Lets hope for something, I mean Microsoft had tos-link on its multi-out cables.
Would suck if all I could get was stereo-sound because the only way to get better sound formats is to buy a new receiver that support hdmi-input for sound.
As I just wrote, even with Toslink, you would still be limited to stereo. Digital stereo, but stereo nevertheless.

You really have a problem. You tend to make definite statements about things you do not know.
This is Rockstar we're talking about. GTA6 will probably barely manage 30FPS on the next XBox. Plus, it'll probably be heavily CPU reliant, and everything is pointing to Wii U having a CPU in the same league as the 360's.

Anyone think Wuhu Island might be pre-loaded on the Wii U hardware?

I know Miyamoto said before he sees it as a character in itself..where lots of different gameplay types could take place (including RPG's and the like).

It could be a good way of pushing the eshop if they released different genres of games that all took place on the island.

Nintendo hasn't been about censorship since ESRB took the burden off their shoulders. They wouldn't have developed/produced Conker's Bad Fur Day, Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, etc. GCN had nudity in Dave Mira's BMX XXX, PS2 didn't. Nintendo only censors their own stuff when ESRB forces them to for a rating they want, like green blood to get an E rating for OoT.

If Rockstar wanted to put GTA on WiiU without Nintendo having to moneyhat them like crazy they'd love it.

I find it funny that folks still bring-up Nintendo's 1980s and 1990s transgressions in this area as though the Nintendo of that era is the same Nintendo as this era. For starters, the Nintendo of this era is in no position to be making those kind of control-freak maneuvers that the much more powerful Nintendo of the past era was capable of.

Wuhu Island should be Nintendo's version of PS Home.

HDMI has been standard on receivers for 5 years now, I don't think it's realistic to expect to be able to fully take advantage of 2012 video game hardware using relatively ancient receivers.

The annoying thing about Animal Crossing is that it could look stunning visually (I'm thinking of stuff like Blue Dragon) with all the cute character designs in great detail and colour with great effects to add to the atmosphere but you know that it'll look just like the N64 version but at higher res.

Animal Crossing contains everything that's frustrating and hateful about Nintendo :-(

Once again you are talking about things you do not know. Where do you get this idea that the Wii U's CPU is in the same league as the Xbox 360's?

Nintendo will have to moneyhat, though. The main reason for wanting to support a console at launch is to build up a fan base on it, and let's not kid ourselves; there's no chance in hell that Wii U will be able to run the next-gen GTA games acceptably.

What are you expecting GTA6 to look/run like? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the fourth game cost like 100 million to make? Rockstars probably releasing the game after every players entered the field and who's to say the other two won't have slow starts or that wii u won't have a more avid and diverse base by then. If the next game is built with scalability in mind, and the wii u likely supporting most modern shaders why wouldn't it be able to run the game? It may not be able to handle the game at 1080p with high-end GPU levels of detail, but certainly at 720p/30fps.

I think Animal Crossing should play that role. Achievements unlock new furniture etc, plus they can sell DLC rather than bring out a new AC game.

Put AC on Wuhu Island. Wuhu Island is the main Hub, like the City on the Wii, and each village is on a separate island around wuhu island. From your Hub you can fly, swim, jetski or dive to any island on your friendlist. If you're banned from one island or parental controls deny it, you'll be eaten by sharks. If you're flying, you'll be shot down by flying sharks with laser eyes.

I'm still not convinced about GTA V on Wii U. Hell, I'm not convinced which third party titles will appear on Wii U, except for the announced ones and Black Ops 2.

It is however the same with TVs though. 1080p TVs have pretty much been a standard for the last years, but yet they include outputs on consoles that will allow people to use older TVs as well. Things could have changed since last year's E3, so who know if something has been added to WiiU since then.

My source is my ass!
Loosely related to Wii U, we had a few days ago on a french channel the first diffusion of the short-movie Ghost Recon Alpha, filmed to accompany the release of the next Ubi Ghost Recon Future Soldier. It's depicting the setting of the franchise rather well, IP that we'll saw on Wii U.

