If you live in a large city, there's quite a bit of good stuff. Especially in New York.

only new york ever gets anything. unless you want to throw seattle in the mix for the hq and la in there for e3 or something.

edit: although they did kick off the zelda concerts in north america here in los angeles. i guess that's something.

Nintendo's community engagement is pathetic, quite frankly. Especially considering its massive, loyal, rabid fan base.

I'd love to see them build their sense of community and community engagement with online maneuvers. It would be them killing two checkbox birds with one stone.

Ideally:
- Club Nintendo integration
- Nsider Forums
- a dedicated channel similar to "Let's Play," where Nintendo employees, developers, or other invitees play games live with commentary
- a preview channel (somewhat detailed in my post above)
- a Counselors' Corner channel, devoted to helping gamers in difficult gaming situations
- etc.

There are so many easy little things that Nintendo can do to address their community and online issues simultaneously. And by going directly to the community, they get to bypass lots of the *&#%s in gaming media.

The only problem with that is that it restricts the audience to those who already have Wii U. They should be better leveraging social media and community building so they can touch potential customers as well.
Ahh.. true. More tweeting and Facebooking and FourSquaring, I guess. I tweet once in a while, but otherwise my social media exposure is very limited. But you have a good point..

Wait... you KNOW more on PS4, or we have more substantial hardware leaks about it that can't be confirmed or denied? How's that work exactly when the hardware is at least a year and a half til it's out? That'd be like knowing the WiiU spec prior to E3 2011.

Nintendo Channel was a good idea and works under this principle, except that it was totally optional and didn't actually work unless you were actively in the channel.

I think that the social channels like Everybody Votes and Check Mii Out, coupled with Nintendo Channel, were sort of a precursor, a testing ground, for the next phase. We saw a bit of it with the 3DS, I assume they're just going to vastly expand upon that.

I believe BG has said before he knows the target specs for the PS4 already.
Which makes sense.

What do you know about PS4, bgassassin? I haven't been keeping up with the Sony and MS side of next gen at all. Less of a leap than expected?

Well they do have twitters and facebooks and the Nintendo Directs and their own YouTube channel and all that.

Yep, and it's all pretty much awful. It's just PR speak mostly.

Nintendo Direct is a step in the right direction, but compared to NCL the NoA presentations have been pretty blah.

Really? I think if you want community engagement NoA's is better. Sure, NoA doesn't bring as many announcements, but you get developer interviews and stuff like that. NCL's is just pretty much a schedule of games with trailers.

Nintendo is very good at interacting with their fans. ust not in the traditional way.

Take Iwata Asks for example.

I don't think it's as bad as this to be honest. It could be better, yes, but it's not all that bad. I'm following NoA on twitter and it's pretty good.

I'm thinking they can do something similar to Nintendo Direct through the Wii U so people who wouldn't normally know about ND will be able to tune in and see what's going on.

That's because New York is best city. :D

Wish they had a Nintendo store here in SF :(

i've only been there once. we stayed at a place in queens and played mario party 2 on a big screen tv. the next day we did the tourist stuff.

weird place, but not too bad. i'm used to the more open spaces out in southern california. stayed in san francisco for the first time about a month ago and it felt like new york city, or like the film version of new york city.

Alright, because I'm bored and I want to take a break from studying, I'll do one of these:

1) Price? $300

2) Release date? November 2012

3) Bullshit xbox360-based Multiplier Equivalent? x1.75

4) Nintendo conference surprise(s)? Retro is developing a Starfox reboot. Nintendo makes a big deal about BLOPSII coming to Wii U. Eternal Darkness II is real. Console-tied account system available day 1, ambitious social features such as in-game video chat and spectator modes. Communities become a system wide feature. App store is planned but wont be there day 1, also seems very ambitious. All launch titles available on U-shop day 1. Conference ends with a surprise hardcore exclusive from a major 3rd party developer. SSB4 is teased at the roundtable that night

5) Predict Miyamoto's role/costume/appearance context in this year's show. Will only be on stage to demo Pikmin 3

6) Any special MS or Sony predictions? All 360s will now be bundled with kinect, new 360 sku that acts as a dedicated set top box is revealed, service plans with cable companies are announced. Sony's conference has a major focus on western developed vita games. A single game that emulates the Upad between Vita and PS3 will be announced

7) You know we're going to hear some, umm, interesting excuses from third parties. So.. what'll be your favorite? We're going to wait and see how other games perform before committing major support

8) Any special E3 plans/arrangements of your own? Taking off from work? Skipping a final exam? I'll be on vacation, suckas!

9) Your favorite bullshit gaming media critique of Nintendo's performance at E3 this year? "Nintendo had an impressive showing but no one cares because everyone is waiting for the unannounced PS4/XB3"

10) Your own predicted complaint/peeve/angering issue regarding Nintendo's E3 performance this year? No FE localization. RAGE

I'd love to see them build their sense of community and community engagement with online maneuvers. It would be them killing two checkbox birds with one stone.

