Super Mario Bros. 2 needs to serve as the inspiration for the next Mario Platformer.

With Super Mario Land 3D being a homage to Super Mario Brothers 3, and New Super Mario Brothers Wii U being a homage to Super Mario World, I think it's about time that Nintendo pays homage to the dark-horse of the central Mario series...Super Mario Brothers 2 USA.

Although the game is essentially a palette-swap version of Doki Doki Panic, as I am sure everyone here is aware of, and its altered game-play seems odd when placed beside the rest of the Mario "canon", it was actually my favorite Mario game as a child. I loved the music, multiple characters with actual differences beyond simple aesthetics, and the gameplay as well...sitting on enemies as they walk around, and even hitching a ride on the Pidgits and Ostros, was a game-play mechanic that I found to be endlessly amusing. One of my earliest memories is coming home from school and finding out my dad had just purchased it for the NES, needing my help as he was puzzled what to do with the orb that appears after defeating Birdo. When I found out years later that the game I loved was not actually a Mario game...well, I didn't care, and I don't think there's anyone out there who doesn't consider this a Mario game even knowing its backstory.

Anyway, the main point is that I would love to see Nintendo pay homage to Super Mario Brothers 2 for the next Mario Platformer they produce, be it New Super Mario Brothers 3, or the next 3D Land. Personally I'd prefer the latter...and hey, they have the perfect name for it since it'll be "Super Mario 3D Land 2" and everything. When I say "homage", I don't mean a remake...for one, while I enjoyed the "pick-up-enemies" game-play in the original, I don't necessarily wanna see that in a modern Mario Platformer. They could incorporate it a bit, like there being pick-up vegetables and potions, but apart from that I'd still like it to be "jump on enemies to kill them" gameplay. And rather than the weird health-system Mario Bros. 2 had, I would rather them just use the classic "Mario->Super Mario->Power-Up" health system.

Now, the one game-play element of Mario Brothers 2 that I think would be vital to incorporate is the multiple characters...Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad being the four playable characters, of course. This would fit neatly in New Super Mario Brothers co-op style, but I think a single-player 3D Land game would also be neat with multiple characters. Rather than making them unlockable, or forcing you to beat the game with all four characters to unlock extra stuff (beating levels 4 times seems a bit much), I'd love for it to be simply completely optional like in Mario Bros. 2. Let the player switch between the characters on the World Map at their leisure, with everyone sharing the same lives, but the characters could have their own health...i.e., Mario might be Super Mario at the moment, but Luigi could be regular Luigi. The characters would have differences, and this would affect the game difficulty meaning players could kind of choose their level of play...Mario is the average-man for standard players, Peach is easier to use as she could float to save herself, Toad would be for speed-runners, being extremely fast without much flair, and Luigi would be quirky and difficult yet good if mastered, with his trademark slippery style and high jumps.

Most importantly, however, the game would have to bring back all the classic Mario 2 baddies...Birdo, Clawgrip, Mouser, Tryclyde, and, of course, Wart. Oh, and there'd need to be levels where you're pursued by Phanto, naturally. The Bird Statue would also return, taking the place of Flagpoles, and at the end of each level you'd have to fight an enemy who would be guarding the orb to open it. And the Subspace Potions could return too...like, for example, when tossed on the ground, a door would appear leading to a special version of the map with secret items and such, maybe even alternate exits. Like, you'd see a hint in the normal version that there's a hidden exit, and thus would need to use your Subspace Potion in that location or something.

Co-signed.

Let's see some Doki-Doki Panic action. And yes, I would want to see pick-up-and-throw-enemies gameplay in SM3DL-style 3D.

Agreed. They've been taking from the Mario 3 well far too much lately, and have been totally ignoring the existence of Mario 2.

I don't want another homage. The past few Mario's felt like homages.

They should surprise everyone with something completely fresh

I'd much prefer something in the vein of SMB2 JP.

Though I do think a new game in the style of SMB2 USA could be worthwhile. I like a lot of things about that game, particularly the mechanics. The pacing is just terrible.

I think Mario 2 was the only Mario I really loved. Maybe because it was the first one I played.

3D Land should have been a homage to Gunpei Yokoi's weird-arse Game Boy Mario games, and I don't even like those games. Gimme moai heads, jiangshi, spacesuits, all that bullshit. Even just a Hip Tanaka arrangement would have been nice.

Now this idea or Super Mario 64-2 I could get behind. I'd even love to see a Super Mario Universe with a lot of that stuff included.

3D Land is absolutely fantastic. I'm on like Special World 7 I think, and I've loved every minute of it.

My only gripes are that the regular levels are too easy, the level and world's setting and theme seems to be very sporadic at times (no real connection between levels in worlds), and I feel like some jumps and challenges are more difficult and frustrating then intended, because I don't use 3D at all.

With that said, it's an absolutely fantastic game. I can't wait to finally play SMG 1 and 2, and I know my mind is going to be blown to see what the next one looks and plays like on the Wii U.

You are so lucky to experience these fresh...I wish I could be playing them for my first time.

Games are insanely amazing!

Actually, now that I think about it, lots of the SMB2 enemies seem to show up in the Yoshi games a lot but not the Mario series proper, so maybe SMB2 wasn't just a dream but a weird subconscious rationalisation of all the trauma Mario witnessed as a baby.

