only 3 hours of play? With all that room for batteries?

Why can a fucking paper-thin iPad 3 last for 10 hours and this fat bulky plastic thing 3?

Unfortunately I have expected something like this so was prepared for it. I understand too well that technology isn't magic. And battery technology is shit compared to the demands of modern mobile computing.

I'm not saying this is great news, it's not...

... but it's becoming clear expectations are way outstripping reality in the area of consumer electronics.

You aren't going to be playing a iPad game for 10 hours either, if it has wifi on all the time.

That's just the way it is.

I'm sure they'll have a dock for it so it will be fully charged every time you start a gaming session.

...really going after the core gamers, there.

Really though, for casual gamers, parents, etc., 3-5 hours is plenty. Sucks for marathon gaming, though.

EDIT: forgot about iPad. Loltendo.

Tablets have 10+ hours of battery, what the fuck is wrong with this thing?

Tablets aren't constantly receiving video streaming from another device though. How much time does it take for an iPad to run out of battery streaming Netflix?

Glad to see Nintendo learning nothing from the 3DS. Now we just have to wait for them to announce a $399 price point no one will want to pay.

bad news after bad news.

using two pads will cause the frame rate to drop significantly, and now short battery life announced.

This screen really fucked things up again. Imagine if they had spent that extra money on improving hardware specs and announced the Wii U pro controller as the controller.

Damn they dropped the ball. I guess that's what happens when you take risks trying to pull another Wii.

Well that's some questionable battery life, but kind of expected I guess when you consider what it's doing. Understandable but no less disappointing.

I think this is mostly going to be a problem for marathoning or playing RPGs, but as long as I can use a decently long cable I don't really care too much.

Yep, it's not a portable console so I don't really see the issue.

You're not going to be walking around town with it - it's going to be in the same room as the charger almost all the time.

This doesn't bother me too much. I probably won't play for longer than five hours in one sitting anyways.

Yeah I don't do that shit anymore. Plus it can be used while charging, right? And hopefully there's a wired solution too. This is like a non-issue for me

Having to wait 2.5 fucking hours between every 3-5 hours of gameplay sounds really annoying. I would probably end up keeping it wired all the time but I dont like the idea of swiming and moving around the gamepad with a wire attached.

Nintendo didn't release a play and charge solution for the Wii remote because a lot of the games were so movement based that you couldn't be tethered whilst playing. It would have caused all sorts of safety complications.

With the Wii U, there shouldn't be those same complications, but some games may want to use the controller in a more active way. Would Nintendo disable play and charge functionality in certain titles if they required a lot of movement, or would they leave that up to the player's judgement?

The important question here (and maybe it has been answered already and I just don't know it) is "Can you use the tablet/gamepad while it is charging?"

Because if not, this is going to be a disaster. Wii remotes were already pretty bad, where the only rechargeable batteries I'm aware of require contact to charge, meaning you can't just run a wire to the controller, and its not practical to play while its charging. This is perhaps understandable, since a wire would be unwieldy for a motion controller, but it also meant you had to have a spare already charged at all times, or you would be SOL if it died. Luckily the battery life wasn't too bad, otherwise it would have been impractical for party settings without spending a good chunk of change on replacing batteries.

If I can plug this in and play while charging, then I don't particularly care what the battery life is. But if I can't do that, then this is going to be a real problem for a system that I'm realistically not going to have a spare controller.

Damnit Wii U, can't there be something good about you? Console gaming is dead, I'm getting a PC tomorrow lol.

Okay, but an iPad has a dual-core CPU and a quad-core GPU in it. Wii U Gamepad doesn't have that stuff so it should last much longer than the iPad, not under half the time.
