FTL: a game about managing a spaceship in an infinite galaxy

As much as I love Steam, you should buy directly from the FTL website, you get access to the DRM free versions as well as a Steam key... and you're more directly supporting the developers.

We'll see. If they're giving out Steam keys, I'm sure Steam is getting a cut of even direct sales. A DRM free copy would be nice for my laptop though.

There's also the matter of the money I have in my steam wallet.

Game is launching today, going on sale on GOG and their website at 7am EST and on Steam at 1pm EST, you get a steam key + DRM free copy if you buy from their website so seems like the best place to get it

Nope, Valve never does that.

On another note:

FINALLY BEAT THE GAME ON NORMAL YEEEES

Engi ship with 2 Ion Blasters is a great way to suffocate the enemy crew :D

What is the Steam price?

For some reason Steam won't tell me how much I am going to be paying for a game they want me to buy.

You can buy it on their Website for 9 bucks and it's redeemable on Steam. I think I'm gonna do this. It's probably cheaper than the Euro price will be.

Yeah I've just done this as well - booting it up now. I just know I'm going to be so bad at this.

I guess you can't choose who to target when you get boarded? Wish I hadn't spent so much time wearing down a rockman while two other dudes were firing at me who I could've killed quicker.

Is there a list of hotkeys somewhere?

Steam price is $10/10 euro, their website sells it for $9 for everyone, so if you want the game buy it there

After reading the preview in the OP and spending last week playing the BSG boardgame, I just had to buy this. Got it through the site, so now its just the fun wait till I finish work and can try it out.

I'm not sure about hot keys but a good strategy for dealing with boarding parties is to pull 3 crew members into the med bay and the vent the air from every other room on the ship. The boarders will make for the med bay where your healing should out weigh their damage.

I've never had to worry about individual targeting because of that tactic

This is a great strategy until while you have pulled crew from their stations a missile blows through your shields and takes out your o2

The worst thing to happen everytime. I just send 2 engis there immediately because they repair it so fast. The least I can do.

Or your door control room is vented and destroyed isolating you in the med bay while every other room is exposed to the vacuum of space.

Missed out on the kickstarter / beta for this, so am very much looking forward to giving it a go when I get home from work.

Any beginner's pointers would help out massively!

Just bought this from the devs website, it probably isn't my cup of tea but for £5.50 I am not going to throw a hissy fit over it if I don't like it. When you buy the game you get an email with a link to the non-drm version and an option to redeem your steam key (which is the version I am downloading).

Even though it isn't available for purchase yet on steam you can still download it if you redeem your steam key. So about to give it a go now, thanks for the heads up about this game.

So Idle Thumbs has me very interested in this. One question, how similar is this to the Binding of Isaac? What I mean by that is do you learn the systems by playing? Are there lots of secrets and unlockables? Is every game truly different? Does it have the same let me try one more time hook? How long does it take to play a game? Is there a reason to continually play after beating it?

I haven't played it that much yet, but there's a bunch of ships to unlock and the few times I started were very different.

Some tips for new players:

1. Space bar is pause. Remember this is at heart a rogue-like, use pause liberally to plan your shots in combat and evaluate your situation as events unfold. Also useful for setting up shots with tricky timing, like firing lasers to drop shields and then sneaking in a beam shot right as they fall.

2. Crew are a precious resource. With the typical starting 3 man crew, I recommend a dedicated pilot (pretty much required anyways), a dedicated weapons operator, and a dedicated engine operator.

You need a pilot at all times to plot the next jump and provide basic evasion abilities, it better be an absolute emergency to pull your pilot during a firefight. If you do pull him, try to make sure someone stays in the cockpit for base evasion.

The weapons expert lets you fire faster, this is important as quicker kills mean less damage to you. An engine expert will give you valuable evasion. With the exception of beams, all weapons can be dodged, and beams can only hit typically when your shields are low, generally because you didn't dodge something else.

3. The enemy plays by the same rules (mostly). They can't evade/jump without a working bridge/pilot (unless it's an AI/ upgraded system), useful in later sectors as it generally takes less damage to disable the bridge than the engines.