Ideally:
- Club Nintendo integration (can't argue with that)
- Nsider Forums (they had forums, once upon a time... they are the reason I fled to IGN, because even THEY were better)
- a dedicated channel similar to "Let's Play," where Nintendo employees, developers, or other invitees play games live with commentary (they kinda already do that with some of the videos on the Nintendo Channel)
- a preview channel (somewhat detailed in my post above) (Once again... Nintendo Channel)
- a Counselors' Corner channel, devoted to helping gamers in difficult gaming situations
- etc. (isn't that what the internet is for?)

There are so many easy little things that Nintendo can do to address their community and online issues simultaneously. And by going directly to the community, they get to bypass lots of the *&#%s in gaming media.

Check the bolded.

The problem isn't that they don't have what you're asking for, because they have it on Wii. It's that they aren't aggressive in their delivery of the information.

What Nintendo needs is things like:

Pushing data on recent releases to the UI home screen with links to trailers/demos to get more people looking into and buying different games (maybe a Genius-type thing where it tracks what you've played and makes targeted recommendations)

Direct social network integration, so that certain games can have more exposure by viral marketing ("Oh, why's everyone I know playing this? Lemme check it out..." It's how shit like Angry Birds gets so popular, why not put it to work for console gaming?)

Using Nintendo Network to pose questions about features and games directly to the user base instead of using small sample data from market research firms

Etc.

We have more input to give to them than they would have to give to us beyond release dates and such. It's better to know the audience you're delivering to than it is to take random swipes at it with things like blogs.

Some of the stuff they do.. but like a lot of things.. never across the board

I remember when they released those awesome videos of the staff playing New Super Mario Bros Wii.. that type of stuff you can do post release to keep interest, and the game is already out so don't need to worry about spoiling too much

I think the Iwata Asks has been terrific, but again we only seem to get videos of those during e3. It would be nice if became a fixture of their network.

The Nintendo Week was a step in the right direction, but needed more interactions with fans. Think the only thing they ever did was ask people on line at NWS questions from time to time.

Their Twitter/Facebook presence is... laughable.. though I guess once in a blue they had Iwata/Reggie "host" the account. They should do it more often, and actually turn it into a Q/A type deal.

I think after the 2006 E3's success where Nintendo tried that "successful-conference-followed-by-major-roundtable-reveal" formula, they might try this little stunt again this time around. The extra boost of "nail, meet coffin"-type comments and impressions that they got in the hype-osphere was incredible to witness and feel.

But I wonder: would it be Smash.. or something else?

It'll probably be for Smash, but I think it'll be more like the roundtable where they talked about the Skyward Sword concept art than the SSBB reveal in 2006

I doubt we'll see Smash. If they have something to show I hope it surprises all of us.

I wonder... if they will really go out of the box.. and have another post-conference conference that is focused on a key 3rd party partner.

Idea:
implement this "constantly-in-touch" principle in the form of a channel (or multiple channels) on the Wii U. Preview videos, music samples, developer and artist interviews..

Put such a channel front and center, pre-installed on the console so that it can't be missed. Don't be afraid to feature third-party games. Update it daily. It'd be a pretty solid idea, and would probably go a long way in helping sales.

{I'm not crazy about online stuff, but I am trying to embrace it to some small extent. :) }

For a start, videotape every Iwata Asks session and release it online (preferably with new gameplay footage diced in), making it easily accessible through the Wii U.

Maybe integrate Smash Dojo as a native app when the hype machine for the next SSB rolls around.

I'd love to see them build their sense of community and community engagement with online maneuvers. It would be them killing two checkbox birds with one stone.

They kind of already do some of that on the Wii though. The Nintendo Channel is regularly updated with trailers and commentary. And you have to admit that Club Nintendo is already a better reward system than anything that Sony or Microsoft has (unless you really like PS+). They just need to beef that stuff up.

Absolutely true. I'd just like to see it all neatly available when I turn on my console. They already have inroads toward this end, like you say in the form of the Nintendo Channel.. but I'd like to see even more!

(and Club Nintendo friggin' rocks - here's hoping that this year's Platinum goodie is something worthwhile!)

I think they now use this as a "1up" for the conference.

Wait so should we be worried that the Wii U will be the "least powerful" of the next gen consoles? Will the gap be smaller this time? Is it barely noticeable?

That would be a starting point, but as BD1 said, it would limit those that could view it. I don't think that Nintendo has been terrible at this because they have put together stuff like the Nintendo Show 3D, Nintendo Direct and they post things on Facebook. But it's all so spread out compared to the other two manufacturers. I'm sure that they'd have more than enough news to run a proper blog for Nintendo products.

Nintendo's community engagement is pathetic, quite frankly. Especially considering its massive, loyal, rabid fan base.