I'd really like them to go in that direction just to see how it'd turn out. I'm sure they could make it work well, they're talented enough however I'm quite sure I won't be playing the next console Mario game regardless.

That's what I keep hearing!

Nintendo gave me my favorite Zelda game ever last gen in Windwaker, so I'm curious to see if they're going to give my my new favorite 3D Mario with one of these games. (I don't think anything in the Mario series can top SMB 3.)

Since we are talking about games that will never happen I'd rather they base one entirely on it while ignoring all the standard SMB stuff (mushrooms, pipes and goombas).

Make it cell-shaded too.

I totaly agree with the fact that there should be a sequel of super mario bros 2.
But it would be better delivered as a spinoff AAA title instead of the next 3d mario.

Besides that , one remark about the super mario bros 2d series :
They should put shops with varied goodies into the overworld. This way they could let you do something with the coins that you have collected. Besides that i would like to see a overworld (top-view) where you can walk arround searching for secrets. exclamation mark which we know from super mario world, could also be used as blocks in the overworld to reach parts where you never have been before. etc...

I do think it would be utilized very well with Mario's 3D schematic. The design of the game and it's lay out lends itself very well to three dimensional play.

Same. Didn't love it as much as 3, but definitely prefer it to World.

Anyone who disses this game for not being a true Mario (or Zelda II for being a true Zelda) but praises Donkey Kong Country over Donkey Kong '94 is full of crap.

Ha ha okay.

Nope.

How about a explonation?

Super Mario Bros. 2 JP was everything we would hate today: Only a Level-Pack with minimal changes. Super Mario Bros. 2 USA/ Doki Doki Panic was a complete different title and brought new elements to the Mario Series, even by not being a original Mario-Title. There was not a clear art design for the characters before SMB2. The whole look of Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad is the first time clearly lay outed and defined for pop-culture (look at the Mario Cartoon). So why not create an homage to this very important game with a true sequel.

It would be great to have a much bigger cast. You could add Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, Bowser, Donkey Kong etc. everybody with there own powers and disadvantages. Since there is a an attack mechanic in place, you can create much better bosses like in Yoshi's Island. Also some of the ideas of the OP.

People want fresh air with the NEW Super Mario Bros. Series, so why not do the same as Nintendo did with Super Mario Bros. 2 USA.

I didn't post this in the Yoshi for Independence thread since that thread was about games that Yoshi would star in and be the only playable character, I had the idea today that Yoshi would be an excellent addition to the Super Mario Bros. 2 cast of playable characters due to his unique abilities. Plus it would allow them to expand on the apparent relationship between him and Birdo.

I had no idea there was so much distaste for SMB2.
Yeah. I don't think SMB 2 US got anywhere this much hate before the Internet.

Expansion packs are awesome. I think you underestimate the appeal of new levels to play in a game you already like.

SMB2J was practically rom-hack bullshit, which is funny considering SMB2USA is practically a romhack in itself. (referring to the quality of level design btw).

Dude Donkey Kong Country is the pinnacle of the Donkey Kong franchise...

Only if they absolutely are determined to do yet another "NEW" SMB game, then yeah they might as well tap into the one well that was a bit more neglected before. At least it would be a different set of enemies to run into instead of the standards all over again, and gameplay that emphasizes grabbing and throwing stuff all over the place would be a nice change and surely add a lot of multiplayer fun.

While I agree with your post, the bolded simply isn't true.

People hate on the NSMB series because each new game is simply more of the same shit. We wouldn't be angry if it was more of the same... awesomeness. Case and point, Mario Galaxy 2. SMB2j would also fall into the awesomeness category ;)

You put Galaxy 2 in the same section as the Mario King of Romhack bullshit.

How could you do that D:

After playing NSMBWii recently, I was just thinking how great it would be to have a true SMB2 followup in the same way (Picking up items/enemies, playable Peach, and a return of characters like Wart, Shyguys, and Birdo (as actual enemies)

And wow at the hate. SMB2 USA >>>>>>SMB2 Japan ANY day.

While I can certainly agree, I for one felt like SMB2j was a wee bit TOO hard to really have fun with it. Games like Galaxy 2 and even SMB2 USA had difficulty that was *perfect* and just right and were incredibly fun. It really does feel like a lot of the romhacks out there that basically "Oh not hard enough? Beat this game, BITCH!" type of mentality toward them that SMB2j started.

The only thing New Super Mario needs is just one Toad. How about a new character as the fourth player instead of another boring Toad with a different color? That's one thing I absolutely hate about the NSMB games.

A new character would be awesome. It doesn't even have to be human. It's also a great way to introduce a new character to the franchise. Playing as Miis is kind of cool, but that's so generic.

I wouldn't mind revisiting some of the mindset of SMB2. At this point I really just want off the SMB3 worship.

It's been so long since I've played SMB2, though. Man, probably since I originally beat it, and I beat that shit when it came out, got it for a birthday present.

In what world do people live in thinking that Mario Bros 2 was anything but a large success for anyone involved?
The game was actually popular enough that it was the very 1rst game Nintendo remade to push their new handheld (while the uninteresting Lost Level got relegated to a bonus mode in the obscure technical marvel on GBC).
I swear some people just love rewriting history, next we'll hear how the GC was so super successful and people hated Space Invaders back then.
