Did Bungie ever say why they got rid of the covie sniper? I liked that sniper more than the human one.

Goal for Reach was to remove as many redundant weapons as they could. Beam Rifle was probably a relatively easy cut. You weren't even able to start with it in 3.

So instead of the sniper, they took the Beam Rifle's silhouette and then kinda melded it together with the Sentinel Beam to make the Focus Rifle.

After seeing Heretics in Firefight with Sniper Rifles, I think I'm glad they don't have a Beam rifle in Reach. Because then there would have been a spot with Beam Rifle Jackals and I would have just bought a plane ticket and drop the disc from the sky to watch it shatter into millions of pieces.

that is cool, but I am talking about Reach. I wonder why they took out the covie sniper. Honestly I don't even want to play with any covenant weapons after seeing the promethean's weapons on display. I am ready to vaporize people.
Bungie wanted to eliminate as many duplicate weapons as possible in Reach. The Face Melter would have been a superb replacement for the Beam Rifle if they would have left the beta version in the game.

edit: fucku fyrewulff. I say that a lot when the wife and I play Rock Band and see your scores. :p

yeah but when unfortunately i have to play Elite slayer it would be nice to have a sniper rifle. There are no one shot kill weapons on the covenant side.

yeah i don't understand the purpose of betas sometimes in Halo. Anything people like always get changed to the point nobody wants to use it anymore.

343i is it really a choice in giving me 3 different game types on the same map?
How can you not like it?!?!???!

But a custom browser won't work because people will put naughty things in the server name!

Yeah I don't understand it. Everything is moving towards choice. Record shows when you want, stream stuff when you want, make your own music playlists, etc, etc. I mean, COD is the embodiment of this, right?

Being funneled into a fixed matchmaking setting seems crazy in 2012. Playlist management has been, currently is, and will be terrible, so let people decide what they want to play. In this area (as in others) COD gets it right far better than Halo. My friends and I love playing Domination in Blops. That's all we care about playing. So, we go into the Domination playlist and play that gametype over, and over, and over, and love every second of it. There's no hoping for Dom on Jungle. There's no hoping I can start with an accurate weapon. I just choose what I want and the game spoon feeds it to me. It's fantastic.

CoD seems to drill down more by individual gametype rather than relying on playlists with a big mix of gametypes. Maybe Halo 4 needs to have more individual gametype playlists (CTF playlist, Assault Playlist, etc.) and only a few that have a big mix of stuff. Maybe have BTB, then BTB CTF. Have Team Slayer, CTF, Assault, Infinity Slayer, etc.

I wouldn't be opposed to server browser, but I'd like matchmaking to remain as well. BF3's server browser can make it hard to just jump in a game with friends a lot of the time.

A streamlined matchmaking and a custom browser on the side would be great. The problem with BF3 is that everything is mixed into one group. You can't filter between DICE and private servers.

Population wouldn't support them.

A better solution would be to somehow set up a gametype vote then the appropriate map selection, but with how H3/Reach do voting, it probably would a bigger frustration than actually be helpful. People want to play the game, and as fast as possible.

I still have my Perfect Dark Zero copy from the 360's launch... probably my biggest gaming regret was getting it instead of Call of Duty 2.
For what it's worth - CoD 2 sucked.

Nice games with the guys I was with. Especially this one.
Try this URL instead. I'm totally confused how you can play a 7-minute game with 10 people and have a total of 9 kills, combined. Was it just one big Jack Benny chase or something?

By the way Wu, that was me you just for a FB request from. :p
Yeah, I figured that out from the background image. ;)

Being able to go into a playlist that caters specifically caters to 5v5/8v8 CTF/Assault would make me very happy.

No crappy fringe gametypes, just CTF and Assault.

Or maybe you could have some options set up for your personal matchmaking, like you could tell the game to prefer other CTF/Assault players for instance, and when you match against mostly them, you get very specific gametypes.

Also take Assault out of BTB (or split BTB to BTB Slayer and BTB Objective) so people don't vote for Assault and then 10 minutes in no one has even touched the bomb...

Was playing a game of Neutral Bomb last night with a full team. About halfway through the game, I see the bomb behind some rocks on the way to their base. I ask "okay, got the bomb - anyone around for cover?" Nobody's around -they're all fighting near OUR base. Then I notice that NOBODY'S around - not just my team, but NOBODY. So I walk the bomb in, and plant it, and score. Geez.

I honestly think a Team Flag playlist would hold it's own, but other objectives most likely wouldn't'.

With 343 giving the team who wins in TO more credits, It gives me hope that they understand the problem with objective games and has fixed it for Halo 4.

Who cares if the person who scores the flag gets some points/credits bonus? It works in CoD (but then again you can't betray your team mates). People will actually want to score the objective.

Actually, the other team was playing Team Get Slayed.

(It was actually a fun evening - a full team of 8, actually playing objectives. Meant we didn't earn a lot of credits, because the games generally ended in 4-6 minutes... but there was a lot of variety. :) )

I certainly wouldn't mind separating BTB objective from BTB slayer; I don't particularly want to play with people that just want to play infinite slayer.

