I'd imagine some strange and primitive concept of hygiene was involved, I don't know. The word mezizah can refer to squeezing or suction. It's possibly they felt that doing that orally was a more effective method of drawing the blood (or a less painful one, for the child) than using a wet cloth/sponge.

These days it's almost always a sterile tube used instead, if anything (most don't bother with the practice at all)

Oh and Muslims don't do anything like this. Never have. I doubt this is a popular Jewish thing too.

How many people in this thread have a bigger problem with a non sexual act (albeit antiquated) rather than the genital mutilation?

I'm not defending the ridiculous form of cleaning, but to automatically attach a sexualized characteristic is pretty fucked.

I agree; sexual never crossed my mind and I don't think it plays any part here. the parents are there watching the whole time and probably other family members. also, blood and babies screaming are a turn off for anybody.
but, you know online posters...

Well that part isn't going away, as people don't care about male genital mutilation.
Talk about female genital mutilation, and it's completely different.

But then people compare the most extreme form female genital mutilation to male.
Any genital mutilation done on babies unless done for a real medical emergency should not be done.

Let that person decide if they want it once they're an adult.

Though the defense force for male genital mutilation is pretty strong.

i'm actually shocked. what the fuck? the people involved are insane. just utterly unacceptable, tradition or not. lock them up.

btw, are there ANY non-religious communities that do something similar and if so how would they justify it? or is this something that can only happen with religion?

Assuming that a male circumcision is done correctly (i.e. no STD-ridden mohels sucking your blood), the male will be able to have an orgasm and enjoy sex. The goal is either to mark a male as part of a specific religion or tradition, or for cleanliness.

Assuming that a female circumcision is done correctly, the female will /not/ be able to have an orgasm and enjoy sex. The goal is to render the female docile and virginal, and unwilling to cheat on her future husband.

So, totally different.

Equivalent would be trimming the hood over the man in the boat without touching the man or the boat. But they don't ever do that.

Yeah i agree, and i think any parent that allows their child to have their ears pierced should be dragged through the streets, pushed against a wall and shot.

What sucks is that there could be resistance to this, as it seems to be a firm tradition with those that practice it. I just wish the health of the child would be put first.

Seriously, if your "culture" results in a fucking BABY contracting herpes or having his genitals mutilated, it has no place in the fucking 21st century. That's not a valid defense.

I freaked out when my parents told me that my circumcision was a whole song and dance religious ritual that took place in our home.

I just thought a doctor did it..

I wish I had a foreskin.
