Both may have few similarities here and there but Shenmue game play is different than sleeping dogs.

Agreed to the max, anyone that says otherwise is making a really odd comparison.

Shenmue is a semi realistic detective game with Virtua Fighter combat complimenting it, with the environments being entirely realistic.

Yakuza is a really simple RPG with fun combat and lots of side activities/minigames, with the environments in later games looking fantastic/realistic.

The only thing they share is Sega as a publisher.

Shenmue(I mean the original, not the sequel) had one thing most games like Sleeping Dogs and Yakuza lack(and I say this as a Yakuza fan): personality. You were really part of a town, not just some guy wandering the streets.

The voice acting in Shenmue was mess mostly cause it was done in Japan and then put into a computer to change it a bit. Also most the voice actors even Ryo where found off the street basically.

That's the best way I could describe it, and according to interviews and the Shenmue wiki Shenmue started out as a Virtua Fighter RPG. If you look at the move list in Shenmue you can actually perform a lot of different strikes, kicks, and grabs.

That video had a much stronger effect on me than anticipated.
