I'm not too worried for them. Their engine business must be very profitable. I don't know how much the Cliffmeister actually contributed creatively to their development side, so it's hard to say what kind of impact him leaving will have on future games.

I can see him getting his own studio from ZeniMax, ala Shinji Mikami. Not only did Mikami inspire Cliff's concept of Gears, Cliff has been very vocal about his love for the new VR tech coming. Now that Mikami is working at ZeniMax, and Carmack interested in VR, I feel ZeniMax has what Cliff is interested in.

In short, ZeniMax has three things that gets him excited: Mikami, VR, and Skyrim.

This is huge news, completely unexpected, and a huge kick in the balls (for me personally).

I absolutely love Unreal/UT and Gears of War has been such an important franchise for me.
I was kind of bored of gaming until I saw the tech demo for UE3/Gears of War. I actually bought a 360 just for that game and one of my fondest memories of this gen was picking up the first Gears with my housemates on launch day and playing the shit out of it in co-op.

All this time I had simply assumed that he had been working on the next big ip for Epic and thought it'd be a sweet launch game for the next Xbox :(

Cliff always seemed like a really nice guy in interviews etc. Hope he enjoys whatever he plans to do now... Hope he comes back one day :(

Next for CliffyB

  • Get a gig at MS, either with an existing studio or a new one. Develop new games for Durango.
  • Get a gig with MS, replace Allard and become the head or one of the main guys at the Xbox division
  • Join EA/Activision/Ubi and have his own team to develop big games for 720/PS4/PC
  • Join Sony, either SSM, ND, SP, or one of those studios and create new games for PS4
  • Start his own company and work as a 2nd party for Sony/MS
  • Work for NOA, develop a game called Games of War starring a character named Mario Denix

I'll say that if he wanted to stay in AAA, he would have just sat at Epic where he could go greenlight any AAA project he wanted.

I remember being blown away by the module/tracker music in the first Unreal game (and Jazz before that, if I'm not mistaken).

It was such a difference from MIDI.

So, I take a two hour nap and when I wake up I see one of the most influential developers this console generation has decided to depart the only company he has ever called home. This is major news. I wonder where he is going to go now. Form an indie start up and work on small-scale/mobile games or head to another major company and head up a team there. I guess he felt his work on the next Gears of War game was in good hands and he could leave. But, with Rod Fergusson ‏also leaving EPIC Games you have to admit this is a major change to the company and industry.

Ya take a nap and wake up to this. Sounds a little burned out! Well he should be after going non stop for 20. If he gets the itch to come back he will, if he does choose to come back he can get any job he wants.

If he stays in gaming he will do something that involves PC. From the way he's been sounding in interviews the last few months it sounds like he misses the freedom of PC. He's not gonna tie himself to one console.

He's either sitting out a no compete and will resurface at another studio or start his own after a year or two. Or he's really out of the industry.

Isn't he good friends with devs from ND? Maybe he wanna make a project with them.
