The Wii U Speculation Thread V: The Final Frontier

Would you guys rather have Mark Rein, Gabe Newell, Ken Levine, Hideo Kojima, or Michel Ancel come on stage during the presser for a "surprise announcement"?

Are they actually announcing something or is it a non-announcement like EA's Riccitiello last E3?

In terms of just specific games, Ancel (BG&E2), Kojima (MGS5), or Levine (Infinite) would all be great but I would probably go with Gabe because of any future Valve games coming out on the platform plus what it might mean for Wii U online capabilities.

Oh, sorry, that's my cue. Here's my summary of the news for today:

Edit: The "Free Space" is post #1484, wherein an apparently old trailer for a Ghost Recon game which had rather nice touchscreen functionality was reposted as a reminder

This is generally the equivalent to politics, where people go "If Politician X becomes president, I'm moving to Canada!". It is rare that people follow through on this sort of threat.

Thank you kind sir.

I definitely feel the $99 package is a test. And I agree that the payment option will be the most likely choice. Along with increasing specs, it's pretty much a given they are going to include Kinect with it so they are going to have a tough time keeping the cost down to a reasonable target without a substantial loss. But either way I would like to see how the payment option affects their console margin.

Here's what I wonder: I do not like the idea of leased (or something similar) gaming systems, just as I don't like with cars (or houses — screw this stupid mortgage I have!). But is my bias towards Nintendo further enhancing my dislike for the concept? If Nintendo was first to this idea, would I be more supportive of it, or do I just generally think it's a bad idea on principle, even if it was an Iwata original?

kojima. Would love for the next big MGS title to make its way on the nintendo console. I know it'll be on Sonys, probably MS as well whenever it comes. But he best not leave em out.

Out of those, Gabe. But I'd prefer it to be Yasumi Matsuno.

I'd prefer Shigesato Itoi, if only to see the supernerds typing up posts consisting solely of long strings of random alphanumeric characters.

Clarification: I'm a supernerd too (but just not for this series yet), so I can poke a little fun at the group.

For me I said in that thread that I like the idea and hope MS retains it for Xbox 3 and that's despite any bias I may have. Though the extent of my bias goes no further than preferring to buy a Nintendo console over the others, while not wanting any of them to fail by their own possibly inept decisions. So I guess it could be argued that part of my support of it comes from providing an option that hopefully helps the console do well.

As a political strategist, I'd say Gabe.

But my heart says Ancel to announce BG&E2. I think I'd tear-up that (a) it's happening and (b) it's happening on the U.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Would you guys rather have Mark Rein, Gabe Newell, Ken Levine, Hideo Kojima, or Michel Ancel come on stage during the presser for a "surprise announcement"?

Ken Levine because I would be able to buy his Wii U game at launch. Seriously, a game with that much depth in the lineup means you can afford to have your first party 'M' rated fair, ie Eternal Darkness, slip into the spring of 2013.

About the x*360 speculation. I really have a hard time believing the Wii U will end up closer to the 360 than to the "720" successor. One, Nintendo is building this from the ground up like they did with GCN. They are going to squeeze as much performance per dollar as they can get with today's available technology. And two, Microsoft and Sony only have an extra year to build their boxes. They won't have access to dramatically more modern chipsets.

My speculation:

Wii U .. 5x 360
Xbox3 .. 7x 360
PS4 .. 6x 360

But putting aside x* units, I expect Wii U to have 75% the real world performance of the new Xbox, while Sony's machine will be around 90%.

DF said the same thing about prominent developers saying the Wii U is worse than 360 in some aspects. People expecting 2x 360 or more are nuts.

DF has only been trying to justify their original analysis from last E3. They've put forth no effort to obtain new info on Wii U. The only developer they refer to was someone they talked to back in the Project Cafe days (DF's own words).

so would retro doing it though!

Definitely Irrational.

IGN: Do you have a reaction to Nintendo's announcement, about the Wii U? I saw you were in the video they rolled.

Ken Levine: Just to be clear, there are no plans. I'm not saying it can't happen, but we have no plans to do any games for that platform. There are things about it that, as a core gamer, really appeal to me, that have nothing to do with Fruit Ninja. I have nothing against Fruit Ninja, I respect all kinds of games, I love all kinds of games, there are just certain kinds of things that are more suited to my taste. There are some things, as a core gamer, as a guy who likes lying in bed playing... I've always had to sacrifice that core gaming experience when I lie in bed playing games. We're now getting to a place with Vita and what Nintendo's doing where that's not necessarily going to be the case, where you can play full-on hardcore games in bed with the lights out while your wife's asleep. I like that a lot. That means a lot to me. On the airplane? That means a lot to me as a core gamer, that you've got two sticks. That's so important to me. The fact that the Wii U has got two sticks... I feel it's like... It's a great year for the core coming back and saying, okay, have your touch screens, have your motion control, we'll try to make that work, and if you can pull that off it'll be really good. But I want to have my cake and eat it too. I think these experiences are starting to allow that to happen. I love my iPad, but I mostly work on it, I don't play a lot of games on it, because I'm not into that style or form factor, that three-minute experience.