It's big-budgeted (but classical), we can see visors/head-mounted display, drones, tablets, maps, etc., the features we will have on Ghost Recon Online.

1) Price? $349-€349

2) Release date? Late October 2012

3) Bullshit xbox360-based Multiplier Equivalent? x4

4) Nintendo conference surprise(s)? Eternal Darkness and F-Zero

5) Predict Miyamoto's role/costume/appearance context in this year's show. I'd say Olimar or a Pikmin

6) Any special MS or Sony predictions? Microsoft will further increase services on XBL, all of which will never come to the european Live service. Sony will probably finally show off some Vita Games and the Last of Us will blow people away, and shut up a lot of people who think the WiiU won't be able to display amazing graphics.

7) You know we're going to hear some, umm, interesting excuses from third parties. So.. what'll be your favorite? We are definetly interested, but we are invested too heavily in the AAAA business, so the WiiU and it's unconventional ideas don't fit our model. ... We would have to really take advantage of the unique capabilities... oh fuck it, we just don't give a shit

8) Any special E3 plans/arrangements of your own? Taking off from work? Skipping a final exam? Luckily I will have time that day, so I'm free to indulge in E3 madness

9) Your favorite bullshit gaming media critique of Nintendo's performance at E3 this year? "Nintendos aim to please both the hardcore and casuals felt flat as they seemed to have no idea that they should be on IOS since 2010."

10) Your own predicted complaint/peeve/angering issue regarding Nintendo's E3 performance this year? Retro Studios being a no show, or relegated to work on some of Nintendos lower tier IPs.[/QUOTE]

To understand the GTA situation, think about the money Rockstar can make.

As in, think about the money they will make from a franchise that size in a given period over launch.

This is what Nintendo would have to match, or exceed, to secure any kind of exclusivity. They'd have to match what the game would make on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for, say, a month or two at launch. Because that is what Rockstar would make otherwise. It's not in their interest to give Nintendo any kind of exclusivity agreement unless Nintendo is matching the money they could make.

And that kind of money is so insane it's just not worth it. Every cent would be better spent on investing in new games from other independent studios. It cost Microsoft $50,000,000 for timed exclusivity of two DLC packs.

For comparison, here are some game budgets:
God of War 3: $44,000,000
Uncharted: $20,000,000
Killzone 2: $45,000,000
Crysis: $22,000,000
Assassin's Creed 2: $24,000,000

Nintendo could make one or two big budget games for the price it would cost them for any timed GTA V exclusivity. It's madness and if they did it they're fucking idiots.

I thought MS even paid more...(in my head there was something around 80,000,000$)

For sure that is an insane looking amount of money we are talking about.

BUT, imo its still the best way for Nintendo to try to make a good deal with Rockstar about GTA and if its only about showing the gamerworld that they care about the core audience.

Nintendo always spends a lot of money for some 'shit', so why not this time for something that is worth it.
I would love to see them moneyhatting Rockstar (or make good deals) and other developers as well instead of seeing another 100 games like "pet shop farmboy", "kuddle my teddy" or "swim with my duck"....

Anyway I'm sure GTA will come to WiiU....

5) Predict Miyamoto's role/costume/appearance context in this year's show.

6) Any special MS or Sony predictions? Microsoft will continue being casual/multimedia oriented, their presentation will be a disappointment but contain one decent surprise. Sony will have no surprises as everyting will be leaked but The Last Story and God of War will look great as will their new VIta titles which still won't sell.
7) You know we're going to hear some, umm, interesting excuses from third parties. So.. what'll be your favorite? Wii U is a AAA console at best, we only specialise in iO2 casual fodder or AAAAAAAAA+++ titles on proper consoles

8) Any special E3 plans/arrangements of your own? Taking off from work? Skipping a final exam? Nope, I'll enjoy watching the Nintendo conference at 6PM and be horrified if the MS one is as bad as last year. I'm relieved I'll miss Sony as it'll be twice as long as i should although Tretton is one of the few US gaming execs who doesn't seem like an arsehole.