Exactly! They have the most loyal fan base in gaming, but they really aren't taking advantage of that. Something like an official Nintendo blog could really help with bringing more attention to third party titles, specifically the exclusives and Wiiware/e-shop titles. Nintendo can be stubborn at times, but they've shown that they can adapt if it could really benefit them. So hopefully we'll see a less closed off Nintendo in the future. They've already taken some steps in that direction.

The gap should be phenomenally smaller. But more important is that the fundamental architectural features of the gpus will be pretty much the same this time around, so devs won't have to reinvent the wheel to port their games now.

There's zero doubt it'll be weakest of next gen and the difference will be clearly noticeable. However, the gap should be considerably smaller than it was this gen, and cross platform porting will (hopefully) be possible.

1) Price?

$349 for just the hardware & $379 with a voucher to download a
launch title from the eshop

2) Release date?

November 4th (beats Halo 4 to retail as well as in time for COD

3) Bullshit xbox360-based Multiplier Equivalent?

Based of IQ of 1st party titles 3-4x; based of specs 2.5x

4) Nintendo conference surprise(s)

A exclusive 3rd party title from a big western studio
]Retro developed 3DS title
Quarterly episodic DD release of a key Nintendo franchise
Sizzle reel of all 3rd party titles not talked about due to NDAs, so relieving everyone who watches it will have to sign NDAs
MT Framework 3.0
Kinect like functionality from the DRC
Return of Mario Paint

5) Predict Miyamoto's role/costume/appearance context in this year's show

Pikmin and new IP

6) Any special MS or Sony predictions?

PSVita/PS3 connectivity push
More Kinect titles no one asked for or cares about
Gears preview for next Xbox

7) You know we're going to hear some, umm, interesting excuses from third parties. So.. what'll be your favorite?

"We don’t see people wanting to have a console experience on tablets and similar devices"

]8) Any special E3 plans/arrangements of your own? Taking off from work? Skipping a final exam?

Does waking up early count?

Since it has been discussed in another thread, I'll go ahead and mention that in December I talked about them though as some of you know how I post I don't make it obvious.

Just focus on the tech specs as really most of the other stuff is just "fluff", and to be more specific as of last year it's 4 cores and 18CUs.

Phew thanks guys. Burnt Pork's remark saying "full leap" got me worried. As long as it was like last gen where the diferences where varying, I'm good.

And I'm not saying you meant to be all gloomy and doomy BP :)

EDIT: Dammit, man you just did it again BP.

Ah. XD I thought YOU thought I just meant the Sega PSN/XBLA/PC/Wii U game which I did see. So sorry. :p

Edit: Can't find it.. PM me the link please. :)

Haha. I was going by what antonz said.

Full leap is accurate. Now that we personally have more info, looking back, Gearbox's "stop gap" comment was probably the most accurate description of Wii U by a third party that I remember.

Nov 18th

3) Bullshit xbox360-based Multiplier Equivalent?
It will be said to be roughly 2x-3x as powerful.

4) Nintendo conference surprise(s)?
Retro's new project.
Nintendo's internal project which is a new IP that uses the tablet.
A mini-game collection.
A decent number of eShop titles though in a sizzle reel on their website.

5) Predict Miyamoto's role/costume/appearance context in this year's show.
He will discuss the potential of the device. Before showing how Mario works with the tablet.

6) Any special MS or Sony predictions?
MS will reveal a new entry in the Gears of War franchise.
And playable demo of Ryse.
Sony will hype up some known characters inclusion in PSASBR. And get Crash in

7) You know we're going to hear some, umm, interesting excuses from third parties. So.. what'll be your favorite?
My "favorite" will of course. They will wait and see if an audience for their game exists on the Wii U instead of tasting the water themselves.

8) Any special E3 plans/arrangements of your own? Taking off from work? Skipping a final exam?
Same as last year, set up an IRC chat on our website so hopefully my Twitter timeline isn't being spammed to heck

9) Your favorite bullshit gaming media critique of Nintendo's performance at E3 this year?Whatever the GiantBomb crew comes up with

10) Your own predicted complaint/peeve/angering issue regarding Nintendo's E3 performance this year?
After the show, they'll be a ton of interesting games and videos on the website.
"Why wasn't this shown at the conference!"

I don't care. I just want same 3rd party games available on the Wii U that are on the Xbox 720 and PS4.

That year headstart will be crucial to this. If it has the install base that cant be ignored, and with specs that wont require a separate team and budget to actually develop, they should come.

Think about it this way: If the Wii U is 2x the current gen & people say it isn't much of an advance & PS4 is 2x the Wii U, then it can't be much of an advance over that either.

looks like it bodes well enough for the wiiU if those predictions come close to reality.

Aaaand now I'm depressed.

I'd be okay with your analysis, BG, but its just the fact that we have to hear YET AGAIN: "Nintendo behind yet again", "Shit Graphics", " Not for the hardcore"...etc. This gen drives me nuts with all of the finger pointing at hardware.

I could very well go insane next gen if I see more disparaging comments about power, specifically the Wii U's.
