Entire collection of chapters for £19.99...
Absolute rip off, but I have £70 iTunes credit from buying a new MacBook so I might make the purchase if the prologue is any good.

It's so strange seeing that screenshot of Yggdrasil, the world tree as I associate that with the Tales Of... series.

Comparable to similar games on the same platform? FFT was released in 1998. I'm sure the cost of porting it to iOS was negligible. Exactly what 'value' am I paying for here?

Well I'll stop derailing, but "comparable to similar games" is how you race to the bottom on iOS pretty fast. I was trying to get at a fair price for what goes into making games like FFT, or GTA3. Would $1 be ridiculous, but $5 is fair? I think it should be closer to $10-15 personally.

This is why Nintendo will never put out games on iOS, nor should they. How do you define "comparable" with a Mario platformer? Compared to other 2D platformers? Maybe if you're fine ignoring the lack of quality comparable games have in nearly every area.

Anyway, nevermind. I think $30 is definitely too much. Should have been $10 at most for FF: Dimensions.

When does it finally hit "undervalued" status for you then? $4, $3, $2, $1? Free? Never? Just curious what you think the right price should be.

GTA3 is 10$ on Steam. Paying 5$ for a worse-looking version with worse controls sounds about fair.

Whoa @ price. I normally don't agree with all the ragging on SE's iOS prices as I feel it helps in widening the niche for more elaborated/expensive games on the platform (more than 0.99$ at least...), but this is indeed steep. I don't see a lot of customers thinking this is anywhere near worth it.

I would just make a couple of points:

1) Yes, making a game on the scale of FFT costs a lot more than making one on the scale of Angry Birds or Cut The Rope (or Final Fantasy Dimensions), and shouldn't be similarly priced. But that isn't what iOS FFT is. It's a port of a game that's over a decade old which also ran poorly for some. And I can get it for $10 on PSN (albeit without the PSP translation.)

2) S-E charging more than everyone else on a platform isn't an issue specific to iOS. The Square Tax is a documented phenomenon.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with TWEWY 2.

If it's a high-quality game with a lot of content, I'm just fine paying $15. Does this game match that criteria? I have no idea yet.

What I do not like is that SE's content is not universal, and has a staggered release schedule -- plus it's more expensive on iPad and not that much better than what you would find non-HD.

From the blog, someone posted this: "the original Japanese game is 3 hours per chapter, 40 hours in total. But it looks like for this one after the first chapter, the remaining 11 have been combined into 3 big chapters."

So 40 hours of game for $30. I don't think its a bad proposition. You have just been conditioned to cheap games on mobile.

The thing is this game, which is a port of a feature phone game, is $30, while other games that evidently had much more effort (i.e. are not enhanced ports) gone into them such as Chaos Rings or Drakerider, who are built specifically for iOS, are half (more or less) the price at launch. HALF! Chaos Rings has actual 3D models, pre-rendered backgrounds, voice acting... and yet it is way cheaper than FFD as a whole. This is just SE taking advantage of the FF brand.

Yggdrasil is in like a bazillion Japanese games, they're kind of obsessed with it.

Actually it seems to be a phenomenon that affects certain Japanese debs/pubs. Sorcerian for iOS and Steins;Gate cost around $30 too.

I'm not sure if FFD is universal (I think it might be), but I'm pretty sure pricing will be the same if it's not universal.

Also despite all this, I'm making the OT for the game, it should be done sometime today :).

Wow, I was pretty interested in this but not for $30. It sounds like it's got a decent amount of content, but I don't much like playing games on my Droid phone so there's no way I'm paying that much for an inferior gaming experience.

The After Years was what, like $40 if you bought all chapters on Wiiware? This was an expected price. Unfortunate, but expected.

That said, if they put this on 3DS for $30, something tells me we wouldn't be having the same reaction. We're just conditioned to IOS stuff being ridiculously cheap. (And it really should be - look at it!)

Hoping this is good though. I might pay for it if people say it's legit good. The idea of an original SNES-era FF game on my phone is pretty appealing. Too bad I don't have a lot of hope for them to put any real effort into it.

I'm sorry, I must have misread, I thought the OP said $30. Cause man I had a good laugh for a bit. So what's the real price?

I'll wait until the Ouya release, and I'd be happy to buy the first couple of chapters.

Not a bad structure though. Pay a little square enix tax to try it, then full price if it's worth it to you. At least it isn't $30 out of the gate.

