Hmm, only thing I foresee myself playing in the coming week is The Writer DLC for Alan Wake on PC, and then maybe I'll pick up American Nightmare on Steam. I'm blown away by Alan Wake, it really is in a league all its own in many ways.

I've also been playing Bulletstorm lately, and I've been hearing the siren call of my half-finished second playthrough of Vanquish. I burned myself out on Kid Icarus Uprising after 100+ hours, the most time I've sunk into any game in ages. (Not all at once, of course, but still.) Still got the action game itch!

My brother also wants to pick up Starhawk for co-op. Would be fun, but I'm so wrapped up in work these days. Fulfilling work, thankfully, but still, work!

For this gen I have to play Xenoblade, Fragile Dreams, Other M, and The Last Story. My Wii is still going to be getting alot of hours in the coming months.

What are you evern comparing his writing to?

almost anything else. 2010 was a shitty year for video game stories. it was the year of bayonetta, vanquish, other m, and sin & punishment 2. and topping them all was heavy rain. not only because of the plot holes and unintentional cheesiness, but because the story was the main point to the game. the weird creepy robot demo thing he did this year was at least as bad, so i have no hopes of him ever improving in any considerable measure.

but let's start with him being a lazy thinker, because i feel this is the crux of his problem. and there's no better way to demonstrate this than comparing it to 999, which is the type of game david cage actually wanted to make.

david cage wanted to make an adventure game, and he would up using the ps3. because the ps3 could produce the best, most life-like graphics. there's also more elbow room when using a bluray disc. it's a pretty obvious solution to his problem.

the design of the game is so basic that it could have been on the ds, psp, gba, or what have you. you might even put it in book form and not lose a whole lot. i will say the one somewhat original element is how he plays with tension in a scene and how you make your choices (through hard to see text, or manipulating the ps3 controller in unique ways). you might not get the same out of a book, but i'll touch on that later.

mostly, choices are right or wrong responses like they are in most video games with choices, but some are aided by the tense situations. but the important thing is that it's not an original element. this isn't a bad thing, but david cage essentially went the safest route creatively overall: i want a game with choices, with high drama, and multiple endings, so i'll get the ps3 and then i can kinda do a sort of interactive movie thing.

at least with indigo prophecy, at the start, there was some promise of new thinking. you being the killer, hiding the body, and then becoming the people who hunt the killer (and uncover the clues that you inadvertently left behind) was a really smart move. it treated mundane choices like talking to certain people have some impact. the game unfortunately gets away from this later, but for a little while it's an exciting take on an old genre.

there's none of this in heavy rain.

now let's look at 999.

999 is a game that, at the time, had to be designed on the ds. the key word here is designed. it was the only game with two screens, and while the choice seemed arbitrary at first, it turns out it was a crucial part of telling the story. when you make a choice, they're just numbers on a door, and it's not what you think is the right choice morally, but who you think would be best off with who. multiple endings are treated in a very unique way, tying into the overall story and encouraging mulitple playthroughs in a way few games do. it does three things david cage sought out to do with heavy rain (design it around a system, have multiple choices, have multiple endings), but the end result is a much fresher and more memorable experience. hell, 999 had a very similar plot twist, but the way it's done actually works.

now, 999 doesn't have the world's best writing. however, it at least makes sense within its own world, and it's just one high-tension situation that lasts over the duration of the game. almost every chapter in heavy rain is this huge event that demands buckets of adrenaline. women are written extremely poorly (as are men, but one of the main female characters is a prostitute and another strips because that's what female reporters do to get a story right? they strip?). the plot twist doesn't make any sense given the character it revolves around and the decisions they make. ethan blacks out and that doesn't make any sense, and is never explained because the actual explanation was that ethan had a psychic connection with somebody. a doctor refuses to admit to tell the fbi douche about ethan's condition, then the fbi douche gives him a great reason to sue, and then reveals ethan's condition. madison acts surprised to hear the identity of a person she never met. everyone tries to murder madison. some kid dies despite ethan obviously taking the brunt of the car accident. ethan's ten year old acts like a four year old at the beginning.

characters don't make sense. the stuff that happens doesn't make sense. the plot twist doesn't make sense.

i know heavy rain cost a shitload of money to make, but it's one of the safest things as far as thinking goes. it doesn't try anything new, and it's almost a waste of money because when it doesn't do anything new, it's full of bad writing.

Probably comparing to other narrative forms that have been around since humans have had language.
http://www.destructoid.com/how-heavy-rain-has-lowered-the-bar-for-game-narrative-165426.phtml
And that's not the only criticism of the story out there, that's just one that I remember from when it came out. Also I am now reminded of IGN calling GTA4's story "Oscar worthy".
That guy actually liked the story, until he got to the end. And then he totally picked it apart because he didn't like the twist at the end. And he made some huge assumptions to back up his dislike for the one single plot element.

