Nah, the game industry took a loss today. In interviews, Cliffy STILL has the enthusiasm of a new guy! He's still got more ideas in the can than people ever cook up their entire career. I remember this one interview where he was talking about a concept for survival horror where the entire mechanic is that the monster is active the second you look away. I don't know, Black. Unreal was in essence the typical Doom/Quake clone but powered by fantastic technology. Tournament was the take on Arena shooters like Quake 3. Gears of War was a 3rd person shooter heavily influenced by RE4.

The point im trying to make here, is that the products he was involved as a creator while solid ones are heavily inspired by others. He wouldn't probably been able to come with that stuff by himself. So all the ideas he might have never materialized, he is very good at iterating and improving what already exists.

I am really curious of what he is after now, i don't really see the point of him departing been still so young.

Cliffy never seemed that much like a money man. I could be wrong but of many devs he really never seemed to lose sight much.
However knowing that the big 3 are gearing up I just figure there is a chance with MS, far more than the others obviously. He hasn't been happy with the consoles lately but getting ready for the 720. I could see that jump, he has always seemed like he fit there for some odd reason. Doesn't explain leaving EPIC just to go to MS unless money or a position of some kind of driving importance was offered.

Valid observation Xero, i knew they were really close in terms of offcial release but i was thinking in terms of Quake 3 leak. Also i wonder when each was first unveiled.

Anyway, we might disregard this specefic example but the other two in my previous psot remain reasonable.
