Grid 2 announced for PC, PS3 and 360 - debut trailer, preview and screens [2013]

okay i admit i am one of the 95% behind the car view players mostly cause of the controller. Sounds a bit like they wanted to cut the costs. If i had a wheel for racing, i would be underwhelmed and "angry".

I play racing games with a pad and love the cockpit cameras, you don't need a wheel for that kind of stuff, hell you will find a lot of wheel users use the bonnet or bumper.

PGR 3 showed the world how a good in car camera can be when done well, everyone had their takes on it and some where done really well especially in dirt 2 and 3, to suddenly bin them is such a sad thought.

This game is going to be 40% track and 60% p2p, drift and shit I am calling it now, just like how dirt 3 was suppose to be back to it's rally roots, they even locked a stage out as dlc in that game (all the map info and menu icons were already in dirt 3 before the dlc was released)

Booo at the Dirt Showdown conversion of this series. What, the first game wasn't accessible enough for people?

You can dumb down your games to a point before you start to lose a big portion of your fanbase in exchange for the hope of the casual fan sales. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It'd be interesting to see the sales numbers of Showdown compared to Dirt. This philosphy put Monumental out of business with their take on the MotoGP license.

I'm really bummed about this. Need more info on licensed cars and tracks (come on WTCC/DTM/LMS cars), but at this point, I'm not sold at all.

edit- I think you're right Diablohead, I can see this focusing more on p2p, fictional street and drift races. They did mention Abu Dhabi, but no other tracks yet.

I played this game for many hours and I don't think I ever used the in-car view except for watching crashes... I guess it's important enough for some people, seems cheap and "budget-cutting" on Codies part. One of the cool things about the first game was the massive variety in game modes and tracks. There was one weird Japanese event where you had to race a car without touching it, at night time, which I didn't discover for ages. I hope they kept and improved the career mode where you build a racing team.

I thought that was the vita logo :'(

Reading, how does it work?

Codemasters® today announced that GRID® 2™, the long-awaited sequel to the BAFTA-award winning, critically acclaimed Race Driver: GRID™, is in production at Codemasters Racing Studios and set for a 2013 launch for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and PC.

I just want a new TRD3.

It had too many cars and real world tracks, plus all the interior views. You know how confusing that is? It just wasn't accessible enough for the mainstream market.

TOCA race driver 2 was golden on the xbox, I loved racing online in that game especially the touring car races, such a great set of memories from that game. It was one of the first console games to give you points for winning and remove them for losing like a trueskill.

@brotkasten obviously I didn't read it and watched the trailer..to be fair the logo is pretty heavily used in Vita as well, don't remember it as much on anything else, not even PS3. The startup of the Vita for example.

[wrong about the psp] and already had 2 logos for playstation.

Would have been so nice on vita. Portable grid :'(

Weren't there difficulty settings where you had to use cockpit? I almost feel like there were races that required it too. Because the default cockpit views were ass (thankfully somebody with intelligence released mods for the PC) and I needed to really know a track before I could switch to cockpit (since, again, cockpit was ass that blocked a lot of the road's view). Despite cockpits being ass in Grid, it's still what I used. Because ass is still better than the alternative. Speaking of which, maybe more than "5 percent" would have used cockpits, if, you know, they weren't ass that blinded you to road. Food for thought, Codies.

This looks absolutely wonderful to me. I've always felt like I was the perfect audience for the GRID and DiRT games since I love a good racing game but prefer to stay a few steps back from an all-out simulation. I'll definitely be picking this up.

I guess I'm in the 95% because I never use cockpit view in my racing games. The lack of true peripheral vision has always made it feel way too claustrophobic to me.

ZING! HA!
Awesome post. Which is awesome.
Sadly we probably won't see that many tracks in a game ever again.

Edit- 1-D_FTW, yeah, they seemed to have the in car view/camera pointed a bit down, into the cockpit compared to other games.

