Guy Says Rude Thing to Person, Gets Fired From Destructoid, Says More Rude Things

Wow. I'm surprised this is still going. No one on Dtoid has really given it a second thought since last night, save for the one or two editors who are responding to messages sent directly their way. Even then, no one wants to get into much detail anymore. In truth, we are all just bummed out about the whole situation. Nobody on staff disliked Ryan, and this whole mess was a shock to us all.

I'm disappointed that Jim Sterling keeps getting brought up in such discussions. We already went through that episode and resolved it, and it shouldn't have any bearing on the Felicia Day incident. I always have a good chuckle when Jim Sterling gets badmouthed, by the way. He can defend himself, so I'm not doing that for him, but people's opinions of him always stem from one or two situations taken completely out of context. Knowing the guy personally, it's quite amazing how the image people paint of Jim is so unlike the real guy.

This is a pretty good defence of a guy you're not going to defend.

If calling someone a "feminazi slut" on twitter doesn't get someone fired, one asking if Felicia Day mattered is easily called into question. David Jaffe definitely has a point here.

Opinions of celebrities are painted by what they put out there - it's why people think that they're all conceited, or anything else.

Knowing the person will always change your opinion of them, but people can only go off of what they see. Way it is.

The whole niche market celebrity thing is so bizarre, but it hardly excuses being a shithead to someone out of the blue like that. As far as I can tell Felicia Day hasn't even let herself be directly dragged into this, which indicates she's pretty mature and has some class.

Okay.

But this isn't important.

What's important is that you tell you what the Gay Agenda is.

This is also true.

Got into a twitter slap fight with another idiot. Not fireable. And thankfully he wasn't. If he was running around calling people that unprovoked, then sure. This was a matter between two ego-driven dopes.

You notice how Felicia and Jim handled their situations? One didn't answer while the other gets into a "twitter slap fight." Says a lot how we think of these guys though.

Twitter drama is like Wargames: The only winning move is not to play.

See, this is exactly why I hate this whole thing.

Everything you listed, ALL OF IT... none of it has been beneficial to gaming. Yet here you are saying she's done something for gaming, and when someone disagrees with you, you go on a tangent about sexism, because she's an attractive female.

I'm not jealous of her popularity, but I feel like there's no reason she can't be criticized, which seems to be almost offensive to some folk.

Just by doing voice acting she benefited more to gaming than low class troll from troll den of destructoid can hope to do in his whole "carier".

And she can be criticized - as long as critics use polite language.

Offtopic, but Alpha Protocol is a reaaaaaaaaaally interesting game in terms of story, branching, and progression. (Fuck the gameplay though)

Alpha Protocal is maybe the greatest RPG ever.

Just sayin~

Too bad you have to be a guy :T

She currently plays Dr. Holly Martin in the Syfy series Eureka. She's been playing it for awhile. And while her character, prior to recent events, was just more of Day's riffing off her geeky persona, the last few episodes for her have been pretty good, honestly, with a couple of touching moments in there.

So it isn't like Felicia Day is making money or gaining notoriety for doing nothing. Girl has an acting gig (till the end of the season, when the show ends), so she makes her contributions the same as any other actress.

I stopped reading crappy Kotaku and douchey destructoid a while ago. They are insufferable and stuck up. They just come on GAF and lurk and then post things they read here as if they are ground breaking news when a lot of the stories are really conjecture. They just want to keep their page view high by posting lots of non news articles and they make tons of posts with misleading headlines to attract extra page views. It's sad. Kotaku were a lot better when they weren't owned by Gawker and they could ban trolls because people couldn't post through facebook. Hilary Goldstein ran that site well, before Crecente even started there.. Those were the days.. All the funny insightful posters were mercilessly trolled into leaving and the star commenters often routinely spout mean-spirited snarky comments. Like they were just friends with the hipsters who run the site, and that's why they were starred, not because they made insightful comments. Destructoid is just as bad. We need some blogs that are all about gaming and aren't all high on themselves. And that aren't bribed by companies into hyping every game and acting like they like certain games and game systems when you can totally tell they are downplaying the bugs and weaknesses that are talked about on other websites..

I find the whole thing kinda fascinating.

Before, you could get drunk, spout random shit, and it was really just between you and that other person unless you were at a bar and friends got involved. Then things would either get straightened out or you ended up hating each other's guts and that's it.

Here though... we have a case of someone getting drunk and forgetting that it's the Internet. Those rules don't apply. And in the case of "blindly swinging" at someone that has a certain level of notoriety, there's a whole 'nother aspect to it.

It's a tough lesson to learn.

I get where some frustrations may have been rooted though. Sometimes you get sick of watching fake people pretend to be a real part of something you love. More often it seems like it's the rule than the exception.* I suspect he'll be using Google a little more often from now on - especially when he's had something to drink.

*If that's indeed what his original sentiment was.

I don't think much of Jim regardless of his little fight. Nor do I think much of anything about the woman he fought with. Felicia, otoh, much respect.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but perhaps you should google. She became famous because of her love for World of Warcraft. She's been in bed with the business longer than this person has been out of high school I bet.