Unless they can get the rewards working properly to make people not want to play infinite slayer.

Dunno... maybe...

Why couldn't there just be a Team Objective list with voting options for game type and map. Or no voting options at all and core game type rotating.

2 Flag, Assault, Oddball, KoTH

One sided or neutral flag/bomb objectives could be thrown in with other game types in a social list that is a complete mixed bag.

I have to disagree with that statement, I imagine that the things achievable with a next generation console both visual wise and gameplay wise will go far beyond this. Sounds like this guy just wants to make people stop wanting new platforms; I get what hes saying, its about gamplay experiences not power, but I still disagree that power can't drive new experiences.

That has to be a misunderstanding, they ask about skulls and he talks about player progression in Infinity? Huh?

Yeah I agree with this. To me, Team Flag is the epitome of Halo multiplayer and having it share a playlist with other objective games just serves to hide away what is one of the best experiences in Halo and frustrate those who want to play it.

He's probably right for the beginning of the next gen cycle, but think what devs can do once they optimize and start doing cool shit within what they have to work. Part of why I like consoles is the standard hardware across the board and that devs have a limit. They have to optimize and make smart choices while coding, not just demand more and more power from the computer. Sure, it can cause limits and such for us too, but for the most part I think we get easy to use games that don't require extra fuss, and devs have to get creative and smart.

Edit: Oh and that guy is just so bitter about gaming and consoles, yet doesn't make that great of games anymore. Maybe he should retire, or start making indie type PC games where he can do exactly what he wants.

I would be shocked if a BTB Objective list lasted longer than two months. Even now, forcing the vote away from crap like BTB Slayer Paradiso is an tall order these days. Folks just don't flock to that style of match these days.

On the previous topic, I also like the grab bag nature of Objective, when their new slot restrictions don't work against it. I don't like the idea of shutting out gametypes that are second tier but still quality like King and Oddball. Even symmetric Stockpile is well above the bar where I'd want to cut it entirely. And those gametypes can't support their own playlists because they have always served primarily as secondary options to get out of the same-gametype-all-night rut. See: Neutral Bomb Zealot nights. I don't think they're very offensive in that role, people just get frustrated that the top slot is dedicated to Flag gametypes, but not the combinations that everybody wants. Instead it's Flag Slayer, 3 Flag, Speedflag, and CTF Classic with AR starts half the time when MultiFlag and 1 Flag should be the stars. On top of that Assault is in the bottom slot zone of "gametypes nobody seems to care about" when it doesn't really fit there instead of being the Flag companion it used to be.

tldr; better micromanagement of playlist offerings make games way better. Team Flag was great, but it also came after they axed TO in Halo 3 and finding a game of CTF outside BTB wasn't particularly easy at that point.

Yeah.

I believe Team Flag was one of the top Double XP weekend playlists in Halo 3 (after LD and grifball). Though it was around only for the weekends.

Flagstraganza did alright (in Reach) I think, but that was all the gimicky gametypes (Speed flag,3 flag,2 flag slayer etc).

I have yet to find someone who can convince me Team Snipers is a good gametype anyhow. Something that increases camping = bad in my book.

As little as Headhunter ever pops up in MM, what I enjoy most about the gametype is that it actively discourages any sort of static playstyle.

I'm sure I can convince you, come play snipers with me on halo 3, I garuntee it will be far from campy.

I still can't believe it's gone like 2 games now with not even KotH. It's just Team Slayer with one weapon. How does this piece of shit support being it's own playlist I'll never know.

King of the hill in snipers would be the stupidest thing ever. You would get your head popped off immediately.

Edit: I also really miss the beam rifle :(

rofl - I can nearly guarantee that he would hate the game. (When I go into a Snipers list alone, I'm fine. When I go in with someone good, I get my face ripped off - repeatedly. Not even REMOTELY fun.)

I've actually played a few KotH Snipers games... and they're... interesting. (Generally, you're invisible in the hill, which keeps you alive a LITTLE more.)

Problem: People play Slayer in Objective gametypes.

Bad solution: Discourage/downplay kills in Objective gametypes.
Worse solution: Remove Objective gametypes altogether.

Best solution: Make sure people that just want to play Slayer only play Slayer gametypes.

Crazy solution: Encourage Objective play by giving Slayer-enhancing bonuses to teams that successfully capture flags (or arm bombs).

Basically, what if capturing a flag gives everyone on your team an ordnance drop? Obviously it would have to be a fairly weak one (no overshield, power weapons, etc.), but I think that would really motivate players to play the objective.

Or, if you want something that doesn't affect balance, just give the entire team a big credit bonus for each flag capture and make sure the reward is immediate and obvious. What happens in Reach when you capture a flag? Steitzer announces "Flag Captured!" and your teams score goes up. Give that a little more fanfare, maybe a short musical cue, and immediately slap a "+500 cR" on the screen to show players that playing the objective is profitable. Don't wait until the post-game carnage screen.

It sounds cheesy (and CoD-like) but I think it would help.

