Game Informer October Cover: Super Mario Bros. U

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
A nintendo home console launch with a 2D mario plattformer ? You just have to be there day 1....even if im still not sold - lets see what next week will bring usw.

Damn, I miss the 2D drawings.

For a long time I criticized people who argued that Nintendo's games aren't for "mature" gamers. But that shit looks like it really is for babies. Mario has become ridiculious at how much it panders. How many fucking smiley faces and rainbow vomit of colors can we cram into one image? Dude bro grey and brown aesthetics are boring to look at but so is this.

And this comes from someone who loves Animal Crossing's aesthetic.

One side is trying WAY too hard to be "mature"
and other other is trying WAY too hard to be cute.
Either side is coming off naturally.

I like it. Definitely better looking than the old New SMB games.

Isn't this the 3rd Nintendo cover Game Informer's ever done, or something? One of them being Metroid Prime (3?) and the other being Skyward Sword? Or am I thinking of something else?

For what it's worth, Iwata said that the younger staff primarily worked on New SMB 2 while the veteran staff is handling New SMB U.

Man, would I wouldnt give for the awful main theme to be replaced with SMW/SMB 3 soundtrack remixes.

Nice cover.

I hate the direction the soundtrack is going in. I cannot stand the weird BWAH BWAH parts of the songs that the enemies dance to. It just sounds so terrible.

Well, at least computer Mario starts to look slightly better nowadays. I wonder why 3d Land still got an underwhelming render cover, since in the actual game there were several drawn pieces again.

Not really a fan of the new super art style. I hope this isn't the galaxy teams game

It isn't.

The last one before SS was Metroid Prime, I believe. As the OP stated, they had a Mario cover 16 years ago (presumably Mario 64.)

Correct. At least, Takashi Tezuka (who directed NSMB DS and Wii) is directing U.

They've done more than that if you go all the way back to when they first started. But I think 2004 is when they started landing major exclusives, and since then they've only had three Nintendo games on their cover (this would be the third).

Agreed.

I just wish Nintendo would take some chances with their art style again. It doesn't have to be overly cute. Like the sketch water color look of Yoshi's Island or even the more CGI plastic look of Yoshi's Story. Or Cell shade it like Wind Waker or Okami. Or go for a saturated bloom look like Fable or Trine. Just do... something. This is pretty terrible and boring.

Yeah, all signs are pointing to this game being the unique, well-made Mario made by the veterans over the course of a couple years everyone's looking for, while Mario 2 was a quickly made game that was more tried and true.

That's kinda...boring to be perfectly honest. At least a background with a stage not shown so far would have been better

and also lol at the yoshi pic

Nintendo's EAD Group #4 handles the New SMB titles. They're also known for doing Pikmin. I hope the team isn't spreading its resources too thin since its been working on 3 games simultaneously (Pikmin 3, New SMB 2, and New SMB U).

In 1999 and pre-1999 they did a lot of them. After that I think it's Prime 2, Skyward Sword, and some special sprite covers.

I think that ever since I got older I noticed that those baby yoshi looked inebriated / stoned.

Innocence slain.

Oh, I see, thanks. Well, I'm glad they seem to be putting out more Nintendo covers.

No shit, one of these games releases on 3 different consoles, the other one on a recently launched one.......

You say no shit but there's people arguing that it will be one of the biggest games of the year, even though it's releasing on a console that currently has 0 units sold.

It will, specially if you consider NSMBU will be selling like gangbusters during all the Wii U's lifetime.

Everyone who buys a Wii U for the next five years is going to buy New Super Mario Bros. U.
(Yes, I know you were being sarcastic.)
Clearly they'll all be buying Assassin's Creed III.

In all fairness, if the sales of NSMB DS are any indicator then it will actually be the biggest game of the years.

Ha!

Of course it will. If the game and the WiiU launches on November, then I'm sure it will be a million seller before the year ends.
