

It's going to be a long 3 weeks.

As a fan of Diablo 2, me and my friend (also a D2 fan) were not impressed by the beta. The combat was boring, the way you get one pre-assigned skill per level makes it seem dumbed down, and everything else felt exactly the same as it did in Diablo 2. Someone on another forum said that "everything" was improved from D2 but I did not see that at all.