I still sit at the 3-4x overall performance. Some areas could considered lower than those margins but overall still feel comfortable

Not actually that important

If the annoucement is meaty, Gabe.
If it doesn't end up being a backstab a la RE4, Kojima.

Man, you're going to be soooo disapponted...

This DB talk is kind of annoying. I need a nice rumor or some news to offset my annoyance.
It's staring right at you. Obviously there's a new DBZ game coming to Wii U, it will all make sense at E3.
Agreed. Seeing the reaction to a choice of $499 or $199 and $15/mo for two years would be something I would be very interested to see from a business standpoint.
Hasn't worked too well in the tablet market...but the subsidized prices suck ass there so it's not really a fair comparison. It's like $399+fat ass data contract for some random Android one...or an iPad for $399 with no contract. Tough choice! Really depends how much the new console costs them and how much they're willing to eat short term. I figure $199+contract is the highest they can go cause at $250-300 or whatever they'd be going straight up against the Wii U (assuming it's somewhere in the $300s).
Would you guys rather have Mark Rein, Gabe Newell, Ken Levine, Hideo Kojima, or Michel Ancel come on stage during the presser for a "surprise announcement"?
Rein or Newell just cause either one would cause a meltdown here.

I expect the difference to not matter at all to most people. What they'll notice more is if this or that big game they want is on one system and not the other.
DF said the same thing about prominent developers saying the Wii U is worse than 360 in some aspects. People expecting 2x 360 or more are nuts.
While other devs have said those devs may suck. (also I have no clue who/what DF is)

Fair enough. I see the advantages of it to the consumer, but I'm personally a penny pincher. I'd rather spend up front if it means the total cost is 10% less. And it's usually a lot better than 10% less in this sort of circumstance. I have no problem with the option of this sort of monthly cost existing, but I worry that it may lead to me eventually not getting the option to buy it the way I want to.

Hmm, Kojima is a pretentious goof, but then again I love MGS4, which is Kojima at his most pretentious goofiness.

Gabe is the savior of PC gaming and a jovial Santa of sorts who brings tidings of greatly discounted games. Bulletstorm for five dolla. FIVE DOLLA. HOLLA FOR DAT FIVE DOLLA BALLA.

Ken Levine radiates verile sexual charm. I question my heterosexulity in his five-o-clock shadow. Plus, BioShock. <3

So yeah, any of those three. If Sakurai descended from heaven and took the form of a human again to unveil a CGI target render trailer of Smash Bros. confirming Palutena, Ridley and Little Mac as characters, that would be the bee's knees and the cat's meow.

EDIT: Irrational-developed Metroid could be sweet. Remember, Levine games don't have cutscenes! (Well, they barely do, anyway.) So no "baby baby baby" fiasco.

If that Mario game based on those screens in the DF article looks like that and isn't 1080p and 60fps, something has gone very wrong with Wii U hardware.

There are people here who actually like the idea of consoles having a cell phone-esque contract?

In my opinion, that's the absolute worst possible place for the industry to go.

Its a very bad idea simply because people will not consistently pay monthly fees for two separate electronic devices (phones and the hypothetical video game console).

It's the only way they'll ever release a game console anywhere near as powerful as gaming PC's at time of release. People who only care about power / graphic quality should be rooting for that.

All I know is that every new contract and contract renewal better come with a free warranty plan that lasts the entire length of the contract...because having your console break but still being required to pay XBL fees would just plain suck.

I can see the ads now..." Can't get credit approval for Xbox Live? Credit score lower than a noob's K/D ratio? Wii have a solution for U. Nintendo Network. Where being economically viaible won't stop your call of duty"

It would be hilarious if bad/low credit dictates how much gamers pay for the next Xbox.

You don't get that with cell phones, but people still buy iPhones on 2 year contract with but a 90 day warranty...

And in the case of Microsoft a very long warranty (well you know "twice bitten and all that")

now if MS were to charge $20 a month and that included 3 paid apps of your choice, then I'd might be ok. $20 covering my XBl, Hulu+, Netflix and HBO GO then its tempting.

EDIT: or give me 2 apps and the potion to customize my dashboard and not see ads for apps I don't want to see or use

Since E3 is near, I want to try something with you guys. Me and my friends created a google document for E3 predictions, where people can post what would be announced. I'm thinking about creating an doc just gaf. Seems easier then using a bingo card :p Anyone up for it?

Yeah, I realize how unlikely it is, that's one of the big reasons hearing about subscription contracts worries me.

For me it's that plus them selling the thing at like $350 with a contract or $800 without, and it only being maybe 3X Wii U at best.

I just can't imagine they're that batshit crazy but you never know.

Then again I think XBL fees are really stupid too so you never know I guess.

Pretty much. While my preference would have been a more moderate hardware jump, the payment plan may be the best concession to make the power jump work.

The one MS is "testing" has a two year warranty.

That seems to be exactly what the $15/mo will include.

Would be interesting to see how much MS is willing to defer payment on. I guess they have enough but I don't see it being a industry standard since it prevents HW companies from collecting on cash for 2 years. 2nd, you have to sign up for service, which either has to be done in store or when you power on. Imagine a screen preventing you from playing a game because you didn't sign up for Xbox live gold?

Although, I wholeheartedly support that idea for Gaf gold and dirty junior members.

ugg, another reason to hate that idea.
