I wonder if this is the place for this question

Has it ever been stated whether or not you will be able to play Wii games on the tablet? I was thinking of getting Xenoblade, but I know for sure I will not have time to play the whole thing for a while, and defiantly not on my main TV (I am one of the gamers that the whole "off the main screen" schtick appeals to).

Hmm. No idea if it's possible, but I wonder how far away you'd have to be for the wiimote to work properly. I think gaming on the tablet alone would be fine if held in your hands because it would be close to your eyes. If you had to have it a distance the small screen size would be a deterrent to me. Without having actually put this theory to a test, of course.

Hopefully I'm wrong 'cause I just got metroid prime trilogy and doubt I'll finish it before launch. =)

OK, there's an interesting Wii U experience review on GameFAQs, (yeah I know, don't judge me!), which suggests that the Wii U is only compatible with Motion Plus WiiMotes.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/631516-wii-u/63483225

Searching back, Iwata appeared to suggest the same thing back at E3 2011.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/306219/wii-u-to-support-motion-plus-controllers-only/

Is this news? It would make sense to me. Wii M+ never really got the chance to take hold and the idea of spending another 5 years with the same old Wiimote when Nintendo have made something superior seems like a bad move.

On the other hand, I can see a lot of "Waaah! My Wiimote doesn't work!" complaints too. Unless, of course, it comes with a M+ controller in the box....
Maybe it'll be a thing where the standard Wii remote still works, but Nintendo will stop manufacturing them (haven't they already?) and not really advertise it. Sort of like how you can use the Cube controller on Wii but for every game that can use it, they just say Classic Controller instead.

I doubt they'd let it play Wii games and not let you use Wii remote.

My thoughts exactly, why would they require Motion Plus when the vast majority of Wii games don't use it at all?

I always thought it made sense to support wiimotes for backwards compatibility (wii games only) with motion + being required for wii u games that utilize motion controls. This way Nintendo still sells a ton of $10 add ons and doesn't completely abandon a vet lucrative accessory market while still keeping previous wii owners relatively happy. Though it may be confusing.

Because the Wii Remote+ isn't being included in the Wii U box to play Wii games, but to play new Wii U games. Backwards compatibility is a useful thing, but not really a huge selling point these days. That and they sold over 27 million copies of Wii Sports Resort, which shipped with the Motion+ controller, so they know people like it and there are plenty of the controllers out there.

I think people expecting megaton announcements at these Nintendo Directs need to get their expectations in check, you are in my humble opinion just setting yourself up for disappointment.

Nintendo have said many times this year that they are all about 'Launch day / window software', until the system launches all we will see are the same games we have already seen.

The next Nintendo Direct will focus on the other half of the OS, the online infrastructure and the Eshop i think, if there is one more after the console launches we may see some announcements of cross platform games or partnerships but people expecting to see even Starfox or F Zero nevermind EAD Mario, Metroid, Zelda or Retro's game revealed are living in cloud cuckoo land imo.

Those last four games along with Smash Bros and Mario Kart are almost 100% locked in for the next two E3's.

Considering the console is now less than four months from launch why not focus on the already great line up of games revealed ?, Pikmin 3, Zombi U, P-100, Lego City, Nintendo Land and NSMB U to name but six.

Concerning the lack of EA announcements this close to launch, i don't think Fifa or Madden 13 exist for Wii U, EA will support the console but they will want to launch their first batch of games all running on the '2014 engines' (Winter 2013).

I think this is the same as the reason we have not seen Blops 2 or WWE 13 for Wii U either, they will come but it will be the winter 2013 editions.

Would you really want to put out sports games against those six games i just listed on a console with a zero install base, i wouldn't.

Nintendo has to hype up past launch that's why, that's why I'm expecting eShop, Virtual Console, Nintendo Network news at the next Nintendo Direct, and the 2013 games at the Fall Conference which was said.

.

The EA event was clearly embargoed- the invite explicitly said Wii U games would be shown.

And we also know Japanese 3rd party stuff is coming.

If this is such a major issue, what about all these younger developers who sign on to work at Nintendo? Surely Nintendo themselves must have a talent bleed problem of their own. If any other development house can't hack it, those kids wouldn't know what they're in for.

And yet we hear the opposite, that Nintendo has some of the lowest staff churn in the business.

See where I am having a problem sorting this out?

Younger devs wanting to come in and learn, meaning they're able to be molded a certain way, is not the same as experienced ones that have become set in their ways in an environment that's not the same as Nintendo's. That dynamic increases (for lack of a better word) when you're talking about experienced Western developers.

Sure some of the younger ones may eventually want to set out and do their own thing, but they are in a much better position to adapt to how Nintendo does things.

After E3 I will never predict what they'll show again, sorry :lol

And expecting megatons is part of the fun for me

Same. Now that I understand they only show games that are being released only so far out, it makes a big difference in expectations.

Interesting. I really have no clue what it would be. A so far unannounced Wii U version of a 3rd party game? Doubt it. A unannounced Wii U exclusive? Seems unlikely. I would say its a first party title he knows about, but Nintendo seemed pretty adamant that their E3 lineup was their launch window lineup.
I'm thinking EA since they've been completely silent other than the ME3 port. Wouldn't necessarily be original since the guy mentions getting AC3 too, so it could just be another simultaneous release port.

EA launched "next gen" Madden to a single console with with zero install base last time...and the CEO said Wii U is the first next gen console, who knows what'll happen with it this time.