I don't know any nice people that would call anyone a feminazi slut. Maybe they do things differently over there, but that's the definition of being a pretty awful person.

Most people in the this thread seem to be completely oblivious that felicia is a producer/writer/actor along with being a gaming a geek and is doing a nice job of mainstreaming our favorite pastime. She is far more driven and capable than almost everyone here, especially Perez.

IF he ever used that twitter to do stuff with work, then its fair game to be canned for that.

Ya it's not a mass conspiracy. There is a reason he is so disliked by many. It's because of the way he acts. His constant sarcasm, constantly trolling in his articles and reviews, disrespectful to people on social media, acts like an asshole in your own comment section often. There is a reason people usually do not like a person, it does not just happen from nothing.

Why did he have to stoop to her level? Why not be witty or just ignore her?

Feeding into the problem doesn't make it justified, even if she did deserve it.

I think the fact that the Destructoid folks are surprised at this is because they must have some sort of disconnect with "people like us" - take that how you will.

It should be obvious, but it isn't - that's indicative of another issue entirely...

The real test of a person's reputation isn't when they're in charge, it's when they've left for something else. When he finally goes too far over the line and gets canned then we'll find out how popular his shtick really is with his co-workers.

To a certain extent, his statements have some validity to them. The Guild was fine for what it was, but she isn't very talented as an actress and efforts to expand beyond The Guild have reflected that. She seems nice enough though so I don't really see why the guy would have randomly taken a swipe at her. I've never been to Destructoid's site personally but I don't really go to any game site since GAF meets all my needs.

He's right about Wil Wheaton being opportunistic as well but I can't really fault the guy. He's probably only known by the general public at this point as the dude from Big Bang Theory. Gotta stay relevant any way you can.

Now I'll remember him as the guy who told a bunch of people, via Twitter, to go back to beating off alone if you don't like Felicia Day. Or somesuch.

Wait he was on that show? I know he's guested on Eureka several times along with Felica Day ironically but never knew he showed up on that show. Course I don't watch that show but like once every so maybe that's why. lol

Yeah, he guest stars on occasion as the nemesis to Sheldon (the main character essentially). They recently patched things over but I'm sure he'll be back to torment him later!

Interesting. I always wanted to like that show but just couldn't the time or two I saw it. Maybe it's because I never caught it from the start. Maybe one of these days I'll go back and try watching the series from the start.

I think its stupid to fire someone who asks a few questions..
I dont see them as hard, and not fire-worthy.

He just asked what she had done for the industry.. If you get fired for that, nobody wants to open up their mouth.

I also wonder what she have done for the industry?. some voiceovers?

He also guests on eureka but you'd probably remember him more if you were a fan of Star Trek TNG. He played the doctor chicks kid.

I'm not familiar with either of those shows, but Eureka is in my Netflix queue. So I'll get to it at some point once I finish the 6 seasons of Supernatural.

I also wonder what she have done for the industry?. some voiceovers?

I guess what I still don't understand is why does it matter? Are we having a biggest dick contest? Whip our your credentials and I'll whip out mine? What does that serve? She's hugely famous for various reasons. One of those reasons is her love of games, which she expressed in the popular The Guild web series. She's done voice overs and countless TV shows. She's also really cute, which I'm sure benefits her. I'm glad she accepted his apology and then said nothing more. She doesn't need to defend herself. And she sure as hell doesn't need anyone defending her...which I guess I just failed at.

Yeah. He's a D list actor who found a niche and a fanbase for himself by embracing his "geek cred" for having played Wesley Crusher. In order to stay relevant he has to self promote like crazy.

Oh and his best performance was in the film Stand By Me. It's an adaptation of Stephen King's short story "The Body". The film's fron 80's. It's a coming of age flick set in the 1950s with a pretty famous cast: River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell, Corey Feldman, Keifer Sutherland, John Cusack, Richard Dreyfuss. Wil Wheaton's character is the protagonist.

Haha... you are. I wasn't claiming that Felicia was. I know her work and I don't think she's insincere at all. I was saying that you do meet girls, and in my experience more often than not, who fit the description of riding the game train to popularity without actually caring about gaming. Depending on his exposure, I can see him being skeptical. However, I also find it a tad baffling how you can be writing for games and game culture and not already be familiar with Ms. Day.

Pretty obvious why she's popular (hurr cute gamer gurlssss), but i'll say she's popular among casuals only and besides Spike's VGA's I haven't seen her anywhere. He was instigating her, I don't think it was needed.

Oh hark another strawman about a tired and overused trope when it comes to female subplots and story lines. God forbid fiction of any type ever undergo criticism for trite and shitty writing.

What strawman? You're only showing how aggressive you are towards people who are trying to discuss. You see the world as black or white, you pick an argument and decide what's right and what's wrong, but criticism doesn't work like that. The fact that you ignore Bergman's The Virgin Spring shows your ignorant way of discussing. Tropes aren't bad per se since everything can be considered a trope, you can find good writing and bad writing, but to you everything about rape/revenge is bad and shitty.
You want discussion but all you do is point out fingers and judge everything by your manichean view.