It's literally the first sentence in the OP, right after the pictures. I'm not hating on you, but I noticed again how people just don't care about reading the OP and that's annoying.

This would be great game for Vita. Same as any other Codemaster racing game.

[I will never forgive them for that shoddy port of 3DS F1 game to the Vita! God dammit never!]

No in-car mode is a weird choice.

Only 5% play that way? Sure, that's fine, but that's 5% that probably won't buy it now!

Also, do people really play racing games with a wheel in bumber/chase cam? Seriously?

I do, actually. It just looks weird to me seeing two sets of hands and wheels. (My hands on the steering wheel, and the pilot's hands and wheel on the screen.) It also restricts too much view of the track because you can only see through the windshield, which makes it look like my screen is only a tiny fraction of what it really is and makes it more difficult to play/see around. That doesn't mean I'm happy about taking the feature out, though as it should be a standard feature.

That's just because they use awful implementation for the cockpit. Maybe it's because they have grand ambitions and the consoles just can't hack it. But to not put a slider into the PC version was just dumb. Cockpits are awesome, just not when they create giant blind spots.

I know you're not the only person who complains about the hands thing, but I always find that weird. I'm always focused on the horizon. Forget about seeing my physical hands, I rarely even notice the hands on screen.

I always figured the attraction to a wheel was exactly that though, the 1:1 replication of your hands on a real (fake) wheel appearing on-screen as you turned your fake hands around the steering wheel.

Guess you learn something every day though!

They better not drop cockpit view from Dirt 4.

At this point it really wouldn't surprise me if they dropped the cockpit view, real cars, and made a completely over the top futuristic racing game out of it. RALLYCROSS IN SPACE! X-Games of the future!

Listening to fans, how does that work?
We want more Rally. Here's more Trailblazer, fictional places where'd you never have rally racing, GYMKHANA, oh and here's Dirt Showdown since you wanted even more Gymkhana.
We want the old Toca back with more licensed disciplines and tracks. Here's fictional street races and drifting.

Have to get that casual fan! Their dollars are worth more!

The attraction is you can feel the road. That's what makes FFB immersive. Anyone who's fixated on wheels (real or physical) isn't focused on the horizon like you're supposed to be.

I really can't believe that they took the cockpit view out. Their reasoning is even stranger.

Wait, WHAT?!

LOL, will Grid 2 be another Codemasters game with five tracks and 15 cars like Dirt 2, 3 and Showdown, and tons of DLCs?

I used to preorder CM games, but now I'm considering IF one day I'll spend my money on it on some Steam sales...

In one of the DiRT showdown threads we were talking about how we didn't really want any of that stuff and how we really just wanted a proper DiRT 4. Helios responded with this:

Helios_CM said:
We hear you, and we haven't forgotten about the fans of our rally fans. If you dig around a few DiRT Showdown interviews you'll see references to 'DiRT 4'.

I think they just made DiRT Showdown to make the most of the work they had already done on those modes and to allow them to leave them out of the next proper DiRT game.

That's what they are saying right now and I honestly hope that it's true but it wouldn't be the first time that they bullshit us.

Well, apparently they did drop the destruction derby mode in GRID 2, because it's now featured in Showdown.

The other big omission is Destruction Derby mode. Yes, it was great fun in GRID, but you can play DiRT Showdown for that now. 'But it's not the same!' you're probably thinking and you're right. We'll miss it too. But the argument from the team is that all the destruction and close racing is present in the street racing anyway. And one of the few criticisms we have of the first game is that some of the modes were under-developed, destruction derby included. But that's not going to happen here – everything that's in is going to be done properly.

Totally looking forward to it.
The one was amazing, such a shame the MP was a trollfest with people making barricades or going the wrong way.

If the screens weren't awful enough...

Wednesday August 8 th (8 AM UK) – Codemasters® today announced that GRID® 2™, the long-awaited sequel to the BAFTA-award winning, critically acclaimed Race Driver: GRID™ , is in production at Codemasters Racing Studios and set for a 2013 launch for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and PC.

