Nintendo Direct Pre-E3 - June 3, 2012 - 6PM ET [Over] - Porn Curtains Ahoy

Handheld defeat?! Are you kidding?! The 3DS is finally hitting its stride, and compared to the vita, killing it!

And it was a hell of a struggle for them to get it rolling, but I don't think that where it is relative to Vita is of any importance.

I can see Nintendo treating it as one last hurrah though.

Nobody cares about drawing penises. When games like UNO on Xbox Live are full of actual cock then you have a problem. Nintendo will always be more vulnerable to bad press from these kinds of things, I'm sure they will have a very strict friend system around the social elements.
Why are people worried about that? I'm 99% sure it'll be limited to friends only. I guess with people who draw penises I guess you can turn them off too and only have your friends who know your 5 year old sometimes plays Wii U (or whatever the case).

I would like to think that we'll get the black console first, to differentiate it from the original wii, which is a white system for the majority of its user base.

I also don't think I'm alone in hoping Nintendo gives us that Action Figure as our Platinum Reward from Club Nintendo this year.

For the first time I actually hope the social features are friends only

I am sure things like video chat and such will be restricted but the Miiverse thing is much more open as they specified you will have friends and strangers Miis in your miiverse based on what you are playing.

The 3DS doesn't even need E3 anymore!

But I think it will be a mistake if it's totally absent from the show. The conference Ok, but I hope there will be a few first party 3DS games on the show floor.
At least we know NSMB2 will be out in August, it better be playable on Nintendo's booth.

I would guess the software showcase will reveal alot of 3DS stuff. Iwata did say there was a large investment with western oriented developers coming on the device at the last ND

Maturity, bitches.
the jettisoning of the 3DS would have me very worried if I owned one - they didn't even put a 3DS in the background of WiiU advert, yet phones featured prominently. A hint of a near-future admission of hand-held defeat, perhaps?

3DS is for playing games. Phones are for checking up on when its time to whip out the 3DS to play games.

The question is really how naive Nintendo is when it comes to creating all of this - it won't even take an hour after launch and this nice grandpa who gives advice on games actually turns out to be a 60 year old dude who likes to show his junk to young children.

They're basically combining ChatRoulette, Facebook and Forums directly into the OS - And since this comes from a company that has absolutely no experience with online communities, you'll see a hell of a lot of penis. You'll see penis everywhere. Tons of penis. Kids who just wanted to play Mario will see tons of penis. Then they go ask how to solve this or that level and they'll only see penis. So they ask on the forum and they'll see spam that links towards penis.

Oh Nintendo, I hope you're well prepared for the wave of penis that's heading your way.
This system is account based. Post penis -> permaban. Done. Works on Twitter. Works on Facebook. Works on GAF. I don't see the problem.

So instead of being happy that they showed this shit before E3 and are going to focus on just the games on Tuesday instead, peeps found stuff to complain about yet again. I am not surprised. Gamers are never satisfied. I'm happy this stuff is out the way because it means it's not going to be there during the E3 conference.

I wonder if that Zombie game clip could be from "Killer Freaks from Outer Space"?

Killer Freaks is set in London...and when you pause the video it's clear that the zombies were British Police officers and a Royal Guard. Maybe a bite from an alien turns humans into zombies?

That's my guess as well. Not to mentione the whole video screamed "Ubisoft".

Perhaps.

I didn't realise Killer Freaks was set in London, but it would make sense that they're connected.

I´m starting to get really excited for the Wii U.
2 days ago I was sure I was never gonna get one - now I feel like DAY ONE!

I was on board with the message of the Wii. The execution left a little to be desired though and after a couple of years I was thoroughly bored with it, but it was a step in the right direction for Nintendo. This just looks like two steps back, a half-mile trek sideways and a rollypoly out of the nearest fire escape.

I like the Mii-verse stuff. I hope it's a little more constrained than swap note, though, in terms of sharing media. Screenshots? Cool, good. But I saw stuff on swap note (from gaffers, no less :( ) that I didn't really want to see, and I never went back to it.

I'm a believer in the 'activity feed' thing, though, after Vita. If Nintendo were looking at the different existing systems out there, I think they picked the right direction to build on with that. And I think mapping that into the games themselves could be really good. It can indeed give a nice feeling of being 'together' even on one player games.

Its Nintendo, what did you expect.

I´m not calling out posters/mods (at least not on GAF.......), BUT heres the reason why Nintendo gets shat on so much in here:

Videogames are considered "cool" because of games like gears of war/cod/battlefield and Nintendo with its colorful graphics and new controllers don´t fit that profile.

Thats why alot of those people want the baaaad Nintendo, that dosen´t fit into the "I kill 1000 guys in a video game, so im cool" profile, to die. In their minds, Nintendo hurts the image of their hobby!

To just argue like a normal human being or just come out and say "Nintendo is not my cup of tea, i prefer pc/xbox/playstation" and just let it go is propably too much to ask of those people.

BACK To the actual topic now:

I for one am truly impressed with what has been shown in the Nintendo direct. They take online gaming and make something truly unique with it. Miiverse has the potential to catapult the Wii U on top of next gen.

I expected Nintendo to copy SEN/Live but they came up with something new, that i really like.

I can´t wait what they have in store for us this tuesday!

EDIT: I do believe that you can only receive written messages and calls from people in your friendlist, while people not in your friendlist are limited to pre defined text or smilies or whatever!