Anyways, can you think of any other games that came out that year that had a deeper story?

Creepy children shows > Moe :p

You're going to remember the Wii U very fondly, in that case, as you'll most likely get to play the best of the best of the past decade.

Nintendo always seems to have a very slow period before the release of its next consoles, and I always use that year or so to go back and play my favorite games from recent years. So, in a weird paradoxical way, I remember those slow-release years as some of my favorite gaming years. It's also probably why I wrinkle my brow when folks complain that there's nothing to play; it leaves me wondering if replaying old games is something that many people don't do anymore.

No matter, you're in for some good times, indeed.

That's me. Though I've been tempted to dust off the old SNES and play Illusion of Gaia and FFIV.

And sadly I got out of gaming right when Majora's Mask came out so I have A LOT of catching up to do with the Zelda series being #1 on my catch up list.

999

infinite space

but especially 999. that was one impressive surprise.

at the very least. without starting to troll, at least. although i liked bayonetta's intentional over-the-top silliness better, for example, despite being bad.

okay I got to that part...

I was wondering if there were no panty shot fan service because of the new Japanese laws so I thought the anime was not bad at all nothing creepy until that AK elf girl o_O

this would make a good game I don't care what u people say :3

edit: oh shit Headshot

As bad as Heavy Rain was, Indigo Prophecy was worse.

Although I did like the opening of Indigo Prophecy (if you've played the demo, you've played the only good part).

indigo's prophecy's decline in quality as the game continued was fucking depressing. david cage obviously had a good idea in mind, and then it became too hard to keep up throughout the entire thing and he just made the rest his weird fantasy thing.

Pretty much started off really well then just went crazy then even more batshit crazy

and shame on this thread for calling heavy rain bad. Story isn't so hot if you overthink it but I found it to be a suspenseful, engaging, and different experience.

you don't have to overthink it. you just have to think it. like really obvious things that make you go, 'wait, what?'

i could go deeper and talk about how there's this really old guy who hosts a popular talk show for some reason and norman jaden is apparently a new hero for our time and cool he caught a serial killer kinda but 'for our time'?

heavy rain was one of the reasons i bought a ps3. it was the only game in 2010 i paid at least $59.99 for.

it was still fun for me, but in the same way a bad movie or tv show can be fun. especially with friends.

that kara thing was fucking frightening though.

Heavy Rain is a brilliant example of an utterly dreadful narrative with even worse twists and payoffs. Fuck it being engaging. A story is a story and it will be held to the same standards and criticisms of narrative and structure as any other story in any other medium.

I CURSE YOU DAVID CAGE.

Tangerine foreskin? Heck yes, hahaha.. those are two words I'd never put together.

So.. for those of you who are still awake: what do you plan on playing through the rest of this Nintendo generation?

I'm wrapping-up Fragile Dreams tonight, and then it's no gaming until after E3, 'cause I'll be too antsy. Then, it'll be a few months of getting every shine in the Mario Galaxy games, and then I'll spend a month or two with one single Elder Scrolls character (probably a heavily-modded game of Oblivion).

But my problem will be that once we get close enough to launch, my attention span is going to pretty much die. So all gaming in this household will most likely die come around September, and I'll be on here hitting F5 every five seconds. Does anyone else have that problem?
I'm having to save almost all of my money for Wii U(yes money is that bad for me, once you take care of essentails), so I literally have only my backlog to play.

Fortunatly, I got quite a few DS games, and awesome free games on PSN+ each month.

But we are just talking Nintendo games and unfortunatly, every DS game that I haven't beat besides Metroid Prime Hunters, is a platformer. And I am starting to tire of platformers right about now. I just beat Super Princess Peach, and Wario Land Shake It! (Wii platformer but still, its actually the last Wii game in my backlog that I haven't beaten except for games I know I don't wanna play, and games like Okami and Metroid Prime Trilogy that I just don't feel like playing or is impossible to play at the moment.)

Heres the rest of my DS backlog:

Starfy
Kirby's Canvas Curse
Kirby's Super Star
Kirby's Squeek Squad
New Super Mario Bros. (100%, I obviously beat this one.)
Big Bang Mini (Jackpot! Not a platformer!...but to hard!)
Maybe a couple more that I'm forgetting.

3DS Currently Playing (No backlog)
3D Classics Kis Icarus. (At 3-4, mastered the maze, but its to hard. I think I'm about to give up.
Metroid (Drawing my own map!...which sucks because I started it to low on the page...)
Zelda 1 + 2 (Not playing them until save states update.)
Now, Might Switch Force is in my backlog? Hows that free dlc wizardry possible?

Instead of backlogs, I am also currently playing one of the following: Mario Kart 7. kid Icarus Uprising, and Mario Tennis Open online every 1-3 days. Love these three games.

