Still as pissed from Day 1 that Jimmy's not in this. Will still watch, but sucks knowing it could've been better.

Or maybe he would have brought it down. If the continuing storyline is good, Jimmy absense won't be a big deal.

Season 2 ended the only way it could have, it would have been a cop out if they made up.

Linky. On my phone.
You can go back to page 18 (100 posts per page) of this thread for some of it. A couple gems that people linked:
You fucked up bad hbo..Stupid lame ass motherfuckers wrote off the best actor that hbo has seen in years...Imho....ya Ill be watching nxt year JUST to see jimmy reapear and if not ..kiss my ass hbo for wasting such a great show ...get new writers at the very least and put jimmy back in it..FUCK
jimmy was for sure the best character.......true irish gasngster.....hbo is really gonna have to pull something out of their ass to continue the story line........they shouldnt have focused so much of the show on jimmy to just write him out........or maybe it was michael pitts fault, could have gotten cocky and said he wanted more money and mark walburg told him to go fuck himself bc lets not bull shit it people marky mark is a gangsta

Yeah, he had to go. It saddens me, but it was inevitable. Rewatching S2 has cemented this in my mind.

That was Jimmy's story. Being a bad (ie, shitty) gangster and bringing on his own destruction. It also moves Nucky's development forward in a decisive way.

Reminds me of Game of Thrones:
No one wanted Ned Stark to die, and in some part he was the principal protagonist, but his own honour was his undoing. The show suffers a bit for having lost that character (and actor), but gains more by having that death serve as a lesson and theme throughout the show. It was also an extremely powerful moment, just as Jimmy's death was.

(Yes I realize that the books are the source, but it makes more sense to talk about the show)

I remember being incredibly impressed when they killed him. It really hammered home that HBO and the writers of Boardwalk have the balls to do what is necessary for the sake of keeping the story's integrity.

These are balls that I wish the people behind (recent tv show)
Homeland
had.

Haha I was relieved that Jimmy was gone. I couldn't see it ending any other way. He didn't have the temperament to be an actual leader, so I'm glad they didn't try going down that road after some kind of character epiphany.

True. It also brought home the point that he was a broken man after his mother and the war. He came back damaged, and there really wasn't a place for him.

His 'exit' made me laugh.
Oh most definitely. It's annoying that there weren't a lot of people making quality gifs of Boardwalk Empire because that was a classic "bail out" if I've seen one.

What doesn't Van Alden get up to that makes one laugh?
Indeed. It's the supporting characters that really make this show.

Me after watching the season 2 finale " Well there goes my favorite character, fuck that there's noway I'm watching a season 3!"
Me now "Damn can't wait for season 3 to start!".. time truly heals all wounds.

I wouldn't be surprised if they keep Rothstein, Luciano and Capone in the background (for now).

Minor S3 trailer/pics spoilers:
For one, there's a new character whose development will probably eat up a big chunk of the season. Gillian and Harrow are coming back, too. They were normally present with Jimmy, so if they have continuing arcs then they'll be eating up some of that freed up screen time.

Best Buy now has the Season 1 and 2 7 disc sets for 35. Includes Blu/DVD/Digital Copies of each season.

Amazon will almost certainly match by release date. I like that this seems to be the new standard price for HBO releases.

I sent in a price match notice to Amazon and they have matched Season 2. Not season 1 yet (original blu only release is 34.99, but 7 disc is still 47), but I didn't actually send in a notice on that one.

If any of you lucky bastards still get tax free Amazon there you go.

I'm sticking with Best Buy because supposedly I will get a $10 coupon since I spent $50, and I have to pay tax anyways.

Awesome, bought. (tax free for a couple more years)

Hopefully they do the same with Luck, of course that one is still a few months off.

- Onion A|V Club's "The Walkthrough" feature: Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter on raising the stakes in season two
By the end of its first season, the HBO historical drama Boardwalk Empire had developed a reputation as the best show that nobody really loved. It won awards, drew decent ratings for cable, and was obviously a well-acted, well-written, well-directed, and painstakingly researched show, but Boardwalk Empire hadn’t inspired the kind of fanatical devotion that attended the likes of Mad Men, Breaking Bad, or The Sopranos—the show that many people expected Boardwalk Empire to be, given that creator Terence Winter had been one of the main Sopranos writers. But by the end of Boardwalk Empire’s second season, a real buzz began to develop, not necessarily because the show significantly improved—it was always high-quality—but perhaps because viewers grew more accustomed and attached to Boardwalk Empire’s enormous cast of characters and ambitiously sprawling plot, right around the time that Winter and his writers raised the stakes for both.