Not saying that $30 is reasonable for an iPhone game, but it's an interesting attempt at a new model.

I'd consider it if it didn't look so awful in every possible way. I hate this high-res visuals that still want to be retro and ends up looking like bad flash game art. And some consistency, please, some character sprites are clearly more pixelated than others. Combat looks sloppy. Yeah, no Square Enix. All of that not counting the ridiculous price.

I'm not sure I would pay 30$ for a bundle of every square game on ios/android combined.

Insanity, and mean spirited gouging of their most loyal fans.

Such is the state of affairs across nearly all iOS (and Android) titles, sadly. I also despise it.

They still haven't implemented any of the planned updates for FFT iPad. It's now 6 months after release. I'd like to give SE the benefit of the doubt on Dimensions, but looking at the screens, it doesn't appear they put much heart into the visuals or the dialogue. It's obviously to early to tell as the game isn't released, but they really look to be pushing the loyalty of their fans with this one. I'll still try the prologue, but I have low expectations.

Just watching this guy play makes the whole process look so awkward. Maybe it's just the guy playing but....you can't even move diagonally, and choosing spells/targets takes substantially longer than it would using buttons. I can't imagine playing a full game like this.

Please don't let this be the future of gaming...

Well that aspect seems appropriate to me seeing as how it's retro SNES FF inspired.

It's just too bad they are overcharging for this. I understand that they added unique sprites for each job for each character which was not the case in the original but man it doesn't seem like it's worth 30$.

The original game ripped some job sprites straight from FFV and modified them slightly. There was a female and male sprite for each job and each character only had a unique palette swap for each job. At least in the remake they've made an effort to correct that as you can see in the screenshot below. But still what I want to say is that it didn't have much efforts put into in the first place so unless they really revamped the whole thing I doubt the game is worth 30$

Examples (if you can't see Lenna, Bartz, Faris and Krile in there you are blind :) ) :

I think it's just that the guy is playing in a really weird position or is not good with touch screens, because touch screen spell selection is actually quicker since you just, you know, TAP on the spell or ability rather than having to scroll. Same for all menu selections really.

Isn't low price the reason why iOS titles are attractive? $30 sounds insane, if they want to charge that much they could release it on 3DS and Vita, both which have touch screens

Is there really a market for $30 iOS/Android games? Isn't the reason everyone migrate to iOS/Android because of the cheap $0.99 games? I would be really interested in the sales numbers for this title but too bad we'll probably never know.

I would pay $30 for an honest to goodness well made old school job system Final Fantasy.

On 3DS. Or Wii U. Or XBLA. Or PSN. Or PSP. Or Vita.

A perfect symptom of the entire "race-to-the-bottom" mentality that's plaguing mobile games.

30 dollars for a full length RPG? Sounds fair to me.

Do they reduce the prices?

I don't think they haven't drop Chaos Ring price yet.
You can usually expect price drops on older games in their library around the time a new one is released. Chaos Rings had a lot of random drops though, down to a variety of prices. So far it has been priced at $12.99, $9.99, $6.99, $5.99 and $3.99 (on iPhone but the iPad version followed similar price changes).

Why is everyone crying about the price at 20+ dollars? Isn't this basically a full final fantasy game and not a bunch of minigames like angry birds? Even at $30 dollar, it would still be at least $10 cheaper than a vita/3ds cart version. I agree with the others that small cheap mobile games are killing the industry.

So many people in this thread seem to be complaining about the price on the basis of the platform rather than the actual content that you're purchasing. That just strikes me as so bizarre, and totally contrary to the 'all mobile apps are cheap crap' and 'all games should be $60 blockbuster' opinions that I thought everyone here wanted to see disappear.

The game looks cheap and using The After Years as an example, the actual gameplay will probably be just as crummy as the visuals. It's going to be a cheaply made game, which is probably why it's a mobile/iOS exclusive thing. There's no quality checks or anything to go through. If they had talented people working on the game and believed in its quality, they would be looking for more traditional outlets. They're not trailblazing here either, because there's nothing seemingly noteworthy about the game.

Compared to other Vita/3DS game this is probably true, but I still think this game is better than 95% that's whatever on the iOS/Android platform.

That's not saying much.

There's probably a lot of like-minded RPGs that are of similar quality for $1 or $2 as well.

Guardian Saga, for one, $2. Cthulhu Saves the World just got an iOS release as well, also $2.

This is pretty much just brand exploitation.