Revealing the first of the game’s new locations, including Chicago and Paris, the debut GRID 2 trailer video is now showing at www.gridgame.com and captures a snapshot of the relentless, high-impact aggressive thrills that lie at the core of GRID 2 ’s cinematic race experience.

GRID 2 will challenge players to be fast, be first and be famous as they enter a stunning new world of competitive motorsport. In pre-production for two years, GRID 2 is now in full development on the latest evolution of the award-winning EGO Game Technology Platform. Following the success of GRID , which set new standards for damage, AI, visuals and introduced the Flashback time rewind feature - now adopted by many racing games – GRID 2 will again raise the gameplay and technological bar for motorsport gaming and remain true to the series’ core value – it’s all about the race.

“GRID’s back and we’re going to make street, track and road racing exciting again,” said Clive Moody, Executive Producer. “The core design philosophy for GRID 2 is that we treat the race as a character, not a consequence of simply putting cars on tracks. Everything that goes into the game impacts on that second-to-second, in the moment, blockbuster drama – the feel and personality of the race.”

“We’re pushing boundaries once again with what can be accomplished in the genre via new tools, technology and innovations. In single-player, split-screen and online, the next-generation of the EGO Game Technology Platform will power graphics, AI, handling and damage advancements that will immerse players in the racing experience like never before. Like its predecessor, GRID 2 will put the sheer thrill and adrenaline rush of the race at the heart of the experience. It’s what we call Total Race Day Immersion.”

In an expansive career mode, players will experience aggressive wheel-to-wheel racing against advanced AI where each spectacular race unfolds with cinematic immersion. Building on the handling model from GRID , the new TrueFeel Handling System will use real physics to hit a sweetspot between accessibility and simulation and deliver handling that is approachable yet challenging to master.

Going behind the wheel of a handpicked selection of automotive icons spanning four decades and three continents – USA, Europe and Asia – players will race their way to the top of a new, evolving world of motorsport. From Paris to Abu Dhabi, Miami to the sun-kissed California coast and beyond, beautifully created city streets, licensed circuits and edge-of-control mountain roads will become home to the most visceral and exhilarating races in games.

GRID 2 will also set new standards for a racing multiplayer experience with an entirely distinct and extensive gameplay component and unique progression system. Deep customisation options and integration with RaceNet* – the online community portal for Codemasters Racing games which tracks player’s races, rewards and rivals – will offer further immersion and connectivity in GRID 2 ’s new world of motorsport.

Fans can keep up with all the latest updates straight from the studio by speeding over to www.gridgame.com and www.facebook.com/gridgame or follow the team at www.twitter.com/gridgame.

No, thanks.

Just like they are cutting costs with the cockpit view, here is hoping they also release the PC version for $40 or less, not buying for $60 without cockpit view.

Oh I'm aware of those statements. And I hope that's right. But they've taken this "more accessible" view farther and father each game. We'll see.
I'd love it if they did a fully licensed WRC game, but I don't really see that happening. Too limited of an audience in their marketing eye I'm sure.

Regardless of how "accessible" the games are I'm just glad to see that the focus of GRID 2 is going to be purely on the racing. That's what I love about Codemasters racing games, they always seem to cut out a lot of the fluff (and even a lot of the deep simulation type stuff) that I don't really care for. Sure, some of the modes aren't nearly as fun as others (Gymkhana is a great example) but at least I'm spending my time in a car competing instead of doing something I don't find to be very fun.

Also, besides the omission of the cockpit view I really don't see how anything they've said so far should come as a surprise. This game doesn't look like it's aiming for a broader market than the first GRID to me. There is nothing analogous to Gymkhana being added to DiRT.

I can tolerate the absence of in car view if they compensate it with 30+ tracks.

But if they come offering a 6 track game like Dirt, I'll let it rotten in the shelf.