Boardwalk Empire’s second season begins in 1921, with the show’s protagonist, Atlantic City Treasurer Nucky Thompson (based on real-life politician Enoch Johnson, and played by Steve Buscemi) dealing with pressure from dangerously repressed Federal Prohibition agent Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon) and a coalition of friends-turned-enemies that includes his old mentor Commodore Louis Kaestner (Dabney Coleman), the Commodore’s formerly estranged son Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt), and Nucky’s own brother Eli (Shea Whigham). In Nucky’s corner: his live-in girlfriend Margaret Schroeder (Kelly Macdonald), though she has moral qualms about their arrangement, and about Nucky’s shady political dealings. Meanwhile, the mob bosses in New York—from the elegant Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg) to the more thuggish Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza)—are trying to decide whether to ally with Nucky or to follow The Commodore. The season follows this frequently violent power struggle, and weaves in dozens of other colorful characters, including upstart Chicago gangster Al Capone (Stephen Graham), the head of Atlantic City’s black community Chalky White (Michael Kenneth Williams), quirky Ohio bootlegger George Remus (Glenn Feshler), righteous Philadelphia mob boss Manny Horvitz (William Forsythe), scarred WWI vet/assassin Richard Harrow (Jack Huston), crusading US attorney Esther Randolph (Julianne Nicholson), and more.

Creator Terence Winter joined The A.V. Club for a detailed discussion of the show’s second season, which arrives this week on DVD and Blu-ray, in advance of the third season (which debuts Sunday, September 16.) In part one of four, Winter discusses the first three episodes, beginning with “21” and concluding with “A Dangerous Maid.”
This particular feature from the Onion A|V Club is usually pretty fascinating and worth a read. Check it out when you have some time.

Just finished Season 2. Anybody else find Van Alden hilarious? I'm not sure if he's intentionally written that way, but he's so crazy and self righteous, I can't help but laugh whenever he's on-screen.

Just blasted through the series myself. I feel like they toned him down in Season 2, which is good because he was over the top during the first season. Him
drowning that dude
was pretty ridiculous.

He's a great character but I think he's meant to be comic-relief at times.

I loved the penultimate episode to this season, the way it was shot in such a dreamlike haze was incredible.

Strangely, as I watched this show the first time I wasn't overly impressed. I remember feeling like it was somehow less than the sum of its parts. It's only through the passing of time, and brief snatches of the show recalled to memory that I felt maybe I'd been a bit too pessimistic.

I recently rewatched a few episodes and it's better than I remember.

Hope to see more Arnold Rothstein next year, Stuhlbarg is absolutely mesmerising.

- Onion A|V Club's "The Walkthrough": Boardwalk Empire showrunner Terence Winter dissects the show’s second season (Part 2 of 4)
Boardwalk Empire showrunner Terence Winter spoke with The A.V. Club about the second season of his show. Following part one, this section covers episodes four through six, beginning with “What Does The Bee Do?” and ending with “The Age Of Reason.”
Again, this is a good feature worth reading plus it helps you get ready for S3.

BEFORE season 3 airs? That's impossible lol.
Heh. They're way ahead of schedule this year!

Thanks Cornballer :D It helps me alot with the story so far :) I missed quite a few details from season 2

I finished up "Georgia Peaches" last night on my rewatch. Only two more episodes after this one, and things get completely out of hand for Jimmy. Nucky brings in the Irish Whiskey in the thompson machine gun deal and undercuts all of Jimmy's sales. On top of that Manny Horvitz decides to swing by and kill Angela. The last two are going to be tough to watch (incest and Jimmy's demise), but I'm looking forward to it.

It was a good refresher for me, too. It's been a while since it aired.
HBO aired a little 15 minute recap of Season 2.

Was helpful to me, considering I forgot most of it already
I saw that was on last night, but I didn't watch. Hopefully they get it up on youtube sometime soon.