9) Your favorite bullshit gaming media critique of Nintendo's performance at E3 this year? "Nintendo still won't release Mario games on mobile devices and Wii U has sub 360 games, they don't use as many of the shaders or the wi-fis so they're doomed."

10) Your own predicted complaint/peeve/angering issue regarding Nintendo's E3 performance this year? Reggiw will be annoying, there won't be an ethernet socket and the horsepower will ultimately be a bit disappointing

2) Release date?
October 2012 Japan, November 2012 rest of World

3) Bullshit xbox360-based Multiplier Equivalent?
x4

4) Nintendo conference surprise(s)?
Return of old and semi-forgotten IPs (Eternal Darkness and probably Startropics). Some kind of MMO.

5) Predict Miyamoto's role/costume/appearance context in this year's show.
He will be dressed as a Mii with his own Mii's face in a mask.

6) Any special MS or Sony predictions?
MS: KinectKinectKinectKinectMorePayServicesInXBLKinectKinectKinectKinect
Sony: "Hey guys, this whole bunch of new stuff like this tablet and this fighting game are TOTALLY not copied from Nintendo"

8) Any special E3 plans/arrangements of your own?
Same as last 2 years: liveblogs at work. Will watch videos in decent quality at home.

9) Your favorite bullshit gaming media critique of Nintendo's performance at E3 this year?
Same as always, gaming "journalism" (I refuse to put those two words together without quotes) being the bunch of spoiled and biased-by-advertisement-in-their-webs manbabies they've always been.

10) Your own predicted complaint/peeve/angering issue regarding Nintendo's E3 performance this year?
I'll probably be mad at the once-again incompetence at attempting to differentiate the WiiU from Wii. I'll choke a bitch if they don't change the name because that will cost them another 3DS confusion, 2 whole years later, meaning they didn't learn dog shit.

It's still not worth it. Rockstar's asking price would be too high and Nintendo would reap minimal rewards. Nintendo's best bet is to try and get the game on the system, period, assuming it doesn't cost them an arm.

You should only spend money so far. No matter how good something might sound, sometimes it's better to tell people to fuck off and do something different instead. If Rockstar want to hold GTA hostage and demand a ransom they can suck a fuck. As big as it is, it isn't the be all end all of video games. The money Nintendo would have to spend could be directed towards an independent Western developer, as part as an exclusive partnership to help develop a new Nintendo owned IP for a new generation and Western market.

This kind of thinking lead to franchises like Gears of War, Uncharted, Killzone, Halo, Fable, and Resistance. And that's what Nintendo needs more than temporary GTA V-something exclusivity: a franchise they can call their own that the Western market wants.

Exactly.

Another better investment would be to put that money towards building an online platform that Live users changing their primary console in the coming gen can transition to relatively painlessly.

Great post, I'm totally with you.
Spend those big sums on a very appealing western exclusive (like the ones you anticipated) that help that demographic in becoming interested in your system for a game that they can find only on your console. Then, third parties' games targeted at the same demographic will come, naturally.
If you're able to create an environment where those titles can sell decently/well, the most important part of your "business for core gamers" is done.

GTA on Wii U would be huge though.

I think that is what changed this generation for the 360, when they announced GTA IV everyone knew it was a serious console (how MS have betrayed the hardcore after that is another story).

What if they do something like a loan to get it on the Wii U like what MS done for the GTA DLC exclusivity?

Because for the money it would cost, Nintendo could produce two or three games that may potentially sell more than GTA. That, or they could get exclusive new IPs from 3rd parties. MS did what it did because it is MS. Few other companies can say that.

I understand that, but it's all about getting that install base up to then sell those games to. GTA5 would increase the "core" userbase more than a Mario would, or even an F-zero or Metroid (as much as I love Metroid).

They need a Gears of War. Something that will not appear on any other system that brings innate, distinct value to their platform - and the next and potentially the next. Not some time-exclusive. People see through that crap all the time.

How many of those controllers does the Wii U support?

