Google's voice to text implementation is local, apple's requires the web. That's where a big chunk of the speed is at.

Doesn't seem to work in airplane mode but that's possible.

EDIT: I won't ever move to Android, nothing is consistent.. from the software updates, to the icons.. most phone's don't even have 4.0 and even fewer have 4.1.. I can't imagine how long it's going to take to get to 4.2.

not to mention each phone's ability to use apps.

It's definitely more impressive that Siri, but like Siri, I have little need for this. All I use Siri for is speaking text messages sometimes.

I don't think I'll ever join the speaking revolution :|

Nope. Google search on non 4.1 devices is just a simple search app. Basically pulls up google.com for whatever you search. We have "voice actions" but that has basically no interface and has a limited set of actions.

What iOS basically has now is google now, without the automation. The cards looks like google now, even the voice commands are similar to what you can do in Google Now (What is the weather like today?). The automation of Google Now is it telling you weather and traffic before you go to work, without interaction from you.

So yeah, iOS has this, and the VAST majority of Android phones doesnt. Something is wrong with that picture Google.

I just had to compile 2 weeks worth of numbers for this invoice I was about to send out. Before I did I opened it up and just spewed all the numbers out to it:
"5+3+7+2+1+8" etc etc I saw it patiently listening and recording everything I said then immediately gives me the total.

This thing kicks ass. Thank you google.

Holy crap it is FAST.
Too bad it cant do phone applications though like "send a message" type of stuff.

Sucks that iPhone doesn't have this in the Google Search app, but this type of stuff works on Android.

Check if voice search is set to US English in the settings, it won't speak back if it's set to UK English, etc.

ITT, people think this is Google Now. It's not. This is Google Voice Search, while Now is the Android feature that automatically presents information cards it thinks you will want, when it thinks you will want them, without you having to manually request that information. On Android, Google Now and Voice Search are very tightly integrated, but they are not the same thing.

I was excited to play with this app, disappointed thoroughly by it. I tried about a dozen queries and every single one behaved exactly the same way: dictate my voice, do a google search for that phrase.

... I don't need an app for that.

The iOS app is just a voice search tool. It isn't Google Now. If you think it's Now, you don't know what Now is.

Maybe it looks like the Now cards but the functionality is still the same. You can do the same things on iOS as 4.0.

The original iPhone was priced around $700 without a contract. Last year's iPhone model on cricket without a contract is at $500. I bet a 5 would be $700. I don't think contract has anything to do with the price.

No it wasn't. The price has been increasing over the years. Contract obviously has something to do with the price but it's not the only factor, or even the most important one. Apple is pretty stringent on the iPhone no-contract price; it's the one device they never ever offer discounts for.

That's what it does if you're not using US English. Same on Android. Voice search is pretty pointless if I have my phone set to Swedish. On top of that, the Swedish speech recognition is terrible compared to how it is in English. If I say something a little too quickly in Swedish (my native tongue) it will consistently get most of it wrong, while if I instead set it to US English it always gets it right. But obviously they have many times more English voice data, so it is what it is.

(If you do have things set to US English, I don't know why you're not getting any interesting results.)