The only future games that are set in stone is Pikmin 2 and NSMB 2.

I will probably regret it, but I don't think I'll get Kirby 20th anniversary. I literally only have $120 besides the above games and a estimated $500 Wii U money and I don't want $50 of it to go on what is likely a rom dump of games I already owned. And I know it will probably be limited print...oh please don't be limited print...

This might only interest some, but a recent discussion elsewhere about Wii re-piqued my interest in a possible direction of the new GPU. Since Wii's TEV supposedly had normal mapping added, I wonder if one of the things Nintendo did (other than lighting) was come up with a way to make the GPU more efficient in handling displacement maps, tessellation, and the relationship between the two. This would be a way I can see the "ground up" games achieving much better visuals than a game that is just a port.

For those wondering what I am talking about, here are a couple of rough examples.

no one is talking about anime here

we are speculating about the greatest FPS that will hit WiiU

Upotte!!

Imagining that as an FPS made me laugh.

Time to go to bed.

nom nom nom tessellation and parallax mapping

Both look amazing in Crysis 2. Amaaazing.

Man, I wanted to buy a PS3 for MGS4 and everyone said it is shit, and I wanted to buy one for HR and ppl said it is shit, and wanted one for GoW3 and ppl said it is shit; the fucking shit?

---
but seriously, I haven't played okamiden (whatever that game is); but Indigo Prophecy was brilliant and great until like the 2/3 through the game, but the ending particularly was SO illogical, bad, out of place that I now hate the game.

The same year, we got Psychonauts (or I played at least) which had an incredibly better writing/story but people didn't care for :(

his next game is multiplat, just not for wiiU

His last game was multi-plat, too... until he realized he and his team lack creative flexibility and was incapable of making an action game. Then it became Platinum's game.

I feel like it's safe to say this here, so I'm going to say it: Especially after 2010 and their worse-than-Nintendo-2008 E3 presentation, FUCK KONAMI and everyone under their banners.

Seriously, what have they done this generation?

Killed Hudson.

Disintegrated Team Silent.

Drove their Bemani cash cow into the ground.

Otomedius.

Destroyed the Silent Hill franchise.

E3 2010 presser.

Mishandled HD collections, unadvertised releases, delays, mismanaged release schedules.... the list keeps GOING AND GOING.

So seriously, fuck Konami and letting its gaming division be propped up by a man who can't make an action game.

MGS4 is pure fanservice and amazing. My first PS4 game. GAF hates it because of the story and the bossfights, but I don't give a shits since it's MGS4. I loved that game.

Heavy Rain.. Hmm. I only played through once and must say it does more things wrong than right. But this is something everyone has to make their own opinion of. You should try it no matter what you.

And who on earth said God of War 3 is shit? What the fuck people: not only it is still one of the best looking games out there, but also it pushes the whole GoW experience onto a new level because of its presentation and the dcale of the game. It's fucking fantastic and everybody who says else is some moé dude.

There is a bunch of good software on PS3. You should keep an eye on it.

It's still going slow as hell for me =/

Between working both weekends, preparing for new interns, an English class I volunteer at, and a couple of medium sized projects I have to get out in the next seven days it's flying by for me. In fact, staying up late on Tuesday night to watch it will probably turn out to be a terrible idea, but meh. I'mma see Mario Universe live if it kills me.

unless you have a 360 or a great pc, the ps3 is pretty great.

even if you have those, i think it's worth getting for a few handful of exclusive games. valkyria chronicles is an amazing take on the strategy rpg genre. 3d dot game heroes is pretty much top-down zelda in everything but name only. uncharted 2 is a fun little romp. ratchet & clank future: a crack in time is fucking amazing and extremely overlooked by many people. ymmv with littlebigplanet, but i found it pretty fun for just the single player stuff (can't say the same about the sequel).

My original plan for E3: Fly 2 1/2 hours to LA, go to E3, geek out at the Wii-U, fly back the same day. Some would call it insane, but hey, saves a lot of money not staying at hotels, and I've always wanted to do a same-day trip like that.

Recently I realized, due to flights not leaving LA very late and Staples Center being like an hour and a half away from the airport (via bus/train at least), I'd have to leave E3 at 4ish to make my return flight. And with only 4 hours at E3, my chances of fully geeking out at the Wii-U are remote, unless Nintendo brings a bazillion of the things. Not to mention, 5 hours in flight for 4 hours at E3 just seems wrong.

So my new plan, just put into effect: Fly 2 1/2 hours to LA, go to E3, geek out at the Wii-U until E3 closes at 6, go to cheap hotel a few blocks away, sleep, go to E3, geek out at the Wii-U for 4 1/2 more hours, then fly back.

Result: 100% more potential Wii-U geekery. Cost: an extra $200 :( But worth it.