Some enemy differences- they can't vent their own ship, so fires are extremely effective if they get out of control (<3 fire beam). The game will notify you when they're preparing to jump, though this is easy to miss in the heat of the moment. Finally they can use a multi-shot weapon to target multiple rooms at once, the player can only hit multiple rooms with
beam weaponry.

4. Shields are important but so is evasion, and evasion is much cheaper to improve.

5. You only need to power medbay when it's being used. Useful for juggling power to a new upgrade when you're light on scrap. You can also get creative with your weapons system, missiles/bombs are less useful then beams/lasers after shields have been brought down, just be mindful of arming times.

6. When you get the Engi ship learn to stagger your 2 Ion Blasts. This will allow you to take down most any ships shields. Autofire is the way to go here. Edit: Whoops, forgot they changed this to a singe mk 2 during the beta.

7. Mad hermits are dicks.

8. 20 scrap for level 2 doors. So good it's stupid. Prevents boarders from running freely over your ship. Any boarders that come on board near a vent are doomed. Watch them slowly die as they pound on the doors. If they reach a system, just reseal the doors and send in some crew to mop up the weakened remains.

9. Pick your battles. Sometimes it's best to take the bribe or just walk away.

10. Capturing ships is incredibly profitable but also risky. If you're going to use a boarding party make sure it's not your core crew members. Use room size to your advantage. Approach enemies with medical systems cautiously, and recall boarders if they try to warp away. Power down your automatic rail gun super weapon when sending boarders from the Federation Cruiser.

There are lots of viable strategies have fun experimenting and exploring!

Anyone else unable to view their steam key off the official websites download page? When I click the green letters that say click here for your steam key nothing happens.

Played a bit before work. I'm in heaven, this game is just... god it's good.

I only played through the well written, informative and short tutorial. I already got that feeling you get when you just know you are going to enjoy the game a lot.

The tutorial does an excellent job of quickly getting you up to speed on the core game systems. Beyond that there's a healthy level of depth and nuance to the games combat and overall strategy. 8+ unlockable ships and an unlockable variant (different layout/starting loadout) for each ship as well. Game definitely has a strong, one more time hook. A full 8 sector clear takes about 2 hours, but this number is certainly dependent on how play, suspend saving is available, so you can play in any sized chunk you please. After beating it you can continue to play for unlockables /achievements /score/ trying different strategies. I don't know if it was implemented before the end of beta but you're supposed to be able to eventually continue your run after destroying the final boss, with increasingly challenging enemies (that scale beyond the power of the player ship, more than 4 shields, etc).

Without a question the game is already my indie game of the year and will likely be very high overall as well. I've been absolutely enthralled by it since the onLive demo.

Just purchased from the official website and got it downloading on Steam now. Yippee.

Thanks for the pointers Mazre, and I'm glad to hear there is a decent tutorial as well.

Something very important.

The rebel fleet RESETS every time you enter a new zone. NO point in rushing a sector, so try to squeeze out every sector as much as possible.

Lol I got turned down offering help with capturing an enemy ship intact.. not properly equipped for their mission. Meh I would have blown that ship to smithereens anyways! Hope they suffocate to death.

Jump to FTL

So I came near a system with a beautiful view but with nothing to do. Checked my stats and noticed my oxygen was counting down... WTF who turned off the airsupply?! Damn you Kaylee you useless bint! I turned it on again. Disaster averted.

Jump to FTL

I noticed a distress beacon, we head for it. It's a pirate ship in trouble near an astroid belt. I can make a choice here... Meh it's a pirate. Shoot it down and loot him!

Several Jumps to FTL

There is a de-activated rebel drone floating around. I download some info from it and it maps some ships in the near space. Oh crap better not test my luck and just head for the exit and into next sector.

Man I'm loving the game already.

-Edit-

Oh crap came too close to the sun and got attacked by a pirate. The solarflares and the constant attacks and fires made my ship explode. RIP serenity crew.

Another useful hint:

Accepting a surrender yields MORE missiles/fuel/drone parts than blowing the ship up. Only blow them up if you want more scrap, though sometimes even screp is reduced, so choose wisely.