I don't think EA is giving Wii U anything but EA Sports and Mass Effect.

This could well be the case but why oh why would Nintendo try and keep the fact that the massively popular Fifa and Madden franchises are on the way for the console ?...

If EA are making the 2013 editions of those game for Wii U then those logos should have been at least shown on the big screen at E3, along with WWE 13 and Blops 2, (would have taken literally 10 seconds to say 'here's some of the other support coming to Wii U this fall').

Massive, massive casual appeal.

Because Nintendo is being stupid and not talking about anything but launch-window titles and not letting anyone else talk about anything but launch-window titles.

Nintendo would be making another grave mistake if they do not show people what is coming down the line. It would be the the exact same thing that happened with the 3DS. People knew the games were coming so that helped but the software wasn't there day one. Why would they essentially do the same by showing us what will be there day one but not show what to expect later on?

I agree with you, but isn't that like a completely different mistake?

I agree with you, but isn't that like a completely different mistake?

The mistake Nintendo made with the 3DS imo was that it launched with no 'killer app', the Wii U is fine on all bases with the likes of Zombi U, AC 3 and Pikmin for the more core games, Nintendo Land and NSMB U for the more casual gamers and JD4 and SN for the really casual crowd.

It's going to be interesting to see exact dates for the 'launch window' games, i will cry if Pikmin 3 isn't out before Christmas :'(.

Surely Fifa and Madden 13 would be considered launch window titles tho.

It's more than that. The size of the bet by the third party in question directly affected the amount your embargo got lifted @ E3 from what I can tell.

Nintendo: All launch software
Ubisoft: 2 exclusive titles, a bunch of exclusive content: All launch software
WB: 1 exclusive title, 1 title with exclusive content: got to show Scribblenauts and Batman on stage (probably their whole lineup) Injustice announced but not shown on Wii U
TT Games (not sure who publishes these, WB?) LCS shown
THQ: 3 seconds of Darksiders, launch period is nonexclusive, late ports with minimal effort involved. Basically just there to confirm that "yes it's still coming"
EA: ME3 shown, probably all multiplatform stuff from them
Sega: Aliens CM shown very briefly, probably all multiplatform stuff here too
Namco: TT2 coming, can't remember if they made it or not

You get the picture. Make a big bet, get stage time. Port a few multiplatform titles, better be an early announcement or a huge company or NO SOUP FOR YOU.

I'd guess we're still missing a few things that'll make launch window here in the US/Euro. My guess is that it's going to be some combination of a couple EA sports titles plus a couple additional mutiplatform titles from Activision. As it stands I'm fine with how launch is shaping up out here.

JP launch window is a total mystery outside N's titles and TT2... we'll see what they show but at this point things look thin on the ground which is less than thrilling.

I'm very possibly being too optimistic, but logic tells me Japanese 3rd party support will be better than from the West.

Nintendo has a lot better relationships with Japanese companies (duh) and the market is very different.

I assume Japanese 3rd parties generally had dev kits longer than Western 3rd parties, maybe with the exception of Ubisoft.

I know some of you aren't the biggest IGN fans, but I follow Rich(the head Nintendo guy there) on twitter and he said he is heading to Japan on Monday for something work related. Anyone know if there is any Nintendo events going on this week?

Not that I know of.

There is no reason to just support Motion+ only remotes. None at all. M+ is just a more accurate version of the normal remotes. You can play all the games with the old remotes assuming the developer supports accelerometer only motion of course.

Possible Tank Tank Tank box art?

I just hope the WiiU covers (boxes) aren't as bland as the Wii ones, or straight copies like DS to 3DS. Especially getting sick of all the white.

Same here.

The 3DS boxes at least have the banner on the opposite side and are thinner to differentiate them from the DS ones. Hopefully the difference between the Wii and Wii U boxes is big enough to make them stand out from each other.

I wouldn't mind that little tag in the corner if the rest is basically full bleed cover art...of course that could get confusing if the others also go minimal with their console branding too.

(I'd rather have Tank Tank Tank be a download game though...)

I don't think that's the official Wii U box art. Looks like a placeholder... I hope.

Nah, I like Richard George for the most part. He's pretty professional and breathes new life into the Nintendo team. Audrey Drake annoys me, however, with her amateurish writing and fanboyism. But she could improve.

(Off topic, but I just realized that Jack DeVries was laid off a few months ago. I liked him...)

Breaking news: The Wii U to play video games?

:p

I've got $452 saved up. I think that's enough for a black console, pro controller and one game at least.

Quick! Someone alert Wii U Daily!

(I'm having way too much fun ridiculing that website, heh. Maybe I should sprinkle in some Zelda Informer, too.)

Luckily I'm working this summer, so I'm saving up more than enough money for the Wii U. This will be my first home console I'll be buying on my own. Right now I'm thinking white Wii U, white Pro Controller, and three to five games.

LCS is exclusive to Nintendo platforms. (3DS version will be released as well) And published by Nintendo.

Btw, I think it would be safe to assume that Bandai-Namco will present the biggest support from Japan right?

I think Tecmo Koei and Namco Bandai are the surest bets for Japanese support.

Obviously some people have astronomically ridiculous expectations. But. But there is no secret Nintendo announces and releases almost double the games in Japan than it does world wide. Therefore, the Japanese Nintendo direct will absolutely have some new games. Of those new games, either we get lucky and see them at a later point, or never at all.
