[N-Conf] Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate (artwork, images, features)

David Cox tempering expectations regarding the 3DS game.

Several times he says "we have not gone metroidvania", but he also they've taken criticism to heart and have added exploration elements to both Mirror of Fate and LOS2, that there will be backtracking and such and have a more open world nature. So that's a bit contradictory with "we have not gone metroidvania!". Weird.

Re: Mirror of Fate - "It's not a level-based game... it's one continuous journey through the castle... the layout, in terms of level design, is very similar to a Metroidvania-style game." Seems pretty unambiguous.

I can't wait. I just hope graphically they understand there are games like Revelations out there.

I'm not sure I'd say it's quite on par with Revelations, but it has fairly detailed character models and environments, decent lighting, self-shadowing and (I think) normal mapping on many of the enemies, proper dynamic shadows for every character... it's definitely one of the more technically impressive games on the platform.

The game looks quite impressive.

Maybe not as well as Revelations but it is a clear step up from say PSP

During the 3DS conference, I first thought there was GCI going on only to realize that was the in-game engine.

If only the 3DS had a higher resolution...the pixels make it hard to appreciate, but its one nice looking game. Certainly PS2-era quality, plus shaders.

Very much looking forward to it.

I mean, just a quick glance as images

In motion, 3DS games look better than still images

Looks kinda bad, back to feeling like they ruined Castlevania until further notice. At the very least, it looked like enemies had way, way, way, way, waaaaay too much health. Basic skeletons seemed to be just sponging up damage for forever. Maybe they'll still manage to turn it around, but things aren't looking too good here, at least from what I'm seeing.

Man, I'm not saying that there's no valid basis for criticizing MoF or that I'm certain it'll be a flawless masterpiece, but after watching all the gameplay footage, it still looks quite promising to me. It's hard to shake the impression that a lot of people are hating this for not being another Igavania, rather than for what it actually is.

It's basically a 2.5 Lords of Shadow with a bit of Metroidvania-esque exploration. Since I like both, I'm probably going to dig this. Just hope the framerate holds up.

I think it's the most promising sidescroller-style CV since Symphony of the Night. The gameplay looks great and the castle looks like it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun to explore. I also like the more grounded art direction. It looks like a darker, more sinister place IMO.

I've been of the belief for quite sometime that the next great side scrolling vania will have Alucard as a prominent character so I'm going to keep my faith with MS for the time being.

I do see the concerns of enemies having too much HP. That boss seemed to also. But remember you can upgrade your character in this one. So there is reason to stock up on items and be ready for big battles. Other than that the game looks great.

I am slightly worried about four full stories in one 15-20 hour game but that's not a major issue.

Boring combat with stylish combos and enemies that dies only after one hundred hits.
QTEs in 2D.
Automatic whip swinging.
Bad enemy placement.
Framerate dips with many enemies on the screen.
Being LoS (that's just a personal problem).
Bosses being both boring and having bad patters to it.
The character looks like a rock jumping, but only playing I would know if it's really stiff.

The platforming, when not whip swinging, looks good enough. The graphics aren't bad too. I just don't like the things I listed up there. I was giving this a chance, despite not liking LoS at all. But it doesn't look good at all.

Yeah what I got from the interview is the level design is very much like a metroidvania. It's just that they're ditching the RPG elements of the IGAVania games which I'm fine with because my favorite part of metroidvania games is the exploration.

I completely agree.

Most of the things you complain about (combat, hundred hits, enemy placement, bosses, patterns, jumping feeling, etc.) make it seem like you played it. Did you?
Honestly, your comment about "being LoS" (plus your previous replies in this thread) give the impression of bias against the game.
I think you should wait until the game gets closer to its release date.

We don't need to play it to get a feel that standard enemies have to much life when we can watch videos and see Trevor stopping in his tracks and whipping them for what seems like a longer amount then needed.

One of the big parts of the Metroidvania style games was keeping flow and movement going. This is why even pretty early unless you are doing a low lvl run or sticking to weak weapons you get into a pace where most enemies tend to die very quickly and backtracking and so forth isn't an issue.