I didn't mean timed exclusive, I meant just to get GTA V on the Wii U. Oh well, I guess there's always Lego City Stories.

I hope nintendo doesn't resort to high-res wii games for titles like Animal Crossing and whatever. I don't expect every game to take intense use of the hardware like Zelda probably will, but I hope they use creativity to try and make something different/better rather than a sharper picture.

Or else I expect mad discounts :p

It's still too much money for something that is, in the long run, trivial. GTA was great for Microsoft, but Microsoft also had Halo and, in the works, Gears of War. Microsoft had big guns that targeted the Western audience already.

At the moment, Nintendo has essentially nothing for that audience. They have bits and pieces of franchises that sometimes appeal, sometimes don't, like F-Zero and Metroid. But what Nintendo needs more than anything is a new intellectual property that they own. They need their Gears, Halo, Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone or whatever. And I don't mean the same type of game, just a game that Nintendo can call their own that is, ultimately, distinctly Western by design and appeal.

Rare did a tremendous job of filling that gap in the N64 days. Since then Nintendo has had nothing quite like it. Part of this is due to the changing market and additional competition, part has to do with Nintendo own decision making. But now that they intend to get back into a similar market as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it would do them worlds of good to have their own Gears/Halo/Uncharted.

And that's where that money would be better spent. End of the day, if the Wii U is performing very well in the west, and that 'core' market is there, Rockstar will bring their games over. They're not stupid, they don't 'hate' Nintendo, and they know where to make their money. GTA never came to the GCN as the GCN did not have the same kind of Western market position or audience that the PS2 and Xbox had.

So, ultimately, Nintendo would be better of spending big dollars on attracting a large 'core' audience through new, exclusively owned IPs, and then allowing the flood of third party titles to follow.

It is a secret to everyone, but don't get your hopes up for more than one tablet controller being supported.
The local multiplayer focus is going to be on asymmetric multiplayer, with the tablet user playing in a different style to the players using Wii remotes.
Nintendo showed off some examples last E3.

I agree. Spending that amount of cash to get some sort of exclusive (timed or otherwise) is just pissing money down the drain. If there was a chance GTA V WOULDN'T come to Wii U, that's when Nintendo just needs to pay for devs to get in there and help them get a Wii U version done. That would NOT cost them 50 mill.

The Wii U pad has to be the default controller. Wii remotes will likely be strictly for local multiplayer support.

It's most likely going to come with a Wii-remote and nunchuk as well, expect some games to use those as the main controller.. As for the number of touchscreen controllers, that's unknown. The original announcement only had one of those supported per system, and there were no plans whatsoever to sell them separately. When pressed, Miyamoto said they were going to look into if it were possible to support two of them on the chance that a third-party developer might want to have a game that required taking your controller to a friend's house.

Didn't know there was a new Dalkstalkers in development :p

Whoops, that was Darksiders that took a few weeks to port to the Wii U, sorry.

Every time I think of GTA on a Nintendo system I'm like nahhh, could never happen...

But then I remember Wii got Bully which was pretty great, and though IIRC Chinatown Wars underperformed on DS it was the best GTA experience in years for me due to the addictive drug trade and winning a house via scratch-off game.

I only played GTA casually, on the PS2. During that time, the only complaint I had was that controlling the gun with the thumbstick was awkward, and that thing Nintendo was making based on Gyration's gyroscopic mouse (I had one of these at the time) would make the game more streamlined and fun to play). So I eternally frown at this missed opportunity.

I read AC as "Assassin's Creed" here before realizing the silliness that this brings to mind.

Mornin', all. I see it's a patent day. :D

Funny, I thought that I had the option of referring to it as the lowest tier of the next generation. I didn't realize that I had to take the rhetoric of a half-generational step or have it be a Wii situation all over again. Ehh, shows what I know, I guess.

I'm talking about from what developers had said, not from our perspective. That was what our discussion was based on.

You do, it will likely sit closer than PS2 vs Xbox, because the PS2 was below half the specs of the Xbox, but didn't even have the same technological features as the Xbox (more modern shaders that could do stuff that PS2 simply could not.)