Maybe stranger Miis show up but only friend Miis can communicate with personalized messages? Just speculation. And stranger Miis can choose between different preset sentences, like MK7

The implication I see is more that they'll be providing an optional "social" api to developers for use in games. Like how devs can have a game post stuff to Facebook on 360, your Wii U version of a game can attach Nintendo Network (or maybe even FB/Twitter/whatever) content tagged for that object (a level in an overworld, or an object in game).

Something like Dead Souls and/or Fable 2's orbs on crack, available system wide for 'free'.

I can see this being used for clan functionality where your clan can have a clan-specific message board inside say Call of Duty Wii U.

I see much success from Wii-U, Nintendo gets it. They understand the money making potential of social networking and talblet like devices and they are going to make a lot of money. Their controller seems rather good at browsing, typing, and they have showed some other interesting features.

I think there are two levels of things gong on.

The first is that every game, I think, will have its own 'plaza' where Miis related to you (either by friends list or geography/language) can leave comments or updates about the game. And you can see a feed of those things. Developer doesn't have to do anything for that, it exists outside the game, on the OS side.

The second seems to be an API that devs can use to access and/or create event/time-stamped 'social data' around their game - comments being made at specific points in the game etc, and use it in-game. Up to devs to use that, and to expose the data to the player as they see fit.

Spoilers could be controlled pretty naturally using the second system. The first could be more open to abuse, so may depend more on you own moderation of the Miis who can contribute to your feed (e.g. friends only).

I don't really have the time to look (or even skim) through 30 pages of reactions, but I thought I'd chip in with my two penneth:

I couldn't help but be left convinced that Nintendo haven't got a bloody clue of where they're going with this. The message is muddled, contradictory, and the jettisoning of the 3DS would have me very worried if I owned one - they didn't even put a 3DS in the background of WiiU advert, yet phones featured prominently. A hint of a near-future admission of hand-held defeat, perhaps?

Perhaps they'll prove my gut wrong, and really I'd rather they did, but I wouldn't be willing to put any amount of money on it.

You really don't see what they're going for?

Let me explain.

Okay, usually, E3 press conferences talk about concept/vision stuff that kinda bores everyone, with a little bit of sales charts thrown in for good measure, with the real exciting stuff, the software/hardware info, also spread around.

What Nintendo did with last night's 30 minute presentation was get the concept/vision stuff out of the way, so that they can focus on the software fully at the press conference.

Here's what you can expect:
1. The press conference will cover sales talk and a very brief review of the concept stuff at the beginning (10-20 minutes). The rest of the hour or 90 minutes or whatever will be devoted to Wii U games. They may put 1 or 2 game things before the sales talk, though, just to start things off well.
2. Within an hour of the conference ending, Nintendo's press site will have stuff up for games shown during the conference. In addition, a whole slew of games, both major and minor, that were never previously announced and were not mentioned in hte press conference will show up on the website. This year, that will include all 3DS content as well as Wii and WiiU content. That is how E3 goes for nintendo every year. Conference with a few highlights, and then a mega-dump on their press site that unveils many other new titles that are at E3 but weren't in the conference.

It's not that complex.

I know many have probably said this, but the Miiverse seems like the combination of Near and the gamespaces seen on Vita.

After seeing the video, combining these two social "apps" seems the logical evolution.

I like it.

Oh god, people actually think the zombie thing was footage from a game instead of just a deliberately over the top horror closeup for demonstration purposes? It's probably stock footage.

Does self-aware comedy completely go over some of your heads? SMH

Nintendo knows how to make new stuff really attractive. I'm really excited about the new menu interface and just the bells and whistles of the new system.

You should know it does. More often than not silly tongue-and-cheek humor is mistaken for genuine effort.

But the same half-a-second extreme horror closeup was used every time footage of the "game" was shown. How could you think that was genuine?

oh, lord i forgot about the second screen for a second :/ yeah they can functionally do two menus at once, social window on the gamepad and system menus on the screen. sounds like that would work.

What looked like an icon for the more traditional Wii-like system menu layout was displayed on the bottom right hand corner of the TV, which was presumably being displayed on the DRC at the time. What's displayed on each screen can probably be swapped out with the press of a button.

The new controller looks great in stock images. It's a shame they didn't spruce up the console a bit but in the long run it doesn't really matter.

Now that I got that joke out of my system. One thing I found really interesting was a throw away line Iwata made about Developers using the Demon's Souls'/Twitter feed to interact with the community (if I heard him correctly)

Obviously participation will be dependent on the developer but it really streamlines the flow of information and communication in ways that makes me optimistic about the future of game development.

now you made me want to play mario 64 again

I'm probably alone on this, but if there's one game that would pretty much guarantee a Wii U purchase for me, it would be a sequel to Sunshine. As brilliant as both Galaxy games were, there's just something about SMS that works for me. I actually like Isle DelFino and thought using FLUDD was a blast.

I'm a sucker for operating systems and interfaces. I've really enjoyed Nintendo's this generation more so then the others. Though I really liked Xbox 360's original blade interface and wish they hadn't changed it or let you choose to keep using it. Really liking this Miiverse setup.

Re: message board worries:

Has Nintendo said whether the boards will be friend-only? If that's the case, then I don't see the issue with spoilers and penis everywhere. You can simply defriend people who are idiots about using it, as there is a spoiler tag. I know none of the people I generally game with would intentionally spoil me on something, but I don't just add random people to my consoles.

In recent years I think forums warped my view on SMS. When I first played it I loved it, but then over the years my memories of it got worse.

I started playing it this year again and man, it's so fun. It's the best controlling Mario out of all the 3D games IMO. Pin point prediction, and fludd is great.