Haha I know that feeling, im trying to get good at sniping in gears and so far I have been on the receiving end of those ass kickings! Initially I would certainly stick to a casual custom game at least to just to show how much movement can actually be involved in a halo snipers game. People have a weird misconception that sniping always has to be campey but in halo 3 it was more akin to everyone having rail guns. It was fast paced and flanking etc was very important. I really like that halo sniping isn't realistic.

King of the hill snipes with invisible hill players also sounds pretty bad, depending on the strength of the camo those guys would just demolish anyone before they could get close to the hill whilst being able to stay still, that would actually encourage camping!

I just got back into playing Reach in case this tournament ever happens, and I was shocked at how terrible the playlists are.

There are about 40 different playlists it seems like, and I can only stomach one or two of them. How they managed to do such a terrible job at creating playlists is mind-boggling.

First off, the TU should be included in every playlist; it's a TITLE UPDATE. Even if they don't want to do that, its still relatively easy

TS - No TU, mix of AR and DMR starts
TS TU - Title Updated slayer, mix of AR and DMR starts
Slayer Pro - Title Updated, Zero Bloom, DMR starts, No Radar slayer
Team Snipers - Title Update, snipers only, no radar
FFA - Title Updated Slayer, mix of AR and DMR starts
Objective - No TU
Objective Pro - TU, DMR starts, zero bloom, mix of flag, king and oddball

MLG
Grifball
Living Dead
Invasion

Then whatever other BS they need to throw in there like Action Sack.

Its just sad that I can't go into any playlist except MLG without the threat of at least 50% of the gametypes being terrible. It seems like every playlist is a random mix of everything rather than just being focused and allowing players to choose a list that they like 100%.

Hah... used to run this and Sniper Flag on The Pit with some friends in customs in H3 - I thought it was a blast.

Crazy idea for Team Snipers (or maybe even FFA Snipers):

20 seconds after you spawn, a waypoint appears over your head for the enemy to see. Getting a kill (or dying) resets the timer and makes the waypoint disappear.

So if you get at least one kill every 20 seconds you don't have to worry about the waypoint. Sit still at one spot without getting kills though and you'll be at a disadvantage - freshly spawned opponents can see a waypoint above your head but you won't see one above theirs.

Cap a flag? Everyone on your team gets 1000 cR.

Ship it.

Each flag cap is worth 10,000 cR. The 10,000 is divided between each player according to their contribution.

5,000 is divided between the players based on their flag carry time
1,000 is given to the player who capped the flag
4,000 is divided between the players based on their kills during the time while the flag was out of the opponents base (slaying is a necessary component of any flag cap).

People will betray each other so they can get more carry time. Just give everyone the same amount of credits for a cap.

lol - people will go back to betraying each other for the cap, even.

BETRAYAL -1000 cR

BETRAYED FLAG CARRIER - no points for you.
What happens to those points, then?

(You pick up the flag. I betray you, hold the flag for a minute, then cap it.

I have all the flag holding time, I have the cap - but no points, so now you've just eliminated 60% of the points you were distributing. Too damn complicated.)

Or, I just wait until the other team shoots you once, so that I won't get the betrayal, THEN kill you.

I tried to come up with an arena rating for CTF this way. It's to prone to abuse. People would just hold on to the flag without capturing it so they get more credits.

1000 cR for every player on the team - but make sure that bonus is immediate and obvious. It should also be much larger than the reward for individual kills.

75 cR per kill

Those points are redistributed to the other players. If they all have 0 flag time, they all get 1/3 of the 5,000 points.

I'm not really proposing this as a finalized idea, just something to throw out there. You want to make it simple, just give each team points after the game based on how many caps they had and give the winning team a big cR boost.

Aren't convoluted ideas like these either a) what drove people away in Reach with having 'hidden' calculations and things that don't always work? or b) 'not halo?'

Just imagine if we didn't have a credits system and it was all 1-50. Man, that would be cool.

I think I am basically done with Reach at this point. I'll play it more here and there, but whatever.

For Halo 4, I'd play Objective a lot more if more core game types come up on good maps. If Halo 4 has shitty maps, or MM is plagued with Forge maps, it'll ruin it for me.

As for non-core game types, if they have to be in main playlists, I'd hope they are lower weighted. What I'd really like to see is good core game types in playlists, and bring back weekend playlists for the different types and to mix it up. Please make Living Dead a weekend playlist, not an all the time one. I know a lot of people play it, but come on, its not a real Zombie game and its not really what Halo is about.

Excuse me, but BOOM! Ball is not BS.

Its only fun because you spawn with a GL. Its fun yeah, but its basically a BS fringe game type. ;)

The formulae doesn't affect gameplay so yeah I don't see why people would say it isn't 'halo' because it would sit alongside gameplay that hopefully is halo.

That said its very convulated and I don't like it. Simply rewarding the entire team a base reward sounds so much better, but perhaps prone to boosting, I can imagine people spending entire games trading flags just for easy cr.

Personally I don't care if people abuse the system, those guys don't affect me, I don't think that's the line bungie has ever taken though so I wonder how 343 will approach it.
