The Virtual Boy has returned for your soul.

This is EXACTLY what I thought it was at first. They should strap that onto anyone use Promethean Vision, as punishment. (Also, visual signal.)

Now this. This is awesome.

I'm okay with Halo 4's armor, and I do appreciate that it's more athletic and less hulking, like Reach's armor. But the helmets are borderline grotesque. It's like a Spartan's face got shoved in a blender.

Someone in a gaming side thread a few weeks ago put it well when they said that all the helmets look like crinkled up tin foil. There's so much weird geometry. I'd say it's good in concept, but not well realized at all.

I can definitely see what you're saying, but hell, I personally like it. I'm sure they'll have a lot of classics to go with the weird stuff.

Maybe it's the creative side of me but what is going on with the helmets? I like stylish flashy stuff, these seem like they get circle object and added a random unneeded square or rectangle on it.

No sarcasm, I love how 343 doesn't seem to give a single fuck about keeping the armor within the confines of the hitbox. Should be a lot of fun to see all these bizarre armor sets on the battlefield.

You know what? I like the weird ass helmets, they remind me of the excitement of getting new helmets in Halo 3.. Something about these things scream 'fun' so I am pretty pleased with what we have seen so far..which now that I think about it, we have seen a lot, haha. Im just hoping they still have some more simplistic, "old school" styled helmets like MCs, the Halo Wars variant, etc.

oh, might as well post the AR skin:

I like this so much more than the the standard AR look, this has a more complex and interesting style without looking crazy.

I'm just so happy we can finally change the footwear. No matter what you do in Reach, you always had giant metal clown shoes that were so UGLY.

Changeable ass-plates. Never forget.

Now if only one of the adjustable poses on your Spartan Card allows you to show off your butt.

Kat's ass from Halo Reach will cost ALL THE CREDITS, but it will be worth it. You can even put it on your Male Spartan and get a Stupid Sexy Flanders thing going.

This is the best this gun has ever looked, possibly will ever look.

I like that skin expect for the straight vertical lines. The other details subtlety and to and highlight the angles of the gun, but those solid vertical chunks just kill all visual flow. Bleh.

But then, it's a skin for gun I'll never use. Who the hell cares?

Hard surface art is my bread and butter.

I prefer the details to be more localized and subtle rather than big painted on pattern and graphic designs over basic noisy diffuse metal textures.

Something like this:

Maybe not the best example as it is a little busy and some details are a little over the top and noisy, but the point is it's got readible details at a variety of frequencies and it's pretty dynamic in terms of materials and reflections adding interest to a pretty simple gun.
And most importantly the gun would fit the Xbox 360 spec pretty well.
It's a pretty cheap shader, average polycount and still manages to have good material definition and really pushes the specular reflections, but I guess it doesn't really fit with Halo 4's style.

If they had the system specs and where really willing to push their guns to the next level, they would need to get some more advanced shaders that could represent the more subtle specular highlight falloff of metals and they various other layers/materials around them.

Here is a turntable of an MP7 made with all these things in mind.

note how the color of the plastics and metals change with the camera and light angles and how much detail is present exclusively from specific angles. You can even see the oil left from the operator's hand.

(Seriously, watch the video, the gun is awesome because of teh detail that pops out when it's in motion)

This requires a much more expensive shader and dynamic object lighting system as well as a whole 'nother multichannel texture to take full advantage, so it is a bit to expensive for most games this gen.

Maybe next gen...

I am still really disappointed in CS:GO's/BF3's and really just this whole gen's weapons from a technical perspective (With the exception of Crysis 2, where they actually do a great job with their hard surface art), but that's another story...

Yeahhhh, that's way better than any of the skins we've seen.

*sees Scanner*

How do I unsee Scanner?
Can't believe that & Unicorn got approved. What the hell.

Normal LE skin looks good.
Hey hey hey hey, the unicorn armor is awesome. Though, admittedly, totally absurd.

off topic but does any one know the reason Spartan 4's take fall damage? I don't get it, after shield health was introduced in Halo 2 fall damage was gone. Now Shields are back but fall damage is too. Can someone explain this to me?

...?
Because they feel it better suits the gameplay they want to foster?

Or do you mean canonically? Shields can only take so much hurt.

It's always been gameplay based. In Halo 2 they decided to get rid of it and it was brought back because it enhances vertical play, simple as that.

Fall damage was removed from 2 because it didn't play nice with the sword lunge, from what I can remember.

I actually prefer how the games play without fall damage (mostly because of how it opens up map design possibilities), but I think it was one of those happy accidents that are so common in the series.

I was like, why should I give a shit about multiplayer helmets and suits, then I remembered I'm planning to play some Spartan Ops with my buds. fuuuuuuu.

Scanner helmet is atrocious.

Famitsu posted even a better pic of the Limited Edition armor:
Now this is hot.

I've been attempting to beat Sheol with Maggy nightly for the past week in TBoI and I cannot fucking do it. I'm getting extremely fed up.

Anyway, what's the context of those two helmets appearing in Famitsu?

Good lord is this a hard pep. Keeps falling apart.

I might start resining it now and fiberglass the insides of the struts before closing them up.

Yeah, looks really nice. I might use the AR now.

I'm happy about skin variants. I'm disappointed by retailer exclusives.

"War Games Map Pass" includes three in-game contents
- Spartan-IV Helmet SCANNER
- Spartan-IV Helmet STRIDER
- FALCON emblem

Oh, okay.

Also, has it been covered as to whether or not the Limited Edition includes the War Games map pass? I'm assuming that's the reason that you get access to the three packs.