Also he says PS4 is a full generation leap, but puts the output of the GPU somewhere at 1.8Tflops, which is half what the HD7970 does today on PCs, and next year will be even slower compared to the HD8970.

There is absolutely no chance of Consoles keeping up with PCs this time, and Wii U's specs seem to point at about half the specs of the Xbox3, which is generally thought to be the most powerful future console.

His speculation has so much riding on subscriptions helping the profits of these next consoles, when only Microsoft has announced something in this regard, and he expects netflix, hulu, hbo, ect to be bundled in the $15 xbox live subscription as if it would be profitable to Microsoft to do that... heck netflix and hulu alone would cost more than $15, so where is the profit?

Basically BG knows some target specs for the PS4, and they are at least 33% faster than Wii U's target specs (which at best are 1.2Tflops, 3 core double threaded IBM chip) AMD of course can't do double threaded cores, and performance wise should be slower per core per hz than a modern CPU from IBM, yet the GPU being targeted at 1.8Tflops is enough for him to declare something like 10x the Xbox360 (which is actually only 7.5x the GPU)

Combined all of this with the fact that budgets won't grow much this next gen from most developers, and you start to wonder if Xbox3 and PS4 won't even use the extra power for anything really noticeable. The only way we will actually see a generational leap is with some sort of GPGPU, which PS4 could have according to rumors, but won't leave Wii U behind anything close to this current gen.

First I know much more about PS4 than what I said. I just focused on the CPU, GPU, and memory. AMD has multi-threaded core CPUs which originally they were planning to use, but newer info suggests that changed. And as I said the GPU has 18CUs. That means it's a GPGPU.

Also my speculation isn't riding on subscriptions. I just like the concept of having a payment option to make the entry cost most palatable. No other meaning should be taken from that.

And that's a big assumption to make that budgets won't grow much. There's a reason why certain companies want certain levels of hardware beyond "achieving their dreams" for game production. And it's not to maintain costs where they were this gen.

A shot in the dark maybe, but it would be the icing on the cake if we got Dark Souls with the added PC content and basic U-mote integration on launch. I'm not the double dipping type, even with new content, but I would jump so hard. Titles like this would benefit from launch day sales as well, I think.

Why were people expecting a Wii version of GTA4? That game was built entirely around current gen tech.

I think at the very least people expect the Wii U to be on par with the PS3 and 360, so Rockstar won't run into any issues with tech. Nintendo has also talked quite a bit about trying to appeal to the core gamer, so GTA is a must. I'm sure that they know how important that series is and how it would be seen as a bad sign for Western dev support on the Wii U if that game isn't on the system.

I still have a feeling Rockstar is gonna find a reason to not develop for the Wii U - maybe even the same reason Crytek found for not porting Crysis 3.

I have a question.

I'm assuming that the Wii U only comes with the tablet controller (and no Wii remotes, but it does support it)... will games be using that as the main method of control or ???

How many of those controllers does the Wii U support?

It will support at least four Wii Remotes plus one Wii U Display Remote Controller (DRC) (click on the sixth image). There have been rumblings from Europe's Wine Sector suggesting that devs have been playing with two DRCs simultaneously. The gpu has been stated to be capable of outputting to four screens in addition to the TV, so it should be possible on a technical level to have four DRCs at once. Officially (as of about eleven months ago, which is last we heard), it's so far limited to one.

Edit: The above also means that it could support one DRC plus four Classic Controller Pros, as well.

It's still too much money for something that is, in the long run, trivial. GTA was great for Microsoft, but Microsoft also had Halo and, in the works, Gears of War. Microsoft had big guns that targeted the Western audience already.

Wasn't GTA a big surprise in how much it didn't move actual hardware units? I remember everybody being shocked that it didn't bring either console above the Wii in its introductory month. Granted, it could help Nintendo, as the fanbase was obviously already latching onto the Xbox 360 and PS3 at the time, but the Wii U may need a title to jumpstart this sort of movement.