Could this be the case in MoF? Possible, that poster didn't even say it wasn't but the amount of attacks that standard enemies take is unsettling.

I definitely like the art, but I'm hearing a lot of negative buzz surrounding the game itself. Anyone care to extol its virtues?

I hope it's good.

It wouldn't hurt if they sped up the combat a little bit. Make enemies attack faster, do more damage, but also give them less health.

The bossfight for instance took way longer than necessary.

Well when I played Aria of Sorrow for the first time in 9 years, in anticipation of MoF's revea,l I was surprised about how many hits the skeletons take at LV. 1. EDIT: It's still not as bad as in MoF because the attacking speed of the player is much faster in AoS.

Let's hope they will take only one or two hits at LV. 3 or 4 in MoF.

Still, MoF seems to need a lot of polish. Let's hope MS takes their time until fall.

Are you kidding me man? Did you not watch the gameplay videos? All of my complaints can be seen on the video. And I doubt that, outside the framerate, these will be changed on the final build. I mean... why the hell do I need to full combo a fucking skelleton?

So let me get this straight: Trevor is Gabriel and Marie's son? They had a child we never heard about in the first Los? Isn't that a little... convenient?

I guess we will see.
This is an E3 demo and the game is far from release. There is plenty of time to improve/polish/change things based on feedback.

Videogame storyline for unplanned [mid]sequels 101.

so... is the music classic CV or the 100% anonymous hollywood background stuff from LoS?

I heard LoS battle music going on during the demo, but it may be a mixture of both, then again I don't know. Didn't pay to much attention if he said anything during the showing of the demo.

What's the difference between QTEs in 2D and QTEs in 3D?

Good lord, that framerate looks pretty bad. I'll definitely gamefly this and give it a glance over before I put up the cash. Not looking good, but I really hope it's just the stream quality.

I will probably buy this despite I hate everything it stands for... but it kinda looks like a nice plattforming action adventure thing.
but calling it castlevania is like a wooden stake through my heart... there is nothing what I'd consider castlevania about it... bland music, bland environments...
I am gonna play it, I'll probably even like it a bit, but for sure I will flame nintendos survey for bringing me the wrong "castlevania" game.

I really need to replay ooe now, to flush that bitter feel

Hey, I don't mind them trying to replicate Classicvania (Metroidvania has been done to death so to speak), but I agree with you that the music just sounds too generic. I'm begging MercurySteam to start picking up riffs of the old game at one point. I mean, you can't have Castlevania without Vampire Killer.

Ushojax

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
For me the only concern is the framerate. It doesn't look smooth but if they fix that I will probably get it.

Were there QTEs in the demo?
Or is he mean the finishing move?

Didn't you see the giant "X" above the boss when he grabs Trevor? There. Also, finish moves counts as QTEs, but these ones are optional (even though you'll be forced to use them if you want to kill the enemy faster).

WHOAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Edit: wait a minute

He says 'I doesn't want to compare it to Metroidvania because it's not a Metroidvania game, but the layout in terms of level design is very similar to a Metroidvania'

And he talks about backtracking

WTF

Simple answer: He's flipflopping since he wants to appeal to fans of the Metroidvania (read: Igarashi) branch and also to those who are tired of that style.

More nuanced answer: It's Metroidvania in level-structure, LoS in combat and character (health/damage) progression.

The only thing it's not, is Classicvania.

"Over Heerreee..." fucking Chupacabras. And they don't even LOOK like what Chupacabras are supposed to look like. Still fun though.

And for the record I loved CV PSP. The art direction and bosses for the remade Rondo of Blood was awesome, as well as customized soundtrack :)

the piano man
the 2 seconds when Alucard appears in the meristation trailer.... I get goosebumps, so hyped. Dat badass Alucard with white hair and a sword, love him.

I have decided I'll love this game and I will forgive its shortcomings.

bring it on.

We may never get a Classicvania ever again.
